Who would rate this Negative?

A person who gets the Developer Releases and finds that Tiger is still way too buggy for release ( they probably don't get the bleeding edge releases though)

Announcing products on a Friday would be out of the ordinary for Apple or any other company. Apple likes to hold their events early on in the week so that the press can report and momentize during the week. If you release a product on Friday the wow factor wanes over the weekend and not many news sources catch on Monday.

Might be wrong on this be seem to remember 10.3 was released on a Friday.

Yes, Panther was released on the 24th of October 2003 (which was on a Friday).

I'm waiting to see if the eMac's, iMacs and iBooks are to be revised any date after this Friday. Also if it's announced this week, I expect that new versions Apple pro apps will ship soon (rumored to need Tiger), and Adobe Creative Suite 2 be announced a couple of days later as well.

Nearly EVERYTHING needs updating lol.....and I really can't believe that Apple have let the eMac go an entire year with out any update

may be all the LITTLE things not worth mentioning at Apple.com. Things most of us have never heard about.

That was true of Jaguar and Panther for sure. The big things like Spotlight and Dashboard and Automator are worth my $95, but I'm looking forward to lots of little annoyances disappearing--even ones I've never thought about--and lots of little thoughtful touches added. Things to discover in the weeks ahead.

Any one of those little improvements is a yawn. All together they may make my daily computing a LOT nicer. We'll see if Tiger lives up to Panther in that regard.

I agree with you on the matter of making daily computing better, I still didn't feel that panther was as fast as windows xp, when I came back to my mac after using windows I did get annoyed for a while, I hope we get a bit more speed.

Who are you? Rainman?

"Yes. Definitely. Definitely a Friday. Panther was definitely released October 24, 2003. Oh... oh. People's Court starts in exactly 8 minutes and 32 seconds... 31... 30... 29..."

10.4.1

At the risk of being a beggar and a chooser at the same time, does anybody remember when the 10.x.1 releases came out? I told my fiance that I would try to wait until the 10.4.1 release before getting Tiger. In the mean time, I will look longingly over the shoulders of my roommates (with three of us, the family pack is not much a savings).

I hate being fiscally responsible.

I was posting all the new features that Tiger will have on a primarily windows based forum and they went made, claiming that H264 is going to be a 'waste of time' and 'useless'. hah.

none of them could handle Spotlight either.

most of them were teens though, its a game makers forum. you'd think they'd be smart

Tiger Upgrade

Would that be possible to upgrade from mac os x 10.3 to 10.4 ? because I'm new to mac World ... and I the most simple, the better.

Yes it is a piece of cake!

You have 3 options:

1) Update
2) Archive Install (preserve all but system files)
3) Erase HD

Update is the default!

The only configuration option is to install X11 to run that UI

I assume that these were already on the Apple site, but I never noticed them before:

http://www.apple.com/pro/filmvideo/tiger.html

http://www.apple.com/pro/design/tiger.html

http://www.apple.com/business/tiger.html

http://www.apple.com/science/tiger.html

http://www.apple.com/pro/musicaudio/tiger.html

http://www.apple.com/pro/photo/tiger.html

They lack any reference to being "released first half of 2005." Also, here's a webcast on Tiger in science applications:

If these are new, looks like Apriil 1 may be the day!!!!! :D

Good catch! I don't think those sites have been online for more than a few days. I was browsing the pro section about ten days ago, I'm pretty sure there was no reference to Tiger back then. Also the fact that there is no indication that Tiger has not been released yet seems to be a clear sign that those pages are quite new and that Tiger will in fact be released soon.

I guess you didn't read the post in this thread yesterday on this subject:

10.3.0 came out on Oct. 24th, 2003
10.3.1 came out on Nov. 7th, 2003
10.3.2 came out on Dec. 8th, 2003

Great find!-I also now would believe Tiger will be released very soon.

They won't actually put 10.4.1 on the CD anyway--buy now or buy later, you'll get the same CD--and then you'll download the 10.4.1 update. Buying early and not installing until 10.4.1 doesn't hurt anything, if you have the cash now.

It's completely believable, because they have done the same thing with the Power Mac G5. If Tiger is the reason, then there will be a flood of updates within the next three months.

I want to attend the Tiger release party. So I will probably do the same. Will purchase Tiger and then monitor comments about Tiger here before installation. If I have to wait almost two weeks, that will be fine with me.

Sounds like a good strategy. For what it's worth, I've found that one of the best places to read about early adopter problems and pitfalls is Macintouch. Undoubtedly they'll have an ongoing Tiger report as soon as it's out.

i did the preorder with amazon to get the lower price on tiger, and i want to have it asap anyway. i'll put it on my old powerbook to play around with it and eventually move it to the dual g5. however, amazon as of today shows this for the shipping date on tiger...

Items not yet shipped:
Delivery estimate: June 2, 2005 - June 4, 2005

1 of: Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger

so i don't know if that's a safe guess or a clue, but that's what my order info says today.

I hear that Erase HD and start again is best option for minimal bugs and best speed... If that true?

Whats Archive Install? How does it differ from Update?

Archive Install will save your old system to a seperate folder and install a fresh copy of the OS. It preserves User folders and network settings. Installs outside User folders will have to be reinstalled. You can then copy settings from the old system to the new system.

This is a good feature if you have to revert to an older update. I installed 10.3.8 and one of my fans started making a grinding noise. I did an Archive Install and then applied all updates up to 10.3.7.
