kernel panic after 10.3.7 update! yikes!

Hi people,

Looks like I'm in the unlucky minority, but 10.3.7 caused a severe case of indigestion in my powerbook (15" 1.25 ghz). About a week after I installed it, I was greeted with a kernel panic. Upon restart, another kernel panic.

After backing up all my stuff using firewire target disk mode, and trying lots of miscellaneous things to fix it, I finally did the archive and install option to reinstall Panther. The computer was back to normal, almost: now, my airport card isn't showing up. The little airport menu says "no airport card installed".

I then went through software update and installed about 10 different updates, including 10.3.7 again. And lo and behold, we're back to kernel panics!

So again, I did another archive and install, and have been slowly going through the 10 updates one by one. So far, the first five are OK- no more kernel panics. I'm going to try installing all of them except 10.3.7 this time, and use the combined 10.3.6 installer instead and see what happens.

So, it isn't definite yet (and won't be unless I try 10.3.7 again just to confirm it), but it looks increasingly likely that 10.3.7 was the cause. I don't know how it blanked out my airport card either. Has anyone else seen any reports of this anywhere? I haven't seen too many complaints on this forum.

It sounds to me like some software you have installed is conflicting with 10.3.7. What I'd recommend doing is updating everything WITHOUT re-installing custom programs and see if it causes kernel panics. If it does, you've got a hardware issue. If it doesn't, install and test each program - if it works fine for however long you want the test period to be, then install and test the next program. Once it starts acting funny again, you know which piece of software you had was causing the problem. First, look for an updated version of the offending program. If you don't find one, then you'll either have to revert to 10.3.6 or do without the troublesome program.

Did you try re-seating your Airport card? Take it out and put it back in.. when you do, make sure everything clicks all the way. The only time I had all sorts of kp's was when my Airport Extreme card was loose. It happens, so check if that's the case with your machine.

thanks for the suggestions

Boy, that was quick! Thanks for the suggestions, people. I already tried reseating the airport card- alas, no luck. 10.3.7 was fine for a week or so (I installed it the day it came out, and the problem just happened yesterday. I'm trying to imagine what I could have on here that could be the cause of the conflict, but I haven't installed anything new since the update, except for Final Cut Express.

I'm going to start with the 10.3.6 update first and see if things remain OK.

Worst case scenario is the logic board went south. Otherwise maybe it's RAM (bad RAM, not perfectly seated RAM, etc). If you still have warranty left on it, get it looked at right away.

It states that if made changeds using 3rd party products to the OS, what does that mean.... does that mean transparent dock? I don't really want to uninstall that, i like have my dock differnt colors (why doesn't apple incorporate it into tiger...
Also anyone running it on a 15" pb 1.5 GHZ......
.6 really messed up my computer good.... Everytime i wake my computer from its nap, and have my external speakers in i get noise and i have to put it to sleep again, then wake it up..... So i'm a bit skeptical of .7
any thoughts...
thanks

Considering how many times people have whined "I have no Dock" and they had Transparent Dock installed, I think it would include that in 3rd party software that you should de-install.

I always wonder how many people have been hurt by 3rd party products and blame it on Apple? Too many, I think. ;)

Hows the best way to do this.
1. how should i reset the dock, if i unstall w/o reseting will it it update the dock to normal or should i reset from with in the program
2. should i just drag the folder to the trash or do a search get rid of everything that comes up?
I did a search and this is what came up....

transparent dock (icon)
com.freerangemac.transparentdock.plist
TransparentDock 2.2 (folder)
TransparentDock (folder)

old version of candy bar messed up 10.3.7?

Hi again,

I just thought of something that might have contributed to my problem with the 10.3.7 update- I had an old version candy bar (that application that changes system icons) and this was not rated as compatible with 10.3.7

I wonder if this might have been the cause of the 10.3.7-induced kernel panic? (ironically, candy bar comes from a company called "panic software"......hmmmmm). Having gone through reinstalling my system (and about 10 upgrades) twice in the last two days, I'm not sure if I want to test this theory.

I really don't know since I don't install those sort of things. Does their website give any clues? I'm sure they've had enough questions about compatibility by now and how to remove it temporarily.

mkap:

I feel bad for you. Of course, your hack could have caused a kernel panic, though it's not certain that it did. It's always best to de-install, update the operating system and if the hack is compatible, re-install it. Always check first, it might save you a lot of grief.

how i got 10.3.7 to run great

every since 10.3.2 my 1GHz powerbook was a bit sluggish, the fan was almost always on and it never automatically went into sleep mode. now i have a 20" iMac G5 so i decided i can afford to play with the powerbook. i reformatted the powerbook drive, zapped PRAM installed 10.3 and then directly after updated to 10.3.7. It is like having a totally new powerbook. The powerbook now flys right along. Most programs open almost instantaneously, now the fan almost never comes on and finally the powerbook automatically goes into deep sleep mode. 10.3.7 is a great update...after a clean install...all updates between 10.3.1 and 10.3.6 have given me nothing but trouble however with 10.3.7 Apple seems to be on track again.

I very happy to hear of your success. Sounds as though you have a brand new PowerBook besides the 20" iMac G5.

I just noticed something. Since upgrading to 10.3.7, whenever I try to download icons from this site, http://www.pixelgirlpresents.com/icons.php, I can't view the icons. They download just fine, but the icons are not viewable. Does anyone know how to correct this? Are the icons I'm downloading just not compatible?
Are you clicking the right download icon? The Windows icons won't be viewable when you download them (click the Windows logo), but if you download the Mac version (click the Finder icon) it should work.

I'm clicking the Finder icon each & every time. I may be a newb but I'm pretty sure I'm not making that mistake :)

Interesting. It works just fine for me. I download the icon set, it decompresses the zip file, and out comes a folder with generic documents bearing custom icons. If you're seeing generic icons instead, try forcing the Finder to quit (which will cause it to relaunch itself - if it doesn't, just click the Finder icon in the Dock). If that doesn't work, rebuild the Classic desktop file. To do that, open System Preferences, click Classic, click Advanced, click the Rebuild Desktop button, select all disks, and click rebuild. If you get an error saying something about Classic not being installed or that no System folder has been selected, just ignore it and click OK.

I attached a view of what I get. Don't know if anyone can help me out w/ this one, but I'd appreciate any & all suggestions :)

You're getting the "generic icons" I mentioned in my previous post. Try the two suggestions I gave you and see if that helps.

No, that didn't work for me :(
I forgot to mention that a Finder force-quit only works when the window in question is open, and for the second fix to do anything, a log out and back in is required.

Followed your direction, with the amendments, & I still get the generic icons. I hate not being able to figure this one out. Oh well...I'll try repairing permissions, that's sometimes the cure-all :)

Anybody tried this update on an iBook that has had the screen spanning patch applied???

Dont want to kill my spangly new Mac quite yet ;)

Worked great on my 1.33 iBook 14" with screen spanning patch

Hi
I downloaded the upgrade, but was told my hard disk didn´t meet the requirements for instalation of the upgrade.
Anyone know what that supposed to mean. I have an 12" 1.2ghz ibook that´s only a couple of months old. It´s the first update I tried to install.
I remember reading something about repearing permissions on this forum, is that what I should do?
Please advice

My guess is that you downloaded the wrong updater for your Mac. If your Software Update is working properly, use that - it will make sure you get the correct update. You can call it up by choosing it from the Apple menu or opening System Preferences (by whichever method you prefer - there are at least 4 ways I know of) and choosing Software Update. Otherwise, I would download the Mac OS X 10.3.7 Combo update from Apple's site - it'll update you no matter what Mac OS X 10.3.X version you have. The (regular) updater only works if you have 10.3.6 installed. To find out your Mac OS X version, go to the Apple menu and choose About This Mac.
