I hope by this you mean I can search eBay without beach-balling, if so this has made my day.

I've noticed Safari is loads faster, and the UI seems faster too.

AppleMatt (runs off to check eBay)

It will be an awesome thing if 10.3.9 fixes getting the beach-ball on certain sites. It has become very annoying at times.

I checked out Safari 1.2.4 via http://www.24fun.com/downloadcenter/benchjs/benchjs.html and it was very slow. Camino destroyed it. Now, Safari 1.3 is REALLY fast for JavaScript. Here are my test results:

Safari 1.2.4: 198.23 seconds (#487 our of 502)
Camino 0.83: 18.64 seconds (#306 out of 502)
Safari 1.3: 12.91 seconds (#109 out of 502)

Safari is definitely faster for me now in java:

Safari, 10.29 seconds, ranking: 103 out of 502 testers
Firefox 1.x, 23.33 seconds, ranking: 323 out of 502 testers

I just reinstalled Security Update 2005-02 (tip from Apple forum) and it cured my Java problem. Java is now working fine with Safari.

:D

It seems 10.3.9 update crushed Safari. Deleting plist from Safari Preference did not work. Security update 2005-02 did not work. Re-installing combo update 10.3.9 did not work. Java 1.4.2 update 2 did not work.

Time to take out the OS disk for clean install back to 10.3.7. Good thing I only tried this update with Ti. I think I will wait till Apple fix this before I risk my other 2 PBs.

On a whim, I downloaded Security Update 2005-002 from the OS X download site and reinstalled it (I had previously installed it from Software Update prior to installing 10.3.9). This fixed java and now my java based applications work!

AHHHH! THANK YOU MY FRIEND!

Regards..

Are you using Pithelmet or any other 3rd party stuff...? Early in this thread many complained that they had to uninstall different Safari enhancers after upgrading...

Another random note, if you click on a user name in the forum the profile box rolls out from the corner, I'm sure it didn't do this before. Apple gives us more eye candy - woohoo!! :p

(I'm using Safari by the way).

It did do this before. Just not in Safari. (Firefox, Camino, Mozilla, IE, Opera, OmniWeb...).

Meanwhile, the update makes the trackpad and mouse settings usable on my PowerBook. Window resizing, as someone else noted, is much better! No Java troubles here. :)

Interesting, considering that this post appears on the n'th page of a thread mainly discussing problems that the 10.3.9 update has been causing people. (Including a report that it's *still* screwing up external 1394 hard drives!)

This thread can in no way be taken as an overall indicator of the quality of this update - we always have a *very* vocal group that talks about all their issues with updates. Whether this group is in the minority or the majority can't be inferred from this thread since we discourage people from spamming the threads with "no problems here" or "works for me" posts.

You've been around long enough to know that AS...

Uninstall any Safari add-ons like AcidSearch. Mine didn't work either then I read about that. Now it runs great...much faster too.

I've just glanced over the PithHelmet and SIMBL pages, and there's something that bothers me a little...

(NB: I'm not a user of PithHelmet, or even Safari for that matter)

Shouldn't these tools which patch an existing application state clearly that they are liable to either stop functioning themseleves if the target program is updated, or cause any updated version of the target program to malfunction?

If I were running these kinds of utlities, and the target app started misbehaving, disabling the parasite apps would be the first thing I'd try -- even before posting a complaint on forums.macrumors.com ;)

There should be a quick, easy-to-access toggle which can universally disable runtime patching of applications, simply so that the user can trace the cause of any odd behaviour quickly & easily.

I'm not saying these apps are intrinsically bad. Indeed, apps like PithHelmet make Safari the perfect browser for many people. But doesn't it make sense to ensure the user's fully informed on the possible outcomes of using these apps at critical points such as after updating the system?

Activity Monitor Scroll Bar

Anyone else notice that the scroll bar in the activity monitor is a lot smaller?

Sound OK here..

After I installed 10.3.9 the sound in Doom 3 is gone. Does anyone else have a system they can test this with?

Sound in Doom 3 working fine after the update here.

Are you still not getting any sound?

No plug in for my Mac. So, I know there is no 3rd party plug-in which is getting in the way for the 10.3.9 and Safari 1.3. I downloaded good old 1.2 from Apple web site and I was able to use Safari with my Ti. Again, I did combo update to 10.3.9, security update 2005-002, disk permissions, and re-boot (all by the book, according to the previous post). This did not work either. Now I need to donwload Safari 1.2 again to get back on the trusty 1.2.

The update worked fine for me. Although Safari and Mail both take a lot longer to load, but once loaded they are fine.

I had pithhelmet installed and now when I load Safari a message from pithhelmet pops up telling me it detects a new version of safari and informing me that it is disabling itself. I was using the 2.2 release of pithhelmet - I wonder why so many of you aren't getting this message.

Apple will have to rush out another update

I see 3.2.10 coming out VERY quickly after all this.

So far, we've had broken java, broken safari, trashed external hard drives.

Apple has dealt with breaking external drives before, but breaking java and breaking safari are not small things.

3.2.8 had many small problems but nothing serious. (for me, fickering of my pb backlight was the worse, I simply turned off the light autosensing, and accepted that my pb was a little less cool for a while.. :( now fixed in 10.3.9 :)

3.2.7 seems to have been the best one so far....

My experience with 10..3.9.... (15" PB 1.5ghz) ... repaired everything with stermachine both before and after downloading.

Got blue screen of death when rebooting. EEK!

Yes, a blank featureless expanse of blue (with a mouse pointer that responded to trackpad input) on my laptop eek!!

After 10 mins, still blue, so rebooted.

Came up fine phew! Noticed that now the top menu takes an age to load when booting. Top righthand menubar icons (clock etc) are drawn way before the menu bar loads, making my powerbook look like some kind of borked windows machine :( ( for a few seconds / half a minute anyway)

Java - hmm broken huh.

Rebooted, repaired permissions, prebinding etc. still broken.

Dowloaded the security update and rebooted (again!) Java working fine now.

Normally use firefox, but after reading this thread, gave safari a go.

Wow, starts instantly! Like magic! But crashes when exiting. Twice so far.

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) at 0x77656276

Hmm. Borked. This update has its good points, but Apple have bodged up in other places.

Expect to see a new update PDQ.

It looks like this 10.3.9 is a mixed bag; it works for some and it does not for the rest. A good update should work without re-installing previous security updates or java updates. This is the first update I had a problem. The previous updates were installed successfuly without re-installing previous updates/patches. It seems this update requires more work from the user to make it work. My Safari in Ti is un-usable because of the update and I can only "upgrade" to 1.2 (which i did and I can use Safari now).

For the people having problems, are you running any sort of haxies or third party utilities?

Only had a Mac for the last couple of weeks (got bored with Windows and wanted to try a proper Operating System ;)) but after running with 10.3.8 for the last few weeks and today updating to 10.3.9 I cant say I've experienced any issues. Safari v1.3 seems much faster than the previous 1.2 version which was disappointing speedwise for me so so far so good!
