I really don't have an opinion about the widget management process - the way it's implemented at the moment seems OK to me.

What IS a massive problem and makes the Dashboard unusable for me is the memory issue. The idea of leaving a novelty app. like this running in the background for a couple of days with a handful of widgets open to find it's using 700MB RAM is ridiculous.

For me, sort the memory thing out or forget it (especially as Apple are so mean with the stock RAM in their hardware).

disk unmount bug

hello,

with two diffrent computers (running os 10.4.1) i got the prob of big crash
when i unmout my sonyericsson k750i via usb.
after a few second the gray sreen saying: restart your computer)
(simular to the windows bluescreen)

anyone with same prob? or fix idea?

hope 10.4.2 will fix it ...

ps i guess update to 10.4.2. takes longer for having more time for developers to adapt their applications

Gosh! Do I hate those scroll bars. What's wrong with standard, old and familiar aqua widgets?! First, the new ones seem to react to scrollwheels depending on the developer will or discipline, then no up/down arrow, and then yet another frigging different UI style we have to cope with in OS X. It is starting to become a mess…

Speaking for myself, it's because while nobody expects a new OS to be 100% perfect in all circumstances, Tiger's level of maturity is unacceptably low. Becuase of the way Tiger has been, I have been unable to use my iBook on battery power on my lap because within seconds, it has heated up to ridiculous levels and is painfully warm to touch.

Add to that Airport problems. Add to that the stupid iPhoto bug. Add the lack of status bar in Mail. Add the piss-poor implementation of Spotlight. Add the fact that the Finder still won't remember the default sizes for windows or sidebar. Add the fact that Dashboard is, again, implemented in such a ridiculously un-user friendly manner.

This damned OS was released over two months ago. That we're still waiting for an experience as fluid as Panther is frankly reprehensible. Apple should have waited to release Tiger instead of rushing it out in this state.

Changing the subject slightly, can anyone confirm or deny whether the status bar has been returned to Mail in this current build? I am very concerned that it will not return until 10.5, when Apple will deem us worthy to get this feature back (if we pay their $129 fee).

Sorry, bad mood.

Amen to that. However, my biggest fear is that an increasing tendency towards seemingly stupid rationale when taking certain UI and implementation decisions has more to do with OS X's progressive mess than rush. Somebody at Apple is beginning to not give a damn about consistency.

I appreciate that you and others are highly frustrated but for many people, Tiger is just as fluid, if not more so, than Panther. I have the iPhoto bug but everything else works without problems; I've had no kernel panics, no freezing of the system and just one iPhoto/Safari app crash since installation. I've installed Tiger (archive & install) on two other systems (Powerbook/iBooks) with the same results.

I do agree with the poor Dashboard implementation but I do believe that Apple didn't expect it to take off as it has.

I've also been thinking more about the Mail activity monitor; in some ways it fits the Mac m.o. where the detail isn't shown unless someone needs it. There's an indicator that something is going on which for many people is all they need (and with higher speed connections, the times might not be that great) while those who need more detail can check under Activity.

What I don't get is why Apple don't place the widget manager in system preferences like the one I'm running at the moment. I'd much rather keep it separate.

Will I have to remove Dowtown Software's manager before updating?

Looks very nice.

I never imagined the widget deal would take off this fast for Apple.

I suppose Konfabulator is not happy.

Have the widget control in System Preferences where it belongs. Also a simple list isn't good for hundreds of widgets. Have a way to create metadata and navigate the widgets like iTunes and Spotlight enabled.

Also I wish I had a bigger screen or virtual screens that I can toggle. I need Expose for all my virtual screens.

mine gets goofy aswell . like ill hit the hot corner and itll like clear the windows them come back , then ill hit it again and again and itll do the same thing.
One annoying Tiger bug (feature?) I found in Tiger is that you can no longer Command-Option drag a Finder file (creating an alias), and in the same motion go to the Show Desktop hot corner, and drop the fresh alias on the desktop. It worked in Panther, now it won't let you. Now, I have to create the alias in the Finder, drag it to the desktop, then click on it and rename it because Finder appends "Copy" to it since it can't make two files of the same name in the same folder. What a PITA.

A bug that is common for me is when I am trying to save a webpage for reference using either save to PDF or Web Archive. Safari will hang for a second or two and then crash giving me an error message.

I also have problems with many of the other bugs such as: iPhoto not saving my edits properly, Widget Memory Leaks, Mail not connecting properly to a couple of my mailboxes, and ScreenSavers not looking right.

ARGH! I just my Airport fixed.
It is such a major annyoance that it doesn't connect immediately upon waking from sleep (or sometimes not at all)...

I'm sure Apple is trying to get this update as "perfect" as possible. AppleInsider said this was going to be the update that is sold in stores. (so instead of buying 10.4.0, you'll be buying 10.4.2)

Any ideas when 10.4.2 will be released? Next week during Macworld Boston?
I hope so. I think next Tuesday would be a reasonable timeframe for it's release.

wow !! I am so impressed .... WIDGETS ! give me more more more.
Yes, the .... WIDGET memory mgt ! that is key dude. That is all I need. Meanwhile who cares about Apple's entire line approaching archaic futureless technology. That is right, the 3ghz G5, hmmm, that was due last summer, oops, sorry. Not that that would make a difference anyway.
But give me widgets and more widgets. Who cares about the crawling speed of the hardware architecture !!!

Yep, that is unfortunately and fortunately the state of things at Apple as it decided to go Intel (fortunately). Unfortunately that means we'll have to wait. And instead of getting better machines we'll get WIDGETS :)

LOVELY

I wish Apple focused more on giving us improved performance rather that those stupid widgets!

It might be released then, but it won't be done in any connection to Macworld Boston. Apple don't even acknowledge that the event exists, after they threw their toys out of their pram when IDG moved the expo from NYC to Boston.

I really wish you would have to comment when you vote...
People rate things negative all the time with no reasoning.

When you're using Exposé in general... this is what it's designed to do. If you have it set to a corner... make sure you don't LEAVE your cursor in the corner for more than 2 seconds or something because when you take your cursor out, the windows will come back. The same exact thing happens when you HOLD the F11 key down for a second and let it go. You have to tap it quickly to get the windows to stay where they are. Try it, you'll see what I mean.

Erm… no it isn't designed to do that, because it simply doesn't do it. I've been using screen corners since the day I got Panther in October 2003, and I guarantee you this is not the functionality. I've even just tested your claim to make sure I've not missed something. :)

You're right that this is the way it works with the keyboard (holding and letting go etc) but this is not the case with screen corners.

My bad. I don't use screen corners... I just figured the same rules applied as the mouse and keyboard buttons.

The widget manager looks great. I hope it resides in System Preferences, not the widget bar.

I really hope they bring activity monitor back to Mail.

Come on Apple, hurry up and get this out.

I have to say that I am very happy with Tiger. IMO it is faster, prettier and far more stable than 10.3.9. I have yet to have a single problem on my iBook (no heat problems whilst on battery) and my iMac G5.

I would like Apple to make it easier to remove crap widgets from Dashboard - I'm assuming that's what the widget manager will do.

MadDoc,

I am running Tiger 10.4.1 and have just used command-option on two applications in the Finder window and dragged them straight to my desktop with the result of an alias appearing there. Why do you need to do something with the 'show desktop' option? Where did you drag the alias to if not the desktop? The same thing happens when I command-option drag a file to the Desktop section of the sidebar in Finder, and an alias immediately appears on the desktop itself.

All I have lost under Tiger is the use of my Microtek scanner so I am using it in OS9 instead.

Otherwise I find Tiger far better than Panther and have had no problems apart from having to ditch Virex which led to some odd system behaviour.

Still looking forward to 10.4.2 even though it doesn't seem necessary (for me anyway).

Pete.
