Well, if I'm wrong (above), then the Tiger seed to developers around the *announcement* date should the GM release. The 7B85 seed of Panther ended up being the GM; it was seeded about 2 weeks before the public release party.

This may not be a joke!

Don't forget that Amazon originally said that Tiger would be released on March 31. The 31st is on a Thursday and this is a Friday, not a lot of difference.

Unless Steve gets mad, I think this might be spot on. If they announce it on the 1st and release it at the NAB it would make Apple the star of the show.

I've been waiting to buy a new PowerBook until Tiger comes out. It looks like my wait might be over.

Not Really. Correct me if i'm wrong but I remember that the Panther Release Party was on a Friday Night @ 8pm...

Yes, Panther was released on a Friday night (till midnight). I remember I was going to take advantage of the 10% discount and buy a powerbook. So if you're waiting to buy a new G5, this is one more reason to hope that a new rev happens before the release of Tiger.

I am just curious about something. I am going to assume that everyone here is using Panther yes? Panther is indeed a GREAT OS. But apparrently it isn't good enough? Why can you over anxious Mac users not be satisfied with Panther? What does Panther not do? If you are not satisfied with Panther maybe you should write your own OS? This way you can be totally satisfied and not have to speculate about what Apple is going to do. :)

As much as TS seems to get these things right, I'm just not buying it. I think maybe Apple is feeding TS some misinformation.
This seems like a good theory. After all, isn't TS getting spanked by Apple in the courts?

Then again, it fits in perfectly with the Final Cut 5 release at NAB rumors. FCP 5 needs Tiger to run, so people could be buying a nice bundle in Vegas in a few short weeks.

Oh yes, I'm hungry for more features, so I'll just write my own OS

I'm happy, but, as always, want more. That's how the world works you know.

Think Secret

Boy, Think Secret really do want to incur the full wrath of Apple's legal dept. don't they?

First, it was "Asteroid", now it's the release date of Tiger. Not that I mind though.

Free Update?

I have been waiting forever (or so it seems) to make the "switch" and buy my first mac. I plan on getting the 15" powerbook. The only thing I have been waiting for was either Tiger to be release or the G5 model to come out, whichever came first. I was told by an employee in the Apple store, that the last time when Panther was released, free upgrades were given to everyone who purchased a computer or the old OS within the previous 30 days? I know this topic has already been brought up, but I wanted to see if there was anymore information? I want to buy my new "toy" ASAP, but also don't want to have to pay for a Tiger upgade. Does anyone know whether or not Apple normally provides these free upgrades? Thanks.

So soon? I don't believe it.

But I want to.

Then again, even if it is true, we won't know what to BELIEVE about the announcement... so many reports will be doctored up with April 1 "Tiger has Virtual PC built-in" and similar nonsense :)

I have always considered April as the release date for Tiger, it's just been a hunch of mine. It would also tie in quite nicely with that slip up from Amazon.com where they posted the original pre-order date for March 31st which was then changed to April and then again to June after Rumour sites caught wind of it.
The Missing Manual, Tiger Edition is still said to be released April 1th...

Edit: So is the O'Reilley book Learning Unix For Mac Os X Tiger...

Hmmm... there might be something here... :D

Yes. BUT, I'd still wait until Tiger is out if you can. Two reasons:

1. The free upgrade costs something like $19 shipping, and you have to do the labor of installing it.

2. It's reported (AppleInsider.com) that Apple is currently resolving problems with some of the new scrolling trackpads (15" and 12" supposedly). A little delay could improve your odds of a good one!

(3. For people looking at 256 MB Macs: some rumors say 512 will be the new standard alongside Tiger.)

I would be very impressed if it was out in min April, it seems that the software is still early in development, but maybe its farther along than it looks. Maybe apple is spreading false information to confuse us rumor mongers.

Quite a flurry of rumors. I've been hearing that G5s, especially the dual proc. systems, should get a real speed boost with Tiger. I can only imagine what this combination of quad-powered G5s and Tiger will do for pro apps. So Apple is finally paying some attention to the pro users for a change.

Tiger on the Horizon

Imagine, an OS premiering BEFORE a given
release date, not to mention, WITHIN
the given time-frame............

This is fabulous news!

Part of me hopes this is true.. and as pointed out above, it fits in with various book releases and NAB

As far as WWDC goes, I guess we'll have even more speculation as to what mysterious goodies we're getting if Tiger's already out.

I do wonder though if Apple have given different dates to different groups of people to see what's published on Thinksecret and narrow down the search for their mole...

Hey, wait a second... Isn't April 1st is Apple's birthday? If so, the Tiger rumor makes more sense now. Lemme look up Apple's bday...

CONFIRMED: Apple's birthday is April 1, 1976. Apple will be 29... wow...

I've actually written my own (toy) operating system, and that REALLY gave me some appreciation for what it takes to create a real one. I'm looking forward to Tiger, but I think Mac OS X is already a fantastic operating system, thanks to Apple's development team. Before OS X, my goal was to find an operating system that didn't annoy me and to use it without incident. With OS X, it's a pleasure to use the operating system.
