i was really looking forward to this update because i miss listview. i've been using hierarchical dock since i upgraded to leopard, and i like it. i might continue to use it, because it gives a lot of space to each icon in the list. this works well for me, because i have a list of all my classes with custom icons for the folders, so it's nice to have the large icons. listview, from what i've seen, looks pretty ordinary.

It won't. been said time and time again already.

Really? I was under the impression that everyone was saying it would be fixed in this update. Perhaps they were all just talking about the time machine over wifi issue and not the general problem with wifi? And just for my education, what is the problem people are having with wifi under leopard?

i'm having very big issues with Photo Booth. I need to reboot it after nearly every picture taken because the camera becomes dark. And when i change effect, it bugs. It is very annoying! And since me and my friends always use this... and it always bugs... i don't want them to think that my computer is not good since it is the best one on earth:D

Anyway, too bad they're not addressing this issue in 10.5.2. Is anyone having the same problem as me???

Hard to call anything "firmware" when it is on flash EEPROM, more like non-volitile code.

There's not one single thing that works! I usually have a wi-fi printer (via AirPort Extreme base) and it doesn't work! hard drives won't work either.

So everyone says it won't be fixed with this build, but what about a F/W fix to AEBS as others have stated may be needed to fix airdisk. Does anyone have the inside track on this. Everyone seems to hear about software fixes, but not firmware.

I believe Apple will fix it... but when, I do not know. Just my opinion.

Airport Fix!

This is the only thing I want. I have Oct 2007 MacBook black and the wifi goes in and out and states..."scanning" and then reconnects. About every 15 mins. On many different hotspots.....

FIX it please Apple!!!!

I would imagine that this is the case primarily because software updates are much more complex and require wide dissemination to developers to test. So there is a large pool of people who are "in the know" on the latest progress of internal software updates. Firmware is probably not that way--it's unlikely that anyone other than Apple itself tests the firmware updates before they are shipped out. That means the pool of people in the know for FW updates is quite small. That's not too good for finding things out in advance. We just have to have patience... bleh.

Totally off the topic, but I'm just curious - how come most of the non-Apple software titles do not necessary follow the gradual increments in their update releases (e.g. Toast jumped from version 8.0.1 straight to 8.0.3, omitting 8.0.2). All OS X updates from the very beginning are in perfect order, no numbers skipped until the next major release. I remember OS 9 being an exception, it jumped from 9.1 to 9.2.1, I don't recall seeing plain 9.2 around. I believe that was also true for pre-9.0.4 versions of Mac OS. Just curious, is it just a different way of labeling the releases and making some of them public?

I wonder when/if Apple will get around to addressing the issues with their cheap Agere/Lucent firewire chipsets in many of their newer systems. Fear is spreading around to pro audio and video users.

What problem? Also most machines that have firewire these days seem to have 'cheap chipsets'. How are those any different?

Numbering gaps probably mean the some release bombed during testing, and was never publicly released.

If the bad test release was called "8.3.1", and had to be fixed, then the eventual release might be called "8.3.2".

To someone who didn't test the software, it might look strange that the version jumpe from "8.3" to "8.3.2" - without any public "8.3.1".

To support people, however, you cannot have a situation where "8.3.1" might be the bad test version, or the fixed version. Therefore, if "8.3.1" is released to anyone outside of the enginerring team, then the fix cannot be called "8.3.1" - it must be called "8.3.2" even if that appears to create a gap.

(Yawn)

This is all very nice, but I really only care about making Time Machine work on disks connected to an Airport Extreme.

Come on Apple. Do something. Or say something. Either one.

Whoa. I didn't know that happened to anyone else. All this time I thought it was my crappy internet. I suppose it still could be, but who knows. Anyway, it's incredibly frustrating. It just happened again.

I hope this fixes my SR MacBook's bad habit of crashing every other time I insert a DVD. Anyone else have this?

Peter Sichel on Why Time Machine Doesn’t Support USB Drives Attached to AirPort Extreme Base Stations ★

Peter Sichel (of Sustainable Softworks) in a comment at MacInTouch:

There is an option to have Time Machine show other network attached disks:

defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

But Apple is hesitant to enable this as the default since it places the integrity of interrupted Time Machine backups at risk. So Apple is in a difficult spot with respect to supporting 3rd party NAS devices.
I heard a similar explanation from a few people at Macworld Expo last week, albeit regarding AFP, not USB — more or less that the AFP implementation in current AirPort base stations isn’t robust enough. Backups seem to work, but fail when you attempt to restore from them.

I'm hoping that fixing these issues is a high priority for them...
