PDF's in Safari 2.0.2

With 2.0.1 when viewing a PDF file you could either "Open with Preview" (in the menu) or right click (with a Mighty Mouse) and save to disk. Both these options have gone - there is no Open with Preview in the menu, and clicking (right or left) simply gives a cursor. I can see no way of downloading a PDF to my disk, which is VERY annoying - as a scientist I spend an important part of my day looking at articles in PDF format and then downloading them. Now I can't! Grrrr

PS Everything else about 10.4.3 is fine - ignore the moans above.

I'd noticed that things seem to have changed when viewing PDF files, too, but I couldn't put my finger on what. However, I can ctrl-click in the the browser window to open in preview or do File | Save As, which will save it as a PDF file.

Just installed the 10.4.3 and no problems so far. Started the download and went to pick up my car at the shop getting a tire patched, my wife drove me. Told my eldest son that if my younger son came back to stay off the computer. Darn, should have been more specific and said anyone. Came back from picking up my car and visiting the grocery store. Dang, if my wife hadn't hit the restart! Ok, I'm a bit anal but I wanted to reboot to see if anything strange happened. Course my wife didn't see any problem, afterall the screen said to click on restart. Arrrrrrggggggggh. (Deep breath. Now a deep cleansing breath. Ahhhhhh). Anyway, things seem a bit snappier. Guess I could be imagining that's it's faster but isn't newer always bigger, better and faster? (There are exceptions of course, Daytona Ferrari for one :D ) Keeping my fingers crossed that I don't run into any problems. Cheers

I had a huge problem when I first installed Tiger. I'm talking HUUUGGGGEEEE. My scanner wouldn't (and still doesnt work). My printer wasn't recognized, and I RE-INSTALLED TIGER THREE TIMES, the first an upgrade, the other two fresh-installs.

It was slow to start, etc etc...And I still had printing problems because Tiger wouldn't recognize my printers drivers.

At least the printer works now...thes scanner just cuts up all my images when i pop them into Photoshop (im using an HP Scanjet 4600 and printer: HP PhotoSmart 7550).

Another problem? I don't know if this is isolated, but on my Titanium PowerBook G4...the minimized dock icons of any window are completely blurry and pixelated. Does anyone else have this problem? I've upgraded Tiger everytime an update comes but I'm hesistant to do it again unless it actually does something.

Also, is there any actual way to turn dashboard off or when its not "on screen" is it off?

Appreciate the help!

For those of you experiencing the loss of minimize and the yellow button being replace by a grey one: Do you by any chance run a pirated Front Row?

no for me although i have that random problem.

Upgraded to 10.4.3 - working great

I got my system updated to 10.4.3 server finally. Didn't have any problems with it, but the download size was 122 MB. I've heard 58 and 9X before.

Anyway, can't complain. System feels really responsive.

yeah so far so good with the update on my 'book.. its been a few days already and i have to experience any slow downs.. or speed ups for that matter.

UPDATE safari is faster, i guess my internet connection was screwed up. Way to go SAFARI! I installed Camino and was wow like this is fast, and i used safari agian and im like wow this is fast. So safari is faster, i guess my internet connection was screwing up at first or something

OLDER first experience
Okay so I installed the standalone updater and safari is unbearably slow now. It feels like dialup. I have a brand new 15" PB only a week old and the only software i installed is Iworks. I reset safari before and after the update and rebooted a couple of times. I was hoping that safari would be better so that i could use it. Now i have to install a third party broswer, probaby camino.... oh well. I really wanted to like and use safari.

I've used it now for two days and I must say I am very pleased with this update... The system feels more reliable, no more bizarre and annoying hick-ups (not that 10.4.2 was a nightmare, but I restarted every 2-3 days because something bizarre would happen), and perhaps a little bit faster in the spotlight department (nothing spectacular, though).

The only annoying thing which remains is that when you plug in several audio outputs on a laptop the OS gets a bit confused after a while. For example, after having plugged in and unplugging my emi 2/6, mail.app does not play sounds anymore. Perhaps we are spoiled, because I remember having to restart every time you plugged or unplugged a printer :)

has anyone found any problems with folders "closing" or deselecting after using the spring loaded function?

When I drag files and folders into other folders with spring load, the folder doesn't "close" or snap back when the file is released.

10.4.3

I had the same issue on both my Albook and Tibook, repair permissions would keep giving me those same things each time I ran it. Booting from the Tiger disk and repairing permissions from there fixed them for good.

Look, please understand, these are NOT ERRORS you are seeing - they are for information - they are telling you that instead of what should be normal permissions (in a UNIX based system) for these folders and files, Apple have (for security reasons) changed the permissions (eg made Widgets only installable by you, not a malicious third party as they could have been in 10.4.0). The Disk Utility with 10.4.3 is the latest version and will report these permissions, booting from the original Tiger startup disk (10.4.0) does not contain these changed permissions so they are not reported. Nothing is 'fixed' by booting from the earlier disk.
This thread about all these 'permissions' shows a lack of understanding about what is going on - read what the messages say in Disk Utility (they all begin with 'We are using....')

I dont have time to read 833 posts but this update has screwed up my system pretty good...

whenever it goes to sleep now we lose our internet connecttion (even though it reads as connected) DSL and the only way to get it back is a restart.
This happened immediatley after updating...
any idea?

i have a powerbook 15 the one before the new models recently and installed the update without a second thought...i wish i had thought twice. But having never had a bad experience since switching to apple last march i never thought id feel uneasy about by powerbook.

after the upgrade everything was sweet. but later that night it froze when powering down.... so i held the power button down for 4 secs. I restarted to make sure everything was fine.. it wasnt!!!!! mail.app was messed up, all key chains where deleted and playing up all the time with pop ups.. and various preferences were lost...

its taken me a day to restore everything and get it stable.... it sort of happened again earlier today with my keychains disappearing but luckily i restored from .mac backup.

since then its been ok... fingers crossed nothing else happens otherwise ill have to spend a day doing a fresh install! :(

I love it so far. The graphics seem smoother like they were in Panther, something I've been missing. They must have also fixed problems with Quartz Extreme, I don't have CoreImage support. This version is smooth as glass. Awesome.

I also have some problems:

My powerbook has battery times under one hour. That is a 50% drop since 10.42. (yes: Have calibrated the battery)

My powermac: Have issues with automount/finder and sleeping disks. Since I have 4 disks inside my G5, i want to spin down disks that I don't use. Before 10.43, there were no issues with this. Now, the disks don't want to spin up, and finder hangs. Just reboot the computer ala Bill.

:(
How hard can it be? Apple owns it's own hardware and should be able to check these killer updates.

I think the update was a good one. It was a rough start, but ever since then... it's been very smooth. Fast, too.

:D

Nope. Repair permissions? Hmmm.. idk man.

EDIT: 1,000th post :D

So does anyone know if apple is going to release a fix for this p.o.c. anytime soon?

My fans are going crazy and it has nothing to do with my looks.

YOJ

I panicked this morning, I went to use my bluetooth mouse and the BT icon was greyed out, saying "Bluetooth Not Available". I promptly restarted and my desktop was like it had been a few days ago, certain programs not in the dock and the wallpaper outdated...so wierd. Also my dock has been freezing a lot, the only way to make it go away is pressing option+apple+escape. I don't have to close anything, but bringing up the force quit dialog box makes the computer normal again. This along with the tremendously short battery life I've been getting is making me wish I had held onto my rev.D powerbook (previous model). I'm going to go in to see a MacGenius this weekend.
