Here's to a more stable Safari, to make it stop crashing every other time I visit and then close the tab to a site with shady CGI programming, and maybe a bit of tinkering into whatever makes iTunes 6 and 6.0.1 beach-ball excessively... :(

Other than that I'm actually quite happy with 10.4.2... ;)

I had similar problems. I booted from the 10.4 disk and used disk utilities. Problems fixed. You could also try reinstalling Safari as well.

Disable Quit on Safari

Oh, and also fix Safari so when I accidentally hit command-q (while using tabs) I get a prompt asking me if I want to close all tabs.

I agree that this would be nice (though it should also check for more than one *window* open, too).

You can completely disable the quit keyboard shortcut fairly simply if you're willing to hit the command line:

Once you disable the quit shortcut, you need to use the menu to quit Safari. But I never quit Safari nowadays anyway.

10.5 won't be coming out until late 2006, early 2007...we haven't even seen a demo of it...I'm sure Steve will do that at WWDC in June...so we have a while to wait.

Good. I just upgraded myself from 10.2 to 10.4. Panther came out a month and a half after I got my G4 and it didn't qualify for an upgrade at the time. Very pleased with Tiger.... but there are a few more beach balls... (not many). Can't wait for "more fixes". At 100 meg, that's a lot of replacing going on.

It would be nice if the release would tomorrow. That would make for a 3rd big and awesome Wednesday in October. One can dream.

Hopefully they speed up Javascript

With the Ajax craze, every link on every website seems to be a piece of JS these days. I have seen pages take nearly 10-30 seconds from click to movement.

I've gotta tell you, from my point of view, 99% of the AJAX I have seen out there is crap that makes my web experience worse, not better. I hope people get over this fad soon.

ah, yes....we should see 10.5 come out around Dec 2006-a good six months to a year before the problem-plagued, still-not-finished Vista/Longhorn comes out.
And by then it will be no contest. Or, they may rush it out to meet 10.5, and have the whole thing crash and burn right right before their eyes...
:D
10.4.3 is 100-110 mb? a Combo would then be around 150 mb...

Retail Version 10.4.3 (CD/DVD) ???

A couple of months ago, Apple put forth the thought of 10.4.2 being the new "out-of-the-box" retail version of Tiger. Do you think this 500-550 bug correction qualifies 10.4.3 for Apple Retail Store status as a direct off-the-shelf version?

What about pre-installing on all new computer purchases as of the release date? :) :D

Get .Mac working

Anyone else having problems with .Mac? I get frequent sync failings, random "your machine is not registered" messages, multiple copies of my calendar published, and a local iDisk that is not only dog slow in its own right, but slows down my entire finder and open/save dialogues in other apps, and regularly causes Office to hang. I've been very close to cancelling my membership for months, but I keep waiting for the next update to fix it. If 10.4.3 doesn't do it I'll probably kick it into touch

My iMac's finder implodes every day or so, making me restart Finder, and I have had 5+kernel panics across my iMac and PowerBooks. I can't wait.

This is not an issue with 10.4.2. Are you running any Norton software? If so, remove it. Otherwise, it could be a RAM issue, a FireWire device issue etc.

That's definitely the timeframe/rumor we've mostly been hearing, but doesn't that seem like a bad time of year to introduce a new product? Christmas is pretty distracting (i.e., people won't be interested in new computer products while they're planning to travel or are seeing their relatives), and to be in time to take advantage of Christmas sales, an early November release seems to be pushing it in terms of timeliness.

Just a thought I had recently.

Ever since the release of 10.4.2, DVD Player has decided to disable the "Play disc from last position" option and instead creates a system error, forcing me to play everything from the beginning

So yeah, I hope it fixes that.

Dude! You've got a stuffed DVD drive!

That's definitely a problem with the drive, I'd get it checked as soon as possible.

I think the guy is referring to a problem with some ATi Hardware and drivers no longer working with Apple enhancements. (8500?) The deal is that users DVD hardware and media work fine with the usual third party DVD software such as VLC media player.

Me neither, Safari usually quits by itself :p (the other times I Force Quit  )
I've been having the same troubles with both Firefox and Safari! Ever since the 10.4.2 update, both browsers just randomly quit themselves, on random pages including Google search results. The latest versions of Firefox haven't fixed it, and actually 1.0.6 made my Windows computer decide that the entire internet was invisible (it would load, but not render, pages).

I think web browsers have to fight an uphill battle against internet bloat. Between plugins for everything under the sun except drying your hair and ten million different web technologies and weird Flash and Javascript implementations, keeping up with everything is much too hard for small browser teams.

I hope they create some sort of protected memory space for each tab in the future, because when one website makes Safari bite it, none of the other tabs work, either, and with a non-responsive application, you can't even bookmark them.

And Q2DE would be really, really nice to have...at last! And maybe a fix for iTunes local playback without visualizations turning my PowerBook fan on all the time. It's probably related to the beachballing other people have mentioned.

I have got a couple question about these updates(meaning the 10.X.X <-- ones) do we ever see the introduction of new things i know this is extremely vague. I am not referring to like spotlight or dashboard but like what do you think the chances are we'll see things like the widget manager added to this?

I got to admit i am lacking in the knowledge of what goes into these updates but it seems like some of the stuff you all are mentioning that needs to be fixed would be simply changes in code that would fix certain bugs and what not, if this is the case what on earth could send this behemoth of an update over 100megs?

Finally I'm not scrapping the bottom of the barrel for free space on my HD but with an update of this size if it is replacing faulty components and software does it optimize by removing items it installs itself over, or is all of this +100med update going to be things installed on top what we saw with the Tiger .2 and .1?? Thanks in advance guys you are all such big help!

Edit: One suggestion I would like to throw out there is Apple please please please stop making dashboard such a damn memory hog when not in use, if it takes a milliecond longer to load when i press F12 then so be it, but i don't want 50 to 60 mbs of memory going to my weather and cnn.com widgets when i'm not even using them. For the poster that wants proof or a link PM and I'll give you my address so i can show you how these processes are slaving my ram even when i'm not using it!!!

Don't let the MS fanboys who hang out here read that. :)
To be fair, MS has said, come hell or highwater, they are going to release Vista by the 2006 Holiday Season.

I've read that the combo is ~100MB, if your system is up to date 10.4.3 will be much smaller in SU.

i'm hoping for a lot of changes that fix the minor irritating things that go on...but the one fix i hope they make is fast user switching. it worked flawlessly in panther...but in tiger it pauses for a few seconds before switching to the new account. very annoying.

"Few details of the specific improvements are available."

Yet we are being told of 550 fixes? Someone is lying.

What the post meant to say is that the details do not elaborate on the problems. They do list many many (haven't actually counted myself), specific fixes. "Fixed X problem with Y application, etc". But it's just a sentence, not a full detailed explanation of the problem. And sometimes it's just "Improvements to X" with nothing further. 550? Wouldn't be surprised, it's a long list. You're not being lied to. You just don't get a novel outlining the fixes.

Considering how many builds this update has gone through over the last couple months this thing better bring some massive stability and tweaking which from the looks of AI's article is the case.

Yes I have a Radeon 8500 Graphics card in my mac and since updating to tiger, my dvds don't play well. It reads rom and cds fine its just that the video playback is all distorted

Hurry up Apple I gotta make and blast an image down in the Lab. Have to put back the Garageband loops cause the previous administrator didn't like them, so he removed them. Also, I've updated everything else on one so I just need that huge update to reclone everything.
