Does anyone realise that these rumours are predicting the release of OS X on April Fools? Smells a bit fishy to me... Unless Apple has some sort of joke on it's site about it being April Fools. :D
Apple has to be careful with playing jokes, and most likely wouldn't do that.

Its not that they don't have a sense of humor. More that releasing info on products early or as a joke can affect the stock price, and the SEC takes a *really* dim view of that...

Why does everybody equate the April 1 date with an April fools joke? Do they all forget that Apple was founded on April 1, 1976?

April 1

The only problem with April 1 is that it's the company's birthday. So they're driving a release date around cuteness and emotion, rather than when engineering says it's ready.

Cool!

Can't wait to get my new PB with Tiger pre-installed. Yay! So happey. :D

On the other hand, AppleInsider says that there are still two outstanding issues:
So far there is no indication that Tiger build 8A425 will become gold master, but it's close. The build carries only two outstanding glitches, according to reports. These pertain to nVidia GeForce graphic cards and the compatibility of the Japanese character set in Carbon applications.

So maybe there'll still be another build or two before final.

And if Apple doesn't get the nVidia graphics card issue fixed, maybe I should opt for the 15" PB instead of the 12" one. That's a good excuse to get a nicer machine.

Related to the talk on speed, has anybody tried Tiger on a G3 iBook?

i ran an early copy on my g3 ibook (600MHz) and when i went back to panther i really noticed the speed hit.

Fo sho...

Now that's one heck of a baseless claim.

Ready is as ready does

What makes you think it isn't ready? Perhaps it's been ready and they are just sweeting the deal. Or, maybe they just rock and can complete software on schedule. ::looks at Microsoft:: It seems to me that Apple has bumped planned releases of products due to unforseen circumstances, so there is no reason to believe they won't do it again. I think they are just on target. Tony says they're great! :)

Sorry if i'm being obtuse Hector but do you mean that your iBook was slower on Panther or Tiger? I'm guessing that you mean Tiger was quicker?

Funny, when I installed Tiger (WWDC) on my machine (iBook 500MHz, 640MB RAM), I felt a huge speed increase. Though, I might have just been imagining it.

speed hit = less speed, also when i had it on halo became playable (18-22fps).

if i dident know the gold master of tiger was so close i would put a more recent beta on my ibook.

Greta stuff :) Cheers for that Hector. I can't wait to get it on my iBook and iMac.

Try the decaf you over zealous Mac techies. Concentrate on living your life instead of speculating about a software programs release date. Software does not improve your life. Besides...... Tiger won't be released this Friday. Not gonna happen and shouldn't really matter if it did.
:)
Actually, nobody said it would be released on Friday; the rumor is that it will be announced on Friday, with a ship date later in April.

And if an OS release shouldn't be worthy of our time, why are you posting here? Surely making this point to us is also a waste of your time, no?

Edit: Seems the original post was pulled - fast!

I'm hoping when I finally buy my PB right after Tiger launches, it won't be pre-installed. I'd rather have Panther pre-installed and have a Tiger CD be included --- much like when iLife '05 was released, it was bundled with new hardware, which had iLife '04 pre-installed.

This way, in case Tiger exhibits some unbearable bugginess, I'll still have Panther to fall back on (via the Restore CDs) until Tiger is patched up.

wow, having a product in stores (a few days before apr 15, so they can stock) 2 weeks or so after the gold master is done? that's really taking a HUGE wager on their suppliers. that would mean that they would have to have the CDs pressed and manufactured and to the stores in under 2 weeks. wow. don't be surprised if it's not april 15th, but it could happen.

Based on video games and so on 2 weeks seems to actually be a pretty standard number.

They probably already have all the boxes and printed material ready to go. Just waiting for the GM to start pressing those dvd's.

I'll be upgrading when 10.4.1 is released, so the Tiger doesn't have me by the tail.

I would think they have the boxes and other materials printed already no? Just unfolded and such. The discs will just need burning and stomping or whatnot?

I'm really excited for Tiger, if not anything else, I just love the feeling of something new, be it a piercing, tattoo, hair style, or color of eyeshadow. Heh. You now know a fair amount about me. Blah. Yeah, TIGER! :D
