After repairing disk permissions I log out and then log back in to make sure nothing's running . . . it's a bit easier than analyzing Activity Monitor processes. And of course I eject, switch off and unplug (the FW cables of) all FireWire devices.
you're absolutely right
I'd recommend to unplug all devices USB included
and I'd recommend for laptops to plug in computer to the power
outlet to make sure that installation won't be interrupted if something will be wrong with computer's battery

watch out...

I upgraded to 10.3.9 on my PowerMac G5 and as soon as I log in after the reboot, my cat puked grass up onto my new carpet. Since my update to 10.3.9 was the only thing that changed in the time between my cat coming back inside and puking, I blame Apple!

Ahh, but do you have a Windows machine? I had exactly the same problem with XP, although considering the amount of patches there are, it's really no surprise that my fluffy dog pukes while I'm installing them... ;)

x11 broken, some pages in safari screwed up

no problems doing the update. i was frightened at first because the setup assistant came up after the reboot, but i think it's just because i never entered my address or phone number the first time around. all my settings were preserved.

safari seems plenty stable so far, but at least on one site (friendster.com), it renders completely wrong and ilegibly. maybe i'll be switching to firefox or camino.

x11 now will not launch. i'm trying to figure it out. any hints?

So did Safari do Friendster correctly before? I guess long, long ago, in a galaxy far far away, I might have used Safari for Friendster, so I'm guessing the answer is yes? Firefox handles it fine, so probably Camino does too.

For X11, does it bounce in the dock and then die? Have you tried launching it from the X11 icon in the utils folder, as opposed to getting it to launch when an X program is opened?

Has anybody installed the update on a 2000 model Power Mac G4 yet? Also on an iBook G3?

Safari definitely broke after this update. I figured PithHelmet had something to do with it, but didn't even think about AcidSearch, so thanks to everyone who posted about that! I removed both and installed the newest versions that work with Safari 1.3 and all is better now.

Here's something that got me: If, when you installed AcidSearch, you chose "All Users", you'll need to delete the SIMBL folder from both the main Library and the Library in your home folders.

I've noticed improvements on some page loads, but I'm not terribly impressed with tabs multi-tasking. For instance, one of the forum pages was loading in a background tab and it was causing the other tabs that were loading to hang. Once I closed the forum tab all the other tabs started loading fine. I hope that's a fluke.

Tiger, I'm ready for ya. :D

Just upgraded 1835 Xserves to 10.3.9.
Looks good so far.
Wow, that was quick. Don't you guys QA a release like this before rolling it into production? Or have you had it in your shop for a while already? Just curious.

Does the uninstaller automatically do this? I didn't have it on my computer already (the installer package), so I just followed the directions on the website, which told me to look for both folders. Actually, I'm not 100% sure why I even bothered to re-install AcidSearch, since I almost never use Safari anymore, or why I kept looking for PithHelmet to be updated for 10.3.9....I guess I will just leave them off my computer until Tiger at least. If I like Safari 2.0, then we'll see.

Finder hogging cpu cycles

After installing this update on my work iMac G5, the computer seemed to be running very slowly. I noticed that the finder was hogging 60%+ of the cpu cycles in Activity Monitor. At first I though it was trying to sync, but that wasn't the case, and I couldn't figure out what was going on, so I trashed the plist file for the finder (hopefully a good idea  ) and restarted. Now back to normal. Weird.

[edit: added info about restart]

X11 solution

re Safari, yes, friendster worked fine on it up to now. but i just tried loading a friendster page again and this time it completely crashed the browser. guess there's no help there!

i figured out the X11 problem by looking at the error message in the console, which was something about not being able to load a library. the 10.3.9 update seemed to have removed /usr/X11R6. but i looked around and found that it had been put in a new directory: /Previous Systems/Previous System 1/usr/X11R6. so i just copied it over, repaired permissions for good luck, rebooted, and now X11 and MATLAB are happy once more.

Wow Safari is really screwed up with Java applets. I use Firefox mostly but I tried to play Bookworm on Safari and Safari just quits. That really sucks I must admit.

Has anyone noticed that Azureus & Limewire fails to launch in 10.3.9?

Are you joking? Have you missed the pages and pages of Java discussion? Or do they continue to fail after reinstalling the 2005-002 security update?

I'd just like to note that Safari and Limewire (Along with every other App I use) is workingly perfectly fine after 10.3.9.

It's easier to bitch than to read.

It didn't crash for me today, but it does still look messed up....

Wow, this is interesting. I wonder if any other issues people have experienced involve stuff getting moved to previous systems. I don't *have* a /Previous Systems/, though, so I'm guessing none of *my* issues.

And tsk, tsk, MATLAB still runs in X?

Normally we do but....

It had 3 fixes that we had to have.
LDAP was badly broken for us. We would sometimes have to reboot systems multiple times to get LDAP connections to work.
10.3.9 works like a champ. We saw the difference immediately.
We also badly needed the updated Ethernet driver and some NFS fixes included in it.
We have already seen major improvements.

iTunes Crashed...

Well, I upgraded to 10.3.9 yesterday. Repaired permissions -- no problems. Then just now iTunes froze-up while browsing the iTunes Music Store. iTunes has NEVER frozen-up on me before, ever. I had to Force Quit iTunes. Not sure if this is 10.3.9 -related or not, but it's sure a pretty big coincidence.

Sounds like a great update for you guys. I didn't, and haven't, had problems with OS X updates, which you wouldn't expect if you read through this thread (or any update thread on MR).
