A day in with the update and everything seems to be humming along okay. In fact I was getting really weird, almost buggy, behavior with Adobe CS apps, strange lags while switching between programs (Photoshop and Illustrator) and then even in iTunes... a lot of spinning beach balls for unexplainable reasons... gone!:D

However I'm not finding it more (as they say in these thar parts) "snappy," about the same as it was before the weird issues came up which is good enough for me.

PS And people were talking about there not being an option for opening a PDF in Safari in Preview but I still can.

I run a 12" PB with a 17" 2nd LCD display and I've been getting some funny behavior in DVD Player ever since the update. I play DVDs on the larger external display but the picture cuts out whenever anything other than the movie is displayed on the screen (e.g. I move the mouse and the controls appear; or I adjust the volume; etc.). The sound is still there but I just lose the picture until either the DVD controls or the volume level display fade away. I don't have this problem when the external display is not hooked up, but I also never had this problem with the external displayed connected under 10.4.2. It's a little confusing to me because I don't think DVD player was updated this go-around. I'm thinking that somehow the dual display functionality on my PB was messed around with when I updated the OS. Is anyone else having similar issues?

How hard can it be? Apple owns it's own hardware and should be able to check these killer updates.

Apple owns the ORIGINAL hardware, but if you put hard drives in there that aren't S.M.A.R.T. (to the system) and/or weren't on Apple's radar... which there are, MANY, I know, I recently bought one and was overwhelmed... that can cause an issue with the hard drive. It did for me, I bought a Hitachi and had all types of weird issues with it, not to mention it could never be verified as "S.M.A.R.T. status. Finally sent it back and got a Seagate which was verified and everything works fine EXCEPT when I go to that drive there's a bizarre pause, like it takes a second if you open it or a folder within the new hard drive where I'm giving a blank window and maybe even a beach ball for a split second before info appears. However I can live with it considering it's not my boot drive, it's 500 GB and cost me under $250.

Unexplained crashes

After I installed the last update, a few applications have started crashing. DVD Studio Pro crashes as I try to burn a DVD. VLC crashes 3 seconds after I open it. iDVD crashes when I try to burn a DVD. Safari and other applications crash more frequently than they did before (they hardly ever did).

Have you tried reinstalling those programs?

I didn't find mention of this in a quick search of this thread, so at the risk of repeating something already mentioned...

Under Mac OS X 10.4.3, Mail.app once again allows tab characters in the body of messages, a feature that once worked but was lost in a previous Mac OS X update (pressing TAB got you spaces instead).

Tab support is back and I'm very pleased about that!

Is anyone else having this issue? It has started with 10.4.3 and I submitted it to apple as a bug report:

Home config: 1GHz PowerBook G4, Tiger 10.4.3, Airport Extreme base station. Connectivity is via wireless.

Work config: as above.

I use my powerbook on the wireless network at home, then bring it to work which has both a wireless network and wired ethernet. When I wake my computer from sleep at work, it cannot use any internet services. Mail, browsers, etc do not connect even though a new wireless network is detected and connected to. Similarly, I prefer to use wired ethernet at work for better speed, yet when I plug in the ethernet cable, no internet apps find the connection even though it exists. In the past (before 10.4.3 actually) I could plug in the ethernet at work and optionally turn off my airport and everything would work smoothly. Now I am required to log out of my computer and log back in.

On some Macs, the Character Palette is popping up at every password dialog. Including this one
Never heard/encountered of such a bug!
I have had no troubles with 10.4 since I started using it since the original GM release.

It was included in the official release documents Apple provide :)

Dock Freezing, Mail Sluggish?

Mail smart folders are sluggish ('course my inbox has 20,000 msgs) and the Dock is freezing A LOT on my friend's (a very recent switcher) Rev. B Mac mini.

I'm submitting feedback. Otherwise, this seems to have cleared up everything else. That is, except for me having to completely re-index Spotlight. At first 10.4.3 fixed it, then it was worse.

That's wonderful news, but I don't think you would like me flying over there every morning and using your Mac all day :)

Trashing some prefs for the keyboard and char palette, then rebooting, got the affected machines unstuck, after carrying out that procedure twice.

Same issue on my 12" PB (1GHz, 768MB) with a 20" LCD display. Only way to get a DVD to play on the external display is to use mirroring. I've tried a couple of other things like dropping the colour from millions to thousands - doesn't help. Never had an issue in 10.4.2 so moving to 10.4.3 seems to have caused this.

One word... CHIRPING! When are they going to finally fix that issue with Dual Processor PowerMac G5s and Tiger. I have a dual 1.8 and I don't get ANY strange sounds in Panther but it makes aweful chirping sounds in Tiger even with 10.4.3... boo to that!

My iTunes has started randomly turning on now...Is Apple invading my computer?

Do you have any iTunes-using Widgets besides the iTunes one? Mine was doing that and I turned off an Alarm I had, and so far, it's been good.

'Course, I was having all sorts of other problems as well, so I reinstalled via that Combo update and it seems to have resolved some issues, but not the Mail Smart Folder/Spotlight one.:(

This may be a coincidence in regard to the update, but since I installed the update, I have been having problems with the trackpad on my PB 12" G4. It is intermittently slow, unresponsive, and will not go in a straight line. Sometimes using expose fixes the problem for some reason, other times I just have to wait it out. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happen, and if so, how I could fix it?

hey
i get a beachball on the menubar at the spot where the clock, spotlight and volume should be. none of them load

the sys pref keeps unchecking the "display" item

the only mod i did to the previous install was to disable the spotlight. i think i trashed it or something

??
