Thanks for the hint, I didn't know that!
So after updating to 10.3.9 and thinking that in Safari 1.3 there's no "save as" anymore, I reinstalled Safari 1.2. Now that I know that you can "save as" in safari 1.3 I'd like to go back to the new version, but software update doesn't let me install 10.3.9 again.
Anyone knows how to trick software update so I can install 10.3.9 (or Safari 1.3) a second time??

You should be able to download it from the Apple.com website by now (they usually take a bit longer to post it up there for some reason). It's in the Downloads section:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/

For some odd reason I felt compelled to read through all 16 pages of this thread AFTER installing the update. I can only say that I'm glad my installation went as smoothly as it did, particularly considering that I was trying to write a Java program for a friend immediately after installing the update. Anyway, no issues here on my old PowerBook and this thread has opened my eyes to some cool plug-ins that I'd certainly look at using when they are fixed (AcidSearch looks like something I could have used months ago).

Overall, it looks to have been a good update (Safari is fabulous) but I feel sorry for the guys that have experienced the problems.

Next stop, Tiger Town. :D

When running Software Update, one should NEVER have external FireWire hard drives connected (unless the external FW drive is your boot drive). Eject the FW drive, turn it off and disconnect the FW cable. THEN install your SW updates.

Anyway you may not be completely out of luck. It's possible that your FW drive will appear when you open Disk Utility (with your drive connected via FW, not USB). If it appears in Disk Utility it should be grayed out. Select it and then click "Mount."

I didn't know about disconnecting FW drives, before upgrading. No luck under Disk Utility. Disk doesn't show up when using the FW connection. Any ideas on how to fix it?

I've seen enough

Thanks to all the beta testers out there. I'm going to update now that the 'ol .9 has been battle tested.

Edit: Latest update seems to have fixed issue I had accessing a vendor site.
No issues so far, or ever, hopefully!

I hope by this you mean I can search eBay without beach-balling, if so this has made my day.

I've noticed Safari is loads faster, and the UI seems faster too.

AppleMatt (runs off to check eBay)

Wow I just realized that places with lots of flash ads are loading very quick! Weather.com always took more than 30 seconds or something just to render, and now it's very fast. Thank goodness.

In regards to the fix for ps fonts, is this why my machines (12"PB, 17" iMac G5) take forever to start up? I've installed 10.3.9 but noticed maybe a slight speed up in start up time (7-8min as opposed to 10).

And I really hope this fixes the kernel panic on my 12"pb (867) that stops the mouse and keyboard from working. It actually froze just as I was about to run this update. With a 10 minute start up time, that bug was really starting to pmo.

faster Safari; whether to upgrade

nerve.com seems much faster also

Interesting that some people think this update is too much trouble, or too risky to install, and will "just wait 2 weeks" for Tiger - to install the very first version of a major new MacOS release. If history repeats itself, lots of issues will turn up only after public release - some major, some minor - and will take some time to get ironed out. I may get a copy to play with, and I'm really looking forward to upgrading when I'm confident the apps/printer drivers/etc. I use will work, but I'm gonna wait for 10.4.1, or 2, or ???

i notice now in safari 1.3 when i click the search and quick links fields on macrumors i get a little drop down menu... before it would just appear...

Safari 1.3 lightning fast

Has no-one else noticed this, pages load as fast as Firefox.

Safari has always been slow on by 2mbit line.

Now everything pops right up, and no problems since update unlike other reports.

Power Mac dual 1.25 GHz (FW800)

I tried a 10.3.9 install on a firewire (800) drive and it mostly seems ok, but Safari takes ages to load the first time from a start-up (12 or 13 bounces in the dock). After quitting and launching again it loads in one bounce, even if I log out and in again... in 10.3.8 it takes about 2 or 3 bounces consistently (albeit that's on my internal SATA drive). Is it the drives or what gives? Anyone else had a similar issue?

Need Your Help!!! UPDATE

OK Guys,
I've really managed to screw up here. I was in Safari at the time Mac Installer was optimising. At about 75% optimised Safari crashed. I was able to relaunch, but noticed that the version no. was 1.3

Eventually got to the end of optimisation restarted and now when I'm loading pages with tables & images Safari loads the text part, then sits there and wait.

Notably Apple Store page.

Ironic - I was going to buy Tiger today, but can't now.

I've done the usual - sudo periodic repairs, prebindings, cache, disk permissions and even tried reinstalling the update - nothing  :(

Please, please help!!

UPDATE: I found using Firefox that it gets stuck - but still displays the page. However, in the status bar it says "Read a248.e.akamai.net" (When loading the Apple Store Page)

I've had real problems getting the football page from Yahoo.co.uk - Firefox stalls with a message saying Transferring data from eur.news1.yimg.com. But gets nowhere. Have I really ****ed my mac up?

I know this it trying to get something off the server, and it is happening on all the same pages as Safari gets stuck, but it manages to display some images, whereas Safari gets stuck.

I'm on the verge of spending the evening getting hold of my Panther disks and starting from scratch...

OK Panic over - the update fixed Passive Network settings, which were selected for some reason on my network settings - once I got home I tried Dial-up which worked fine - then went through my Network settings and tried again - all great. Safari now does seem faster than previously... Sorry if I caused anyone to hold back from updating - blame my incompetence - had one of those heart in mouth moments...

I installed the fresh copy of 10.3.7 on my Ti (erase & install) as I had some issues with 10.3.9. I started from the beginning and ran all those updates including 10.3.9 combo update. I worked. I can use Safari and no other problems so far.

I installed 10.3.9 combo on my 12" PB. That was an update from 10.3.7 to 10.3.9 via combo update via software update in System Preference. Safari worked without installing any additional patches. So far, no problems.

I will install 10.3.9 on my 15" PB soon, as it is still running on 10.3.8. Hope it works as well.
I am pleased to report all of my PBs are running 10.3.9 and Safari 1.3. I checked my banks' website and was able to use the online banking as before. I can view Java-equipped websites without no problem. As other posters commented, Safari 1.3 is much faster than 1.2. Since all of my three different PBs are working well under 10.3.9, I think this update was a success.

Apple's installer is too dumb to update Safari in any other folder but the Applications folder. I had Safari in a different partition, and realized the update installed Safari 1.3 into my Applications folder, and left 1.2.4 alone in my Internet partition. So, it is probably in there now. -JB

Thanks for the tip, ShnikeJSB. I searched my hard drive and found that Safari 1.3 had been placed into an obscure folder. Anyway now I'm up to date and ready to see what wonders the new Safari has in store for me!

I would leave your external FW drive connected. Run disk permissions again and then reboot. It's worth a try. If not then I would run a 3rd party utility like Norton or Tech Tools Pro.

It seems to have been one of those unusually "interesting" updates for many people. Somehow it was an uneventful upgrade here (yay). With the Javascript changes, Safari is even usable now!

Mac OSX 10.3.9=MDD Audio bug still present

Does anyone know if this fixes the loud, distorted audio on the MDD powermacs that started a couple of updates ago?

No, the MDD audio bug didn't get fixed in Mac OSX 10.3.9 update.

Darn it, Apple! Couldn't you have gotten things right with the final version of Panther!

I guess we'll have to wait for Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger and hope that will address our MDD Audio Distortion Problem.

This is from a comment about a hint on macosxhints.com
The most reliable way I have found (it seems to work 100% of the time for me) is to reboot in single-user mode (holding [COMMAND]-S) - then run" /sbin/fsck -y". When I exit single-user mode I have 9 lovely firewire disk icons sitting on my desktop.
Here's a helpful comment from another hint:
I just got me an external firewire drive, which is too noisy for me too, and now found out, how to mount it with macosX terminal-
just type in 'disktool' - with '-l' you get a list of all mounted drives with their names- so when you know the name of your drive you can unmount(drag on paperback etc) it and later mount it with 'disktool -m diskname' - just 'disktool' gives you a list of all commands.

Just to add another data point...

No problems experienced by me from the update to 10.3.9. I did the "usual" repairing of permissions before updating, and used the large combo updater instead of the incremental one. When I run "java -version" from the command line I get the same result as before the update, so I'm assuming that's all fine (I don't think I have any Java apps to test).

So: the update is not guaranteed to give you problems. I just hope that the "necessity" of repairing permissions before an update doesn't hold as strongly for 10.4.x updates--I'm going to convince my parents to get a Mac mini, and I really don't want to have to teach them too many of the obscure tricks I've learned over the years.

FWIW I've never done a repair permissions before an update and I've never had a problem either. This is since the early 10.3 releases which is when I switched.

They Wouldn't...

But you have to wonder, are these errors there to motivate us to buy Tiger? I switched when it was at 10.3.7, so I don't have much experience, but 10.3.8 worked just fine for me, and 10.3.9 just destroyed safari for me (though i did fix it)! Seriously, was 10.2.9 this bad? Just a thought, totally unsubstantiated.

this is a very good post
it demonstrates a possible cause for all 10.3.9 update problems

quit all user application/processes before you launch 10.3.9 installer
(or any OS updater)
EVERYTHING!
open ActivityMonitor and make sure that you don't have any java there
if you're running tomcat server or similar java could be a root process
so kill it too

that's what I'm always doing
and I never had any problem with any 10.X update
10.3.9 included

After repairing disk permissions I log out and then log back in to make sure nothing's running . . . it's a bit easier than analyzing Activity Monitor processes. And of course I eject, switch off and unplug (the FW cables of) all FireWire devices.

Safari 1.3 now crashes EVERY TIME it loads a Java applet from Yahoo! Games. grrr... no more Spades, Pool, or Dominoes for me:(

I should've read this forum before updating this morning.

I'm sorry you're having trouble! :( But, I tried several Yahoo Java games in Safari after updating, and they worked for me, so there's hope yet.... Try all the usual suspects...repair permissions, perhaps uninstall/reinstall Java.
