so if its announced on april 1st, will their be a keynote of sorts for us mac heads to go crazy about lol

Just to clarify, what I said wasn't questioning whether or not Apple would release it on April Fools day. What I was questioning was the rumour that it will be released on a day widely known as a Fools day. It would be appropriate to make a rumour that a product would be released on a day associated with fools. When the day came and [if] Apple doesnt release Tiger, then people would realise they were fooled by the rumour!

No way I can imagine Apple making a fake announcement of a new release of OS X.

The only problem with April 1 is that it's the company's birthday. So they're driving a release date around cuteness and emotion, rather than when engineering says it's ready.

Product releases are rarely based on what engineering says, most of the times its based on what marketing says.

Who thinks Apple would not relase Tiger on April 1 have to "Think Different" Now! :p

I doubt it. For Panther they just put a countdown clock on apple.com

That works just fine for me, it doesn't have to be formal. I really enjoy the use of the countdown clock. Hope that they will use Tiger in the design.

I am very anxious for Tiger. I've already preordered from Amazon with next day shipping, and I will also preorder from Apple.com, when they offer it. I want to make sure I have whichever way is faster covered! :)

If you live near an Apple Store, there is even a quicker way. Chances are there will be a release party with the opportunity to purchase Tiger.

They probably already have all the boxes and printed material ready to go. Just waiting for the GM to start pressing those dvd's.

You mean CD's surely?

There are still quite a few useful macs around with no DVD ROM.

I cant remeber where I read it, but I heard that Tiger was coming on 6CD's or 1DVD something like that.

If true, this means that we are in for a hefty Tiger update.

Whether or not it's a joke is irrelevant. It's going to get announced whether people think it's a joke or not.

DVD option?

TMA said:
I think they'll have just one option - 3 CD's. Plain install needing just the 2.

One hopes that they, in their infinite wisdom, will include a DVD for install, too. It makes no sense to me to (as has been discussed elsewhere with regard to the previews) distribute a single disc image to developers that needs to be burnt to DVD prior to installation, then distribute only CDs for the final product, especially when other products--say, iLife--have a DVD option already and a DVD greatly simplifies the work of anyone who has to install multiple times, such as if you buy the Family Pack and have three or four Macs in your house.

I'll install it on my PB17 as soon as humanly possible. I'm looking forward to it. Surprisingly, none of the major new features are amazingly appealing to me:

Spotlight: Quicksilver's ability to call up applications, and iTunes tracks, just might win over Spotlight's ability to look inside files.

Dashboard: Konfabulator, Dashboard... it's all the same... Might be nice not to have so many widgets taking up 5 megs a piece of vram.

Safari RSS: As long as it doesn't pause or beachball when rendering a large page or forum chatthread. RSS? Ehh... Firefox has it - not sure i'd use it much.

Mail: Will it use up gigabytes of virtual memory, if left open all night, asking for a password?

iChat AV: No one I know has any "V", and we rarely chat "A". But, i'd love to use it more, particularly with that iChat AV girl.

Automator: The things I need to automate are surely more complicated than what Automator will come with. Could be useful for a lot of people though.

VoiceOver: Is it significantly better than on the Quadra 800 AV, or are we still at "Computer, what time is it? Computer. What. Time. Is. It."

Parental Controls: I don't need to control my parents. They're pretty autonomous these days.

.Mac Sync: I don't have .Mac.

QT7: I'm very curious to watch this codec in action, but I suspect it won't do much for all my past volumes of video.

So, assuming that Apple announces Tiger on Friday but will not be releasing the new OS until mid/late April, if someone were to order a new machine after they announce the new software, will it be included in their purchase? Or is it only after the actual release of the product?

You're quite right. Astonishingly, multi-billion dollar, publicly-listed companies don't tend to make fake product releases.
