I really wish Tiger would add two must have features:
First ability to merge directories a la Windows style. If I grab a Documents directory from one computer and copy it over another Documents directory I want all the original content to stay there unless it's the same filename as the file comming from the new Documents directory. Right now Tiger will simply erase old Documents and replace with the new one. This is stupid.

Second, Tiger should provide one place where Developers could put their uninstallers, like Windows has. This removes a headache where simple delete of application does not fully remove it from the system. Let the developers of application remove their stuff, not user. I run into situation with Unreal running slow on my new 800xt card, only because it had .ini information stored for the old one. Deleting Unreal folder and reinstalling it didn't help, because configuration files where stored in Library folder. If Unreal had real uninstaller it would've cleaned itself proper.

Finally Safari is unstable sometimes and quits for no reason. This should be fixed by now - Safari has been out there for a while.

Any ideas when 10.4.2 will be released? Next week during Macworld Boston?

I doubt that Apple will release anything next week. They have abandoned the East coast as far as conventions are concerned, at least under the leadership of Steve.

At this point any opinion on the release of 10.4.2 is pure speculation. Like many others have posted, Apple will make the release when it's ready.

The widget manager looks great. I hope it resides in System Preferences, not the widget bar.

I really hope they bring activity monitor back to Mail.

Come on Apple, hurry up and get this out.

CMD-0? That's the only Activity Viewer I know about in Mail. Do you mean the "% done" in the toolbar? I would like to have that back.

There is a little clock/pie icon when sending or receiveing, but it would be nice to have the toolbar back to get a little more info..

Overall I enjoy Tiger; my only issues are a few random crashes in Safari, iTunes and some other third party apps, also Dashboard managment/organization is a joke.

I'm using Amnesty 1.0 now to have some widgets live on the desktop. That's working pretty well, and I love having quick access to widgets through it's menu bar icon (like being able to open the calculator, use it, then close it easily so it doesn't continute to hog memory when I don't need it). I'm not looking forward to ponying up $20 for the non-demo version tho... Can you hear me AAPL, get your s* together!

[Spotlight is] supposed to look inside files but if I type somehting in an InDesign file, save it, and search for it in spotlight it doesn't show up.

Adobe needs to write an InDesign importer for spotlight.

A stop sign... or in the US, it's a No Entry / Wrong Way sign. Either way an odd choice, when the known circle-slash icon is used in Mail etc.
Maybe it's a minus sign surrounded by a red circle.

I bet they may release .2 tomorrow ... they always release updates to Mac on Mon, Wed, or Fri or so I have been told.

Lucky us, tomorrow's a Friday. Must be time for an update?

If they're going to add that to dashboard they need to include the ability to put the widgets on the desktop w/o third party apps.
Just in terminal "defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES"

Don't forget to mention how to move a widget off of the dashboard: while dragging a widget, hide the dashboard (or show the dashboard to put it back on). Also, restart the Dashboard before attempting; type ``killall Dock'' after the defaults command.

how do you install new widgets any way?
Find them on a website, double click to download, click "yes" to allow the program to install... and they'll be there. (That's installed in your user-specific widgets folder, not the shared/generic widgets folder)

The more secure way is to make the folder ~/Library/Widgets, if needed, and put your widgets in there. They will then appear in your widget dock.

like this running in the background for a couple of days with a handful of widgets open to find it's using 700MB RAM is ridiculous.
Be sure not to confuse Real Memory (RAM) with Virtual Memory (HD). If your dashboard is using 700MB or RAM, then there's a problem with a widget (or two or three).

Also I wish I had a bigger screen or virtual screens that I can toggle. I need Expose for all my virtual screens.
What?

One annoying Tiger bug (feature?) I found in Tiger is that you can no longer Command-Option drag a Finder file (creating an alias), and in the same motion go to the Show Desktop hot corner, and drop the fresh alias on the desktop.

You can if you hit command-option after showing the desktop.

I am really happy Apple hasn't released .2 yet.

It means they are serious about getting all of the bugs out--or at least as many as is reasonably possible. Given how bad Tiger is, I am willing to be patient for Apple to get it right.

I hope .2 solves the majority of the problems. I have a fear that there is a lot wrong in the underpinnings and the bugs are just the surface--e.g. why is Q2D turned off?--but again, this is just a fear of mine.

I am really hoping .2 is everything we would expect from Apple in terms of quality. Tiger, .mac and the new iApps, all need a ton of bug fixing...

But isnt it fun to comment about it all in one place ;)

True Enough,

As for Tiger, My only complaint is the infamous "chirping" sound the occurs during graphic intensive stuff. It didn't happen during Panther.

It's all over the Apple message boards, Talking about disabling a proccessor on your PM G5, Bla bla NAP using the Chud tools. I for one refuse to turn off NAP and cripple a processor, so if 10.4.2 can fix the Chirp then I'll wait as long as it takes, otherwise Tiger has been a joy. I'm confused by all the reports of Safari crashing, Safari is totally stable on my end.

And what is so Un user friendly about the Dashboard? Other than having to manually trash a widget to get rid of one.

Other than making my G5 sound like a cricket farm, Am I the only one that thinks Tiger is great?

Why do you need to do something with the 'show desktop' option?
I need to do this because I usually can't see the desktop (many open fullscreen apps beneath it). I could do it by using the Hide Others command first, but that's an extra step. However, I played around and did find out how to make it work. After you begin the drag of the alias, you have to release the command and option keys (but not the mouse), then it'll let you clear off the windows using a hot corner and drop onto the desktop. In Panther you could do the operation with the keys held down.

HiRez , I see your problem. Like I said in my previous post, why not drag the file to the desktop in the Finder's sidebar, then you only need the one window visible and it doesn't matter that the real desktop is hidden.

Glad you found a solution.

Pete.

Just release the f patch. Don't care about these "Cool" s. None would be kool with the internet connection broken !!!!

I wonder if that's in anyway related to the sound I get out of my Quicksilver '02...though mine sounds more like a "click-buzz-whir" and only does it occasionally and indeterminately. But then I've had that since I got the computer.

Pressing issues

I'm still waiting to upgrade to Tiger.

First as so many people reported severe issues with the OS and secondly as I could not really
convince myself that it offers something really one has to have. Some of the upgrades should be simply not
coupled to the OS; e.g. Safari, Preview, Mail!!

On the other hand, instead of further refining the appearance of the Aqua interface, the responsible at Apple for the UI
is just turing it into something like a tabloid paper.

Dots of screaming colors scattered over the screen, with their ugly plastic look, i.e. widgets, are just the first step.

There are more pressing things do be done in Mac OS than spoiling existing good things.

In general, it worries me, that all in all Mac OS10.4+ is lagging far behind the possibilities one would expect our time could / should offer.
It still lives from the Next legacy (from around 1990!!!)

Where is a seamless and reliable integration of handwriting, speech recognition etc?

Disturbing conclusion: No quantum jump in sight.

Does any one know how long does it usually takes Apple to release an update after it has been made available to developers? (assuming that its the final build of an update of course)

I don't know about the Quicksilver, everything I've read on the Apple Msg boards talk about this being a Pwer Mac g5 problem only, Some people reported a "rythmic" beep that occurs no matter what is running, and others (like me) are experiencing a "chirping" sound during graphic intensive stuff like, the rss screensaver, scrolling through web pages, and Graphic intensive games like War Craft ect.

The sound can be dampened by switching to "automatic" instead of highest in engergy saver, but it will always be there unless one loads the CHUD dev. tools from the installer disc, and then disabling NAP, which essentially keeps your processors from running in idle mode. Of course this causes temps to rise a bit, and leads to a question about warranty and if turning off NAP voids some warranty issues.

ANYWAY, I doubt the sound you are experiencing is the same thing, the sound I am talking about starts with the installation of Tiger, and is limited to Powermac G5's

and is friggin annoying as Hell
:(

Seems like things get release about two weeks after the final seed, but it really depends on what it is. And you never really know a seed is the final seed until it gets released two weeks later, either. ;)

i'm a newbie to both mac (i've finally seen the light) as well as this forum.

To me, this waiting till the NEW features are 100% working is complete BS in my opinion, especially a widget manager of all things. does noone at apple see the irony in this situation...waiting for WIDGETS?? If noone had problems with the existing version, then, fine, take your time developing .2. However, here and on every Mac forum that i've recently joined including apple's own, i see tons of complaints regarding bugs in tiger, esp. for those who upgraded. To me, the way apple is going about doing this is completely back-arse-wards. Almost micro$lothish ( but not quite).

Put out the fires FIRST. then plant new trees/have new construction.

Yeah, I have the same thing. Most of the time I attenuate it and don't notice but once I do notice it, it can be really annoying. As you said, in WoW it's very noticeable, especially when adjusting the camera angle with the mouse button held down. I'm pretty sure I still had this in Panther, but now that you mention it, it does seem like it might be worse since installing Tiger. I've seen the problem discussed before and people usually talk about it as a hardware flaw, but I'd like to find a way to fix it in software (without disabling processor napping).

Looks nice but why does Apple insist on yet another GUI style that matches nothing else?

What I dont get is why anyone would rate this as a negative...

I did because I have yet to see any mention of USB fixes in all the notes we've seen. For two weeks, a clean install of Tiger crashed on my stock hardware about every other day. Each crash was in the USB driver. After 10.4.1 failed to fix it, I got fed up and went back to Panther. Current Panther uptime: 40 days, 14:29. The best Tiger ever did was 2 days, 23:32.

So I guess I'm feeling a bit negative about the money I blew on a non-operational piece of software when there's no indication that Apple has done anything to fix this problem (yes, I've sent in my kernel panic reports). I hope I'm wrong!

I really wish they'd just build the widget manager into the system preferences.

There are tons of system prefs you can download to manage widgets.

Personally speaking, I disagree. I use one of those widget manager in the sys preferences, and it is a hassle. You play with widgets, have to go over the to sys preferences, then back into dashboard. It's a nuisance.

I think Apple is doing it the right way. What is amazing is it didn't occur to Apple to put a widget manager in in the first place.

I agree. I like the idea of having the widget manager in the same place that I use the widgets. But then again, you can open up System Preferences to manage widgets and then just hit F12 (or whatever the hot key) to bring up the widgets to check.

Oh well... to each his own, I guess. :D
