Despite, yesterday's claim that Apple is targeting Friday as the release date for Mac OS X 10.5.7, Apple has seeded developers with a new build (9J60) according to World of Apple with seed notes reporting only on known issue: the Safari 4 Beta will not install on 10.5.7.

We're not sure if this means it's less likely that Apple may reach the rumored Friday goal.

Safari 4

I just don't get it: why would Apple wanna release n Mac OS X update that doesn't allow Safari 4 Beta to be installed? Wouldn't that mean that anyone who has Safari 4 Beta already installed (like me) won't be able to update to 10.5.7? ...
If they really are gonna resolve the Safari 4 Beta issue.... I would assume that it takes more than a week to fix that problem. Otherwise they would've done that long ago. Unless, along with 10.5.7 there will be a new Safari 4 Beta update, too?

Back to 10.5.7, I have a feeling this will be released just before or near the iPhone 3.0 announcement as it is probably an important update to allow certain compatibilities to function properly. I don't expect this to be finalized till June.

Not likely, 3.0 is a few months off yet.

10.5.7 is already set to bring in most of the parts necessary for 3.0 to operate (note syncing for example) correctly and the new version of iTunes will fill in the rest.

This build is likely the final we'll see soon.

Safari 4 beta is not an OS problem, it's likely a Safari 4 problem that will be addressed soon with a Safari 4 update.

Actually, I'd put money the 10.5.7 update is waiting on the Safari 4 update to release.

[...]with seed notes reporting only on known issue: the Safari 4 Beta will not install on 10.5.7.

Seems a big enough issue that we wouldn't expect 9J60 to be the final release version of Mac OS X 10.5.7.
Does MacRumors even read what World of Apple wrote in their article?

It's an issue with the installer. The installer contains a version check and therefore denies to install on anything later then Mac OS X 10.5.6. World of Apple received numerous reports that the Safari 4 Beta works without any problem with 10.5.7, it just doesn't install when you didn't install it before.

That's not a showstopper at all. As many developers already noticed; this could be easily fixed by issuing a newer beta or just upgrade the current Safari 4 beta installer.

You dont even need to use a new installer, basically Apple are purposely blocking people from installing Safari 4 beta in 10.5.7 to stop 10.5.7 becoming too popular before its official release.

Yeah. I read it. And they don't say the issue is specifically a "version check". You either know that independently or made it up just now.

So the general focus areas are exactly the same as the previous seed.
Only 1 given issue - Safari
Only 1 given change - NSURLConnection compatibility fix

An NSURLConnection object provides support to perform the loading of a URL request. The interface for NSURLConnection is sparse, providing only the controls to start and cancel asynchronous loads of a URL request.

What gives? New SL build, 10.5.7 for next Tuesday?

According to my sources the issue is a version check. It seems very unlikely - if the issue was dependent on Mac OS X 10.5.7 like you indirectly stated - Apple wouldn't have been able to resolve this issue earlier in the development process.

[...] It should be noted that many developers have confirmed to World of Apple that Safari 4 works fine in Mac OS X 10.5.7 but there appears to be an issue with the installer. [...]
They don't confirm the issue is a version check, but it appears there is an issue with the installer. That issue would probably be related to a version check.

Interesting detail from 9to5Mac:
We also know they ramp up their part time workforce in their Austin support call center a week before updates and we have word that that has begun.

Oh, and a bonus? We think there just might be a new version of Safari 4 and iTunes this week as well. Call it a hunch.
New version of Safari 4 seems likely like I said earlier. The 'Safari 4 Beta only installs on Mac OS X 10.5.6' issue would be a solved then. I suppose they're not planning to release iTunes 8.2 already, are they?

Oh now that's pretty cool. Thanks for the chronology summary. Looks like we're a tad overdue for a refresh. ;p

Come to me, Snow Leopard!

DNS and 10.5.6

Wonder if 10.5.7 will fix the problem with 10.5.6 and some DNS, notably RoadRunner's. My 10.5.6 and Roadrunner's DNS together create a web experience worse than dial-up. It's fixed by using a public DNS, but there are some compatibility issues with 10.5.6 and a large number of DNS machines.

If no issues are found with the new seed then it could well get bumped to final status and released. Personally speaking, if I've seeded a release then I'd want to wait at least a week so that reports can get in, just to make sure nothing else has crept in.

If I had to pick a day, I'd go with Monday/Tuesday, but it depends on your support status, if you're 24/7 then you'll have cover at the weekend if you release on a Friday, otherwise, people could install and get no response until Monday if there is a problem, and 48 hours can seem an eternity when you have problems.

I hope a new Beta is coming.

Really Safari 4 Beta has been a big bag of hurt for me. Frankly they have been a little slow in releasing fix updates. So let's hope the reports are correct in that a new beta is coming.
