A "few right now"? Did you follow the link?

There are 32 systems shipping next day or within a couple of days. A "few" ?????

It's much more likely that the turtlenecked overlord is throwing a massive hissy-fit about his mistake in stiffing Intel and going with Nvidia chipsets (e.g. 9400M) and now the engineers are struggling to redo every motherboard without changing the holy unibody chassis.

[Aiden slaps self.]

I mean, next Tuesday for sure.

Don't believe the hype - the i series of processors from Intel are all very nice but I doubt you'll see i7 in a MacBook Pro because it would make it larger and heavier. i5 and i3 have some neat features but like the extra cores on the desktop, there is a dire lack by software vendors taking advantage of them so even if you do go out and could purchase one - don't expect a massive boost instantly.

As for the rest, I doubt that'll require massive redesign since it would have been very short sighted designing something specifically for a given motherboard (and in turn chipset) given the world of IT is turbulent.

Is the 4 cores (or threads) is too many thing still popular?

CoreImage memory leak

I hope they fix that f*ing CoreImage memory leak that's been around since 10.4. Draw something in video memory and then draw it main memory into a bitmap and all the bitmap data is leaked. It's a known issue that makes any image processing app that deals with more than a few images in any given run pretty useless. I even filed a developer bug report to which they replied that the problem had been fixed in 10.6 and asked me to verify -- NOPE still there. Jeez.

You do realize that Snow Leopard has GCD for a reason? It'll take full advantage of all the cores plus threads for all the applications using GCD.

The only problem with the latest i3/i5/i7 is the onboard GPU. Apple does not want to go back to rely on Intel for graphics. So hopefully they'll have Optimus from Nvidia.

Good lord. Those were the days.

CP/M boot floppy.
VisiCalc on a second floppy.
Wordstar ('ol reliable Wordstar!) on a third.

Oh yeah...

How do you explain to a kid these days when you typed the (4Mhz) computer never stuttered, and when you opened or closed a file it happened pretty quick, and when you told it to justify, it lined up both sides of the margins so it looked good on a FILM RIBBON, IMPACT PRINTER, so your MULTI-PART forms worked well. :)

Wordstar had collumn cut and paste in a word processor for goodness sake!

The kid's first questions will be, does it do pron and WOW fast? Sadly, no. It just did some things really well, like the phone in your pocket, and the watch on your wrist. It did "texting" and "tweets" before you knew what that was or probably was even born. It was called a BBS.

Rocketman

It's interesting to see the "4 cores (or threads) is too many" side forgot about the virtues of multithreaded goodies packed into Snow Leopard and other modern operating systems.

Don't we normally extol how great GCD is? Among other things...

I had a quick play around with GCD, Its fairly simple the blocking process. But from what I've read, you have to be careful what you block and the logic behind your blocking.

You can't. :D

Wow, yet another week passed without this update being released. I really expected to see it last week.

I did too. And then Apple teased us with those small updates last week. The good news is, we'll at least see a new version of iTunes next week, if not 10.6.3 itself, ahead of the iPad launch, so that could bring some potential performance improvements.

Not necessarily :

Mac system requirements
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 9.0 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
iTunes Store account
Internet access

Keep in mind the iPad will have it's own version of iTunes. The only thing that the current version for the Mac needs is an iPad tab.

got 10D573

Hey Guys,

For some reason software update automatically gave me 10.6.3 build 10D573 this morning, along with an imovie update - 8.0.6 (821).

Don't really notice anything different so far.

Not sure how to post pictures or I would include a screenshot.

Mike
