I am just curious about something. I am going to assume that everyone here is using Panther yes? Panther is indeed a GREAT OS. But apparrently it isn't good enough? Why can you over anxious Mac users not be satisfied with Panther? What does Panther not do? If you are not satisfied with Panther maybe you should write your own OS? This way you can be totally satisfied and not have to speculate about what Apple is going to do. :)

Panther was absolutely good enough until Apple announced new things for Tiger.

Spotlight, alone, will change the way we use computers.

Personally I don't think it is a big deal.

I for one have been using Tiger ever since its first seed release and have tried all of the seeds. So far I haven't found spotlight to be very useful. I certainly don't find it any more useful than Launch Bar which I have also used for about 2 years now.

I would guess that I probably don't use spotlight more than a couple times a week if even that much.
But maybe some will find it more compelling than I do.

Apple and their not so Crazy Business Strategies

I think releasing Tiger in April also gives Steve a lot of space to talk about the initial success of Tiger at WWDC. He can highlight early feedback from customers and create the buzz factor with developers.

I believe we will be seeing some MAJOR changes in the Pro market this year. People keep mentioning that the Pro market has been neglected for far too long. It hasn't, it's simply a natural cycle and Apples efforts are going to pay off for the pro users in 2005. Dual Core PowerMacs, the arrival of a solid PowerBook entry, Final Cut Pro 5, Motion 2, Shake 4, a new UNKNOWN video related application, Quicktime 7 with H.264, and who knows (maybe some new, unknown products?) it's very exciting.

It seems to me when you think all hope is lost with Apple, they suddenly smack you round the face with a flurry of great products that they have been perfecting whilst we have been pulling our hair out for updates.

Keep Going Apple,

:D

Thought you were going to Linux :)

For the server side of the business, Spotlight offers a potential alternative to Lucene or Verity (NA on OS X). This would provide a content/metadata search repository for the server files-- without the necessity to take the search offline to create collections that are immediately out of date.

The fact that Spotlight capability is accessible via the CLI, means that it can be easily incorporated in traditional web server scripting languages such as ColdFusion, PHP, Java, JSP, Perl, etc.

First let me say this... I will upgrade to Tiger when it releases but so far I am not overly impressed with it's " New Features"

I know I wont ever use iChat AV or Dashboard and only use Spotlight occasionally. I do use the RSS feature of Safari but I also have RSS functionality already without it.

I guess I will use Quicktime 7 at the same rate I use Quicktime 6.

The only thing that Tiger has that I need is support for 64 bit memory for POSIX compliant command line applications.( That is my sole reason for upgrade.) Besides the fact that I always upgrade my OS's when new ones come out.

Here is a crazy theory.

This rumor is wrong 100%.

This rumor/news is really big since 10.4 has been anticipated and talked about for a long time. It is the first true 64 bit OS. Right now it is bigger news than PowerMac Speed bumbs.

In order to get Apple to back off, Think Secret came up with a big piece of news that is 100% inaccurate. This way when April 1 comes around and there is no Tiger, Think Secret will look dumb and say that their source was wrong.

I just don't see Tiger coming out so soon. This is a OS that needs to make its debut with some big hardware annoucement. June still sounds like a better time frame.

On my desktop I run OS X.(And I am happy about it)

But yes our chance of going to LINUX for our servers has reached 90%+
In the last 2 weeks we have uncovered very compelling reasons why we will be better served by Linux(on our servers)
We have a few more tests that should be completed by the end of next week and IF they go as expected we will switch.

Spotlight isn't useful to us on the Server. If anything it would have to be disabled if by an outside chance we wound up on Tiger, because it would steal precious CPU cycles from our number crunching.

I was told by an employee in the Apple store, that the last time when Panther was released, free upgrades were given to everyone who purchased a computer or the old OS within the previous 30 days? I know this topic has already been brought up, but I wanted to see if there was anymore information? I want to buy my new "toy" ASAP, but also don't want to have to pay for a Tiger upgade. Does anyone know whether or not Apple normally provides these free upgrades? Thanks.

Apple did this (more or less) in the past for Panther and Jaguar. However, DON'T make any assumptions - wait until you see OFFICIAL word directly from Apple. Not a rumor. The reason I say this is because I don't think it was exactly 30 days in the past, so don't assume that. The worst possible thing would be to buy just before the cutoff. Also, it's always possible that they wouldn't do it at all this time (unlikely, but possible), so just make sure there's an official announcement first.

As someone else said, you'll still probably have to pay $20 shipping/handling, so that's a consideration as well. When in doubt, wait until there are confirmed reports that Apple is shipping new machines with Tiger included. ;)

This is not going to happen.....

Apple is still working on 10.3.9. Why release 10.3.9 in March and turn around a couple of weeks later and release 10.4??

Has anyone given ANY thought to the proposed announcement date?? It's APRIL 1st -- april fools day.

Why release a major OS upgrade and new hardware a couple of months before the WWDC??

None of this adds up. I am sticking with the WWDC as the most reasonable time for Tiger, new iMac, and new iPods (maybe all will finally be in color!!)

If all of that shiny new hardware and cool software is announced at the WWDC I will camp out at the closest Apple store until I can buy it all at one shot!!

Lecube...

10.3.9 has NOTHING to do with 10.4, we've been over that more than once...

And earlier in the thread the april fools day angle has been well covered...

Well, I guess we know someone that didn't read the thread before posting. Turns out April 1st is Apple's 29 birthday. Although, for other reasons, I'm not sure I believe this, as stated in another post you more than likely missed.

You should know that the phrase "do the math" "jumped the shark" on Super Bowl Sunday 2005.

10.3.9 is necessary to fix a number of bugs that have plagued Panther.
I personally know of 3 that were submitted by us that have finally been fixed and rolled into this release. We have been waiting for over 6 months for these fixes for our servers. Funny thing is that for us they are coming too late since we are close to switching to Linux.
But what the heck at least they will be fixed for others.

You mean like releasing 10.2.8 on 10/3/2003 and Panther on 10/24/2003?

Yea, Apple always supports at least 2 versions of the OS.

Too bad you can't make OS X Server do what you want! Is Phil Schiller aware of yoiur situation? Apple seems to be placing a lot of emphasis on making inroads to the server segment. I would think they would do almost anything to prevent the loss of an existing large OS X Server installation to competition.

Which Linux?

Broadly, if you can discuss it, what does Linux give that OS X lacks?

I really hope not. Apple have released a lot of OSXs in quite a small time period.

Anyway, they've already said the time between OSX releases are going to increase.

I'm sure Apple have a list of goodies to be put in to 10.5.

The scary part is if Apple releases tiger that early there is still time for ANOTHER OS release before Longshot makes its debut and not only another release but an 18 month release timeframe.

Most excellent!

*drools at the thought of what might come out in 10.5*

OH MY GOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!

hehe.... i just saw the Thinksecret rumour about Tiger posted here and nearly fell off my chair :D

Please, Please, Please be true :)

Of course it will be released in April!

Windows XP 64-Bit is going to be released as a stand-alone product in April too, which reinforces the early release of Tiger. Apple will want to beat Microsoft to it for marketing purposes.

Reasons Why Tiger could be released:
* Increased builds of Tiger
* Amazons original shipping date was listed as March 31st
* Lots of books on Tiger due in April
* Final Cut Pro 5 and other video app updates/introductions at NAB and
reports suggest they require Tiger to operate
* The appearance of Widget downloads on Apples website
* Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit due in April
* Steve would be able to report feedback to developers at WWDC and create
the buzz-factor before announcing new hardware (obviously)
* Apples 29th is on April 1st (I'm stretching things a bit now :p )

This is not just some crazy rumour, think about it!

Launch on tax day? I doubt it. That's a very busy press day.

I hope it is sooner like everyone. But I'll easy wait for a release with more features and few bugs every time.

Everyone is aware of our problems.
Apple has worked very hard to try to solve our problems.

We have been testing YHPC/YDL
Gentoo and Debian

We might just roll our own distro.

It isn't so much what it lacks as to what's wrong with it.
Fundamentally it is a kernel problem. It is fairly long and involved to go into all the details and I have discussed several areas on this board in other posts.
We have done a lot of work to even address some of the problems ourselves by rewriting portions of the kernel. We successfully acheived good results out of our work but in the last few days have discovered other areas that might require too much work to justify the effort.
The die is not completely cast yet though. We still have a few more tests of Linux to perform to determine if it has the same problem. We don't expect it will. If the results are as expected then we will switch for sure.

I think you forget a more relevant reason for Apple rushing the release of Tiger. . . H.264. This technology is absolutely needed for the delivery and storage of HD video content. Like Steve said, this is the year of HD. It is my opinion that Tiger precludes the introduction of a new consumer device from Apple dealing with HD content. I fully expect to see some kind of HD receiver/recorder for home entertainment by the end of this year, and the sooner the better. Apple needs to capitalize on the huge amount of iPod buzz and translate that into other areas of business.

Just my 2 cents.

NAB

i was at the NAB in Vegas last year and Apple was the darling of the ball. With the announcement of Motion, FCP-HD, Shake 3.5, & Xsan, they proved that they were able to make a splash at this event. This year would allow them to trump the convention again.

By the way, the Apple booth was packed at all times last year; but the Avid/DigiDesign booth directly across from it was a bit empty. It seems Apple is treating NAB as another MacWorld.
