Apple continues to provide Mac OS X 10.4.2 updates to developers. Apple has reportedly posted a new build to the Developer's site with further bug fixes related to Dashboard memory management and iChat video conferencing

The latest Mac OS X 10.4.2 versions (as of 8C40) are said to include a Widget Manager as described in this ThinkSecret article.

The new widget manager reportedly has the appearance of a widget itself -- but unlike most widgets, it cannot be flipped around to reveal special options or preferences. The widget manager's design is faintly similar to that of the iChat buddy list; it is laid out as an oversized window that lists all of a user's installed Dashboard widgets. Running down the left side of the list are checkboxes which allow the user to quickly enable and disable widgets. Along the right side of third-party widgets are red stop sign-like icons that allow the user to delete widgets -- upon clicking the icon, an overlaying dialog asks for confirmation.

A screenshot of the Widget Manager can be seen here.

the new widget manager looks pretty sweet.. the question is.. where is this 10.4.2?

It seems like 10.4.2 has been in development longer than the entire 10.4. Must be alot of fixes that needed to be resolved. Though a widget manager is very needed. Should have shipped with one when Tiger launched imo.

So is that bar at the bottom just not going to be there anymore? You click on something and that window pops up? What about that ripple effect, that's not really needed anymore.

Ever since I got Tiger I haven't been able to option+click on CDs and hit duplicate, it gives me an error. I wish they would fix that.

Also, spotlight still doesn't work with InDesign or Illustrator files. It's supposed to look inside files but if I type somehting in an InDesign file, save it, and search for it in spotlight it doesn't show up.

Love the weather channel widget though.

Tiger is still buggy for me sometimes... it needs a lot of fixes.

I don't understand why the widget manager would be portrayed as a widget itself.

Isn't that potentially confusing for users?

I thought they would better integrate it into that Widget Dock at the bottom of the screen.

A stop sign... or in the US, it's a No Entry / Wrong Way sign. Either way an odd choice, when the known circle-slash icon is used in Mail etc.

Anyway, I think the bottom widget bar is still there: this is to take things in and out OF that bar, right? And it's launched by a button on that bar.

(Translation widget needs to be online, BTW--maybe that's the problem?)

The bar on the bottom will be there. The Widget Manager just makes it easier to delete Widgets, hide Widgets from the bar and things like that.

Yeah the Widget Manager pops up after clicking on a button that hovers just above the dock. As for the ripple effect, well, we'll see what happens. Who knows maybe everyone will be able to see the ripple effect instead of just people with core image cards.

Maybe they will fix the translation widget so it actually works too! It's just there... when I type things in it doesn't give a translation or anything. It's just, broken... doesn't do anything.
I think that is a web server problem not a Widget problem. Systran is probably at fault for this one.

I could be wrong but it probably has a lot to do with how the CDs are encoded to not be duplicated. If you burn your own CD and duplicate it you shouldn't have a problem.

There are pros and cons for being an early adaptor. I actually like being an early adaptor for several reasons. You are right though Tiger still has quite a few bugs.

 I was hoping 10.4.2 would come out soon, but it looks like we've got at least another 2 weeks or so before we get some updatey-goodness...

Ah well... as long as it works well when we do get it :D

reality

The date of release has been way off

I haven't experienced any real errors with my Tiger so far(most likely because i'm not using alot of the programs that seem to be having the problems)but it seems to me like everyones estimates have been so far off, i mean with the pic of the widget manager this guy acts as if it's going to be june at the latest, last time i checked its july...

I have seen rumors of HARDWARE that have been easier to track and predict then this build of tiger.

Maybe its just me.

Now that Widget Manager is just plain sexy. Anyhoo, hope Apple can get 10.4.2 out the door soon. Safari has been a bit buggy for me lately...

NIce to see that Apple is going to work on widget memory managment. They sure use a lot of Ram. Those few bug fixes over couple of days means that there aren't any bugs left, at least that they know about.

I definitely can't wait for the update. Tiger + Logic Pro 7 has been a nightmare. I had to go back to Panther.

Here's to hoping 10.4.2 is a winner.

A welcome addition/improvement indeed!

Just get the thing out.
I'm 2 seconds from moving back to panther. The number of bugs in Tiger is a mind boggling nightmare for a working professional!

Tiger has been amazingly fluid for me. My only problem is that something is destroying the "Show Desktop" feature in Expose...maybe 10.4.2 will fix it...maybe not. The memory management sounds like something my poor li'l iBook could use.

As for the widget manager--I prefer to do all of this via System Preferences with the "Widgets" control panel from Ego Systems. I hope the update doesn't break that somehow.

If they're going to add that to dashboard they need to include the ability to put the widgets on the desktop w/o third party apps.

What do you mean? Did it ever work for you since you got Tiger? Have you tried putting it on a different function key or activating it via a mouse gesture? Or does it work partially and then do something goofy? :(
