My only beef with Tiger is that in my opinion classic is an afterthought and runs terrible in Tiger. Try running classic games in Tiger? Crash after crash after crash. Some will run, but I have always had a crash at some point with Tiger. This is why I now boot separate into genuine OS 9.2.2. IMO when it comes to classic nothing beats the real deal.

Wait you can run OS 9 on on an iBook G4? (semi n00bie here). can you dual boot?

What are you all using for web browser these days? any thing new enough? i assume net flix is impossible? any run linux? anyone try any IDE SSDs yet? do these things really get 3 hours of ACTUAL use off of battery power?

1. No. OS 9 can only be run in the Classic environment on an iBook G4. You cannot natively boot into OS 9.

2. Most of use TenFourFox (10.4/10.5) or Leopard WebKit (10.5) for web browsing.

3. Netflix will not work to my knowledge due to the lack of Silverlight. However, I understand that Netflix is implementing HTML5 which should work in TenFourFox, though to what capacity I am not sure.

4. Most PowerPC compatible Linux versions are community supported distros. A common one that is still in development is Ubuntu MATE.

5. Yes. If you want the best performance then you should get an mSATA SSD and accompanying adapter. I have a KingSpec 32 GB SSD and it is much faster than a regular hard drive but a bit slower than a mSATA SSD. If you want it to be more affordable then I recommend the KingSpec model highly. I would be happy to post benchmarks if needed.

6. Battery life depends on what you are doing and what resources are being used as well as the quality of the battery installed. I am not sure what battery manufactures make batteries for the iBook, but you can see a variety on Amazon and eBay. Be sure to look at user reviews before ordering.

I see king spec units up to 128gb exist. nice if you have a music and or movie collection.

Does any one know if Kega Fusion will run on leopard and or tiger?

EDIT: i'd like to grab a G4 i just don't want ot have to spend more than $45 USD shipped. i'd like to get the 1.4ghz with with the 32mb ATI 9550. i already have a copy of the old Blizzard games. I wonder how slow that ubuntu mate would be and how slow wine would be. i wonder if wine works at all on ppc?

I do not believe that Kega Fusion would work on any PowerPC though ironically they support Windows machines as old as Windows 98! Perhaps you can email the developer and ask if there is an older copy that supports PPC. Do you not own the iBook yet?

I think i edited my post while you were posting back.

also it's not too ironic, windows unlike mac (sadly) still maintains decent BC, most of the apps the that don't work to well are usually have odd ball hacks employed in the programing ,then again that's massive generalization too. BC on 7 sometimes requires tweaking. ANYWAYS windows always was x86 so that might be why. i might check a repository of older version and or try to contact the developer.

If you are looking for an iBook let me know. Also, my buddy Gavin Stubbs has made a fantastic PowerPC Archive you should check out. There are not many games on it but it has a lot of software.

Paulwgraber runs OS 9.2.2 natively on a PowerMac G4, they can be had from 10-100,-USD (if I am still up to date) depending on model.

The last (latest / fastest) Apple machines that can boot into OS 9 natively are listed here http://www.everymac.com/mac-answers...rt-faq/last-macs-to-boot-startup-macos-9.html
(for the Mirror Drive Door MDD, you can use the 1,42GHz CPU from a MDD-FW800 model, to get even faster).

Don't expect to much of an SSD, it won't make your video encoding/playing faster/better etc. Nor will it help you with the internet (a lot of flash content isn't supported anymore btw.). You most probably will only notice, that your Applications and the OS starts faster, you have to decide, if that is the expense worth for you.

Also, be warned that getting a PowerPC Mac, for doing a lot of things today involves a lot of time and tweaking. But, if you have the time and like to play with it, go ahead (otherwise, for Mac-Newbies I won't sugguest doing anything with a PowerPC, if you expect something).

i'm looking at iBook G4s. I'm looking at getting the 1.3 preferably the 1.4ghz. I see some on eBay that haven't sold yet for 45 and 55 USD shipped. However we are talking about a 10+ year old machine that isn't quite as fit for every day use as my regular laptops. There is decent amount of good old games for PPC Mac. Blizzard and Interplay games.

Also in that list G4 iBook is not on there, what is classic mode, that some of you were mentioning earlier? Someone said os 9.2.2 has to be booted/ran in "classic environment".

EDIT: i'm looking at an iBook G4 A1134 for $55 USD shipped but, thats wee bit steep for a computing oddity.

EDIT: i wonder what the iBook G4's chipset's HDD size limitation is. A 500gb or 1TB msata would be really nice to fit my 200GB music collection on.

EDIT: which version of TenFourFox would i use fora 7447 G4?

The default UI is the single biggest problem I have with Leopard. Whoever thought that light blue folders, pink desktop, and two shades of gray (windows and menu bar) was a good idea should be shot

Ahh, so you're the reason Scott Forstall has been keeping such a low profile recently. :p

Actually, I would be intersted to know if you prefer Yosemite's look to Leopard?

PM me about an iBook.

Yosemite's iOS-style setup doesn't do much for me. Tiger still has the best UI for daily use. I've made my peace with the pink, gray, and light blue layout since my daily driver runs Snow Leopard.

Hm, I posted an answer to this post, but I see it hasn't been saved or probably been deleted for whatever reason. So, I try to recap. Such a pity...

1* I have an ibook G4 1,33GHz and OS 9 games don't run fluently in classic mode under 10.4. For example in Master of Orion, a strategy game without any action, the mouse cursor jumps, when you move it, it also feels like the pointer is glued to the screen and that game isn't demanding. Eight Legged Freaks, an ego shooter, is playable, but somehow plays a bit like a stop motion micture movie. Also you are not able to aim the weapons precisely, because of the lack of speed. Even under 10.4 itself Nexuiz, a halo clone, is not fluently playable, you can play it, but when you move around, it "jumps" a tiny bit, too.

So, for OS 9 gaming, better get a machine that is capable of booting into OS 9 natively. Of course, you can always first try how you get along in classic mode with gaming and later sell the ibook again, if it doesn't do, what you expect.

The ibook G3 900MHz ist the fastest OS 9 laptop, that runs 9 natively. A PowerBook G4 Titanium 1GHz might be worth a look, too, but they are more expensive, I think.
The PowerMac G4s are all OS 9 bootable, despite the very last 2003 MDD model ("mirror drive doors", because of the front of the Mac).

2* Under 10.4, you can start OS 9 in a sandbox / virtualisation, this virtualisation is called classic mode (not present in 10.5!). If you are familiar with virtualisation, you can imagine, that this is the reason, it runs worse, than booting natively into OS 9. Mac OS X has to translate the code.

3* There is no limitation. OS 10.4 can only use up to 2TB per drive, btu since there is no 3TB mSATA drive... so no problem. The earlier ibooks have a limitation, though.

4* like the floodgap page says. :) But I'll answer you: it is the second one on the page.
