10.4.2

I've had flawless Tiger operation. The only things I "feel" negatively about is some major slow downs in one account on my wife's iBook but I think that has something to do with software or a preference somewhere.

Perhaps it is just that I'm used to a Dual G5 PM and the ol' G4 PB really is just flat slower.

I do, as always, look forward to any update that Apple puts out though.

I have to agree, Tiger has been a joy for me. i never had a single problem with anything, other than a hic up with the latest garageband update. Safari has never crashed, mail is great, automator and spotlight are as smooth as silk. I feel bad for all the users who have had a bad experience with 10.4, but I for one have enjoyed every second of it. Stealth mode rocks, automator really really rocks, and spotlight has changed how I use my computer.

Sorry, but I guess someone had to have a good experience with Tiger. :p

Perhaps you were lucky enough to not use automator with 10.4.0 where it was so slow as to be unusable. Luckily, that was fixed with 10.4.2. Safari WILL crash when you visit certain websites, it's completely repeatable and I've told Apple about it numerous times. Mail was also very problematic and COULD crash when quit under 10.4.0. Luckily, that was fixed with 10.4.1. You can look at Apple's discussion forum and others have had these same problems.

Some problems still remain to be fixed, like isolated problems with Mail, Automator's standalone applications and finder plugins not working and Safari crashing. Try going to search.earthlink.net and typing in the search box. I'm using and have always been using a fresh install of Tiger without any system or application altering software.

Will this be the one??? We're still using 10.4.0 because 10.4.2 sounded like it had so many problems. 10.4.1 we missed and I haven't tried getting it since 10.4.0 seems stable. So... late September maybe - after it is fully tested on bleeding edge types who like to give blood. :)

Wow! Another update soooo soon? Tiger is buggy.
Being sarcastic... or maybe a short memory? Look up the regularity of updates in Panther. Then Jaguar. Then report back. Or maybe you are saying OS X has always been buggy?

I like the regular updates. Keeps things on the move. We could be like XP. Wait for YEARS between updates. And watch the OS get further and further behind.

No thanks. And yes. Tiger is working great for me on 3 different Macs. And one was purchased in '99.

Now just a little closer to allowing this big pussycat into my computer. :D

Tiger for me has been OK....

BUT!!!

They really really really need to fix the superdrive problems...

Where I can't read CD-R disks or burn certain types of manufactures' disks.

I can burn Apple DVD-R's...almost all others do not work for me

The Superdrive that came with the Dual 2.5 (at home) was the SONY DVD RW DW-U21A.

That drive is where I'm having problems, since installing tiger.

I have a dual 1.8 at work with the Pioneer superdrive and I have better luck burning from there...

It's almost a MAJOR point for me to go back to 10.3.9...Which just plainly sucks!!!

I love tiger...now I'm not sure what the fark I'm going to do...

Cheers

Wow
I can't believe all the trouble people are having with Tiger here.
Tiger has been rock solid " sans the iPhoto bug " on 3 setup's.
Maybe some of you should do a complete fresh install after formating the hard drive.
If I had that many problems that's what I'd be doing.
I know clean installs are obviously less prone to bugs, but I've done regular upgrades form 10.2 to 10.3 and to 10.4. I haven't ever done a clean install on my PB and I'm not having any problems to speak of. So that can't be the cause of all the problems :D

What was supposed to happen? It works fine for me.

Cool. Nice to see that apple isn't spending all their time on iPods

Do people honestly think Apple uses the same developers on MacOS X as on the iPods?

its a more of a psychological thing... like when you clean you glasses lenses you think you see better when in fact your prescription is the same..

Just happy to see Apple busy taking care of its customers. This will allow Tiger to become more stable. Hope that this will finish up the majority of the current bug list. This will be something to look forward to prior t Apple Expo Paris.

I hope they give them time to recover, first. I'm surprised they're not dead.
(I just heard they lost all their HP.)

Maybe they can fix the bug that only lets mail load parts of an email.
A partial workaround (doesn't work on every affected message) for that one: show full headers

so far i haven't had any "bugs" with tiger, if you told me that was it, i would be perfectly happy

I guess I've been lucky that I don't have any problems with 10.4. It is my first Mac OS and I am so in love with it.

My only gripe: Safari sucks. But, luckily, Firefox is available. :)

I seem to recall that OS 9 and before usually had no more than 2 patches each.
Now each release of OS X has 10 of them (or more) if you count the 'security updates') ie 10.3.9 + 5 security updates.
Apple-you dropped the ball on the rollout of Panther, and now Tiger.
You had better get it together if you want to wipe Longhorn...er, Virus-ta™ off the map.

Its not very pleasant when you work to convince a friend or colleague to jump to the Mac, only to have to then explain away why it is so buggy.

Saying 'Well, Windows is buggy, too' is not the kind of excuse you want to make when someone begins to wonder about the wisdom of making the switch, or to doubt your judgement...

And I find it halarious that people rationalize this by saying "Wow! APPLE is really taking care of business!"

If APPLE were REALLY on the ball, you wouldnt NEED to be seeing more than an update or two per OS increment.

Saying that 'Windows is no better' is a cop-out.
Mac is supposed to be far superior to Windows, not simply just 'as good as' in terms of stability, security and reliability.

My friends with PCs have made it a point to embarass me about OSX being so unstable with so many updates/bug fixes, and the "Macs just work" thing.

With so much more control over the hardware configurations on a Mac, " why the [expletive deleted] are we having all these problems??? Can't Apple test the OS on the standard setups to save us all the hassle? Thats why I switched. My XP machine was definately more stable, I never had to do a clean install like I do now.

I'm beginning to think we will never have a bug free OS in our lifetimes.

Correct, we won't. It's impossible for any large software product to be bug free. That said, I have no idea why your system so unstable, and Windows has just as many updates, if not more, coming through Windows Update as the Mac does (many of which require reboots).

I've got a Dual G5 and a 12" PB (and soon 12" iBook for my wife), and they have all been stable machines. At 10.4.0 I experienced 2 lock ups of my PB, but since 10.4.2 its been humming away nicely.

My Dell Laptop at work on the other hand that has Windows XP on it only wakes up from "Sleep" mode about 50% of the time, so gets reboot at least twice a week.

After applying the 10.4.2 combo update, my superdrive now works how it was inteneded. I can use any media type from any manufacture. WOOT!

I've only had to reboot once. And it worked again. I would have to say after 10 years using Macs...This was the first major problem I had with any Mac OS!!

Besides that part, Tiger has been rock solid...

Cheers!!!

IMHO the average at home Tiger user doesn't really have any problems. At least judging from my wife's experience and other posters.

Just because you believe 'average' users don't have any problems, doesn't mean they won't, or don't ... it's just they may have not presented themselve, but they're there.

The fact that Apple recognises they do have problems by releasing bug fixes, means that ALL users of X have problems, that Apple advises be fixed...

BTW ... not trying to be cute, but I didn't realise that f asterick asterick k (as one four letter word) was an attempt to circumvent the profanity filter, just trying to respect people, as well as vent frustration ... it's used widely ... would fock, as in the fockers, (f oh cee k) be banned, also?

you may try to take the driver froom panther and replace the Tiger one with them. look inside /System/library/extension it's probably there some where. Get the system info to have more detail to pick the right driver.

Keep a copy of the Tiger one just in case!

I'm still using Panther and think that it's a very stable OS. No complaints here.
