I finally got around to installing this update, along with the iCal update. Everything appeared to complete normally, then on the reboot, when the system is starting it hangs at the loading screen showing "Login Window Starting". I don't really know what to do at this point, aside from a clean install... Which doesn't sound ideal, because I would like to get some files off my HD first...

Any advice?

I don't have a problem formatting the drive and starting fresh... BUT I really need to get those files onto my backup drive first.

things seem different

Installed the updater.

My G5 took much longer to boot than it normally does, but everything seems to be in order.

I'm afraid of jinxing things after my last Powermac just freaking died on me.

My G5 takes longer to boot, and apps are openning slower. I hear my harddrive work longer when opening then before the update.

Try doing a Safe Boot (hold down Shift while the Mac is booting until it says Safe Boot) and see if you can get in. If you can, see if you can back up your stuff from there (you might not be able to, since Safe Boot loads minimal drivers). You could also try FireWire Target Disk mode if you have another Mac handy.

ProTools 6.4 LE works fine with my 17" PB and an M-box plus a 002.

Haven't got 6.7 yet.

Logic, Reason, Reaktor and numerous plug-ins all reporting for duty.

Excellent news, thanks a lot WinterMute, I might just take the plunge on this one although I see there are a lot more negative posts in the thread now. Did you have 10.3.6 on your PB or did you use the combo updater? I was too cautious to update to .6 with all the bad press.

Hey All

Well I did this last night on my Pismo 400 and it works GREAT!!! 10.3.6 killed my FireWire drive, and 10.3.7 corrected it and now it mounts and Boots!!! Happy Happy Happy!!!

Have Great Holiday's!!!

I might just be pressing Shift at the wrong time, but when I hold down the shift key and press the power button it won't get past the grey Apple logo splash screen, and the status bar keeps circling around. It just sits like that for 10 minutes, then I do a cold boot and try to press it after the grey screen completes and it goes through the process and gets hung on "Login Window Loading" again.

I just checked out the Apple Support Forums, it looks like there are a few other reports of the same thing. Not a lot of positive news on a fix though. Maybe something people want to consider before installing this.

Sounds like I'm probably in a small group though based on the lack of any posts about it. My system was due for a clean install anyone, it would just be great not to lose those files I need.

On another note, I haven't done a Panther reinstall in a while... Does anyone know what the install options are from the CD. I think I remember there being an "Archive" option, which sounds like it has potential to be a good option here. Has anyone tried this, and what info does it archive? Most of the files are in my home directory, but 2 of the folders are in the root directory.

Just as a piece of advice to others, if you have a backup HD... always a good idea to use it often, and not kick yourself for it later.

Alright, Huge Issues

This is so frustrating.

I made a post earlier about my problems with Mail. They don't stop there.

First, I have a 15" PB G4 1.5 GHz, w/ 768MB RAM. Installed X.3.7. Verified and repaired disk permissions, updated prebinding, ran maintenance scripts, etc. The whole 9 yds.

Like I said, Mail is sloooooowww. Taking at least 35 sec. to launch and 15 sec. to shut down. This is after optimization and several shut downs.

ALSO, ICHAT TAKES ABOUT THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME TO START UP!

And every time I try to add a bookmark in Safari, it crashes.

What's the deal? Have the OS's web capabilities been crippled somehow? ARggghghgh...

I highly recommend an "Archive and Install" of Panther. It'll archive the "System" folder, Apple applications in the "Applications" folder, and the "Users" folder, which has all user data in it (but only if the "Preserve Users and Network Settings" option is NOT checked - otherwise the Users folder does NOT get archived). Even if you choose to archive the user information, you can easily copy over what you need from the archived user folder. Make sure you delete the archive once you've copied everything you need from it (if you feel uneasy about deleting something you might need later, just make a disk image of the archive folder before deleting the archive).

That is indeed good news, I'm about to get a Digi 002.

I didn't even check to see if Reason was running properly.

Press the power button but before you hear the chime, press and hold shift. This used to disable extensions... now it starts the computer in Safe Mode. Holding it before pressing the button might not work... no reason why it shouldn't, IMO, but you never know.

good news for mx900 and carvware's gamepadcompanion users

Whereas previously my mx900 would take about 30 seconds after startup was complete to be recognized, it's now recognized before startup even gets to the desktop, just like ordinary usb mice!

Also, whereas previously carvware's gamepadcompanion, which I use to drive my mx900, required I launch it's prefpane manually before it's activated, now becomes fully active automatically!

This issue has received a lot of attention on the Apple
discussion forums -- see discussions.info.apple.com,
look under Mac OS X > Mac OS X 10.3 Panther >
Installation and Setup, under the thread "10.3.7 slows
DNS lookup", for example. The problem (at least for
some of your symptoms) seems to be linked to the
way 10.3.7 handles networking. There are proposed
fixes in the thread, but no single silver bullet yet as
far as I know; some of the fixes work for some
people some of the time, and I've found a couple of
the suggestions to be usable workarounds in my case.

Good luck.

Internal Error at startup

Very weird - saw my first internal error from my mac after restarting the mac - came up with window saying: Internal Error: NCSF Configuration error
followed by some code. Never seen unreadable error messages before on my Mac...

OK, a couple days with 10.37 (on AlBook 1.25)...

* No problems. No bugs, slowdowns, or other side effects so far.

* Accessing sites is more reliable. I had thought my ISP might be going iffy on me last month, but maybe it was just 10.3.5 all along.

* No other improvements or speedups. Subjectively, I don't notice better framerates in games. Then again, I also just lost most of my RAM and am crawling along with 256 for a while! :( (The dialup madness that appeared for me with 10.3.5 went away on its own even before 10.3.6. I never had any firewire problems or iPod problems.)

I'm happy so far. I didn't expect big things.

Oh--and Repair Permissions? I don't think I'm going to bother doing that anymore. Repair Permissions hasn't found ONE thing to repair since Panther came out.

Well I finally installed Mac OS X 10.3.7 on my Power Mac G4 last evening. I followed the directions of Apple and Doctor Q. Put my OWC Mercury Elite Firewire in the trash and then turned off the electric. Updated my virus software. Then I downloaded iCal & 10.3.7. Ran Repair Permissions. Rebooted my Mac it took about 1 minute 36 seconds. Running tip top today. Can't say as I notice any real differences.

Update seems fine, I don't really notice much difference on my Powerbook. One thing that I noticed after the update is several of my programs show a "date modified" as April 1, 1976. What is up with that? Anyone else have that happen? It doesn't seem to have any effect on the computer, it just looks funny and why would Apple's files be created with a date that old anyhow? That was 2 months before I was born!

If only Apple would fix the problem with a .local DNS suffix. The Active Directory domain I work under uses a .local suffix; they are reluctant to change again because they just changed from a .com when they cleared up DNS confusion with internal and external networks.

I'm surprised Apple is referring to the .local configuratior at http://www.multicastdns.org/DLLC/ (third party fix); why can't they implement it into the OS?

I ended up doing an Archive and Install, at which point nothing was working at all. When I started Safari, for example, I was not able to open a new window. I was however lucky to find that I could connect my FW HD and grab all the files I needed. Once that was done a clean install cleared up all of my problems. Now after downloading all of the updates, I'm back and running smoothly.

At least you are able to use your Mail. Mine hasn't worked since I started using Mac OS X this past January. Seems to be a compatibility with our earthlink setup.

I just checked, all my modify dates seem to be in order. That is weird. I remember having that happen once when I was using Mac OS 9, but it happened with some of the files which caused some problems.

At least you got it to work again. I'm glad you found a workable solution.
