Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Shipping in September: $29 for Leopard Users

Considering the new icon isn't even in the WWDC build, it's possible Apple is just experimenting and may not use it in the final build. So save that icon while you can, as it may be a one-off.

You mean ... they might pull another 'tabs-on-top'? Damn lol.

More processing power has made software development more important over hardware, so new things might be coming sooner than before.

i dont know if i agree with you here, lately the software developers have been quite lazy with their development because the processing power of general computers has been increasing 10fold, allowing them not to care as much.

multicore processors has STARTED to change their habits but not by much, hopefully competition will force them to focus on their performance much more.

Anything's possible, but I doubt that.

Snow Leopard is more or less finished. At this point, it's just finishing up the minor touches, like icon work, maybe some typeface work, etc. I do recall there were several System Preference icons that were used in Leopard development builds, before the final one was revealed a few months before RTM.

I'm sure this has been said, but did anyone else find it strange that during the keynote Windows 7 was slammed for being "just another version of Windows Vista". And then we are presented with "just another version of Leopard" ???

It's Apple's hypocrisy at its finest.

I love Apple products but completely loathe the corporation. "Think Different" was without a doubt their best advertising campaign. It's sad to see them go from such a high point to such low ground, doing nothing but endless mud-slinging and put-downs.

It is a bit hypocritical, but you if you look at that statement in context, it isn't really that bad. Serlet was trying to say that everyone hates Vista, and Win 7 is just more of the same. However, Leopard is pretty well liked, and SL is refinements to an already good OS. He was saying that Microsoft needs to fix Windows, while Apple can stick with OS X because it works.

Windows 7 is nothing more than Vista with some interface tweaking, some programs removed and a couple of improved programs (UAC, WMP) while Snow Leopard, apart from the interface improvements and the improved programs, is bringing new technologies and performance improvements.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

And, really, there's little point in explaining how wrong you are because you're clearly too in love with Steve Jobs to even bother looking at Windows 7 objectively.

Well one thing Windows 7 fixed what has been a highly non functional taskbar. Love or hate the dock it is much more flexible than Vista's taskbar.
I would agree with this, although not everyone likes it.

There are also numerous improvements made to system indexing, SuperFetch, ReadyBoost and a number of other low-level technologies. Oddly enough, Windows 7 is making improvements that are similar to the way Snow Leopard is making improvements.

But it's made by Microsoft, so it's obviously evil and primitive.

Lol. It's an Apple Developers conference. They aren't supposed to be truthful. You expect them to be biased as they are rallying the troops. When you are talking to potential developers for your platform are you really going to say, "Our OS competitor has a new system coming out that has improved many of their failures and provides much of the benefits of our own OS but stay with us anyway"?

Yeah tbh I do expect them to be truthful, or at the very least not mention it. But this sort of childishness is considered standard business practice these days. In fact it probably always was, doesn't make it any less like the sort of insults you expect in the school playground.

Sorry, but that's the truth. Windows 7 does not really introduce anything new.

I sometimes think some people come here out of hate for Microsoft rather than affection for Apple. You're not doing a lot to dispel that notion.

W7 and SL are both variations on the previous OS. That's not to say there aren't substantial differences under the hood.

And Windows 7 is Windows NT 3.1 at its core, and OSX 10.6 is NextStep.

And both Windows NT 3.1 and NextStep owe a lot to earlier systems.

Multi-touch was around for 25 years before the Iphone.
____________

Few things in computing are really new, it's almost always variation and enhancement of earlier work.

Yeah usually an "innovation" has been introduced by some small company no-one's ever heard of, or at the very least lots of people have similar ideas at the same time. Not all those people have the same clout as Apple to market it.

Exactly. People should understand this point.

That said, it's key people understand that W7 and SL are not merely service packs. Every time I see somebody come out with the 6.0 to 6.1 kernel argument I feel like slapping them for their ignorance and stupidity.

The service pack nonsense is spouted all over the internet.

It's ALWAYS been $29! (right?)

I know I have walked in to an Apple store and purchased an UPGRADE disc for $29. I will never forget this because when I later decided to wipe my hard drive and reinstall the OS, I was stuck because it was an upgrade only disc. I believe it was a Tiger upgrade disc.
More recently, my boss went in to an Apple store and bought a $29 Leopard upgrade DVD that I have at home. I can not use this disc to do a full installation.

So as I understand it, $29 gets you an upgrade disc and I would assume the standard FULL installation disc is $129. Apple's marketing department is putting a spin on this to full the press and it's customers.

I posted this question on the Apple board and got my question removed due to rumor and speculation! Considering Pogue's recent article, I think the "rumor" of the $29 Apple OS X installation DVD needs to be put to rest. There will be a lot of unhappy customers trying to do full installs with an upgrade DVD.

I will be really annoyed if that is the case. I really prefer to install new versions of an operating system from scratch. If Apple wants to make geeks happy they should know better.

If I put the upgrade disc in for a fresh clean install and it says "please insert a Leopard disc in to verify upgrade eligibility" and then it checks it and says "Thank you, now please put your Snow Leopard disc in to continue your clean installation" then that might be sufficient to satisfy Apple's concerns as well as mine. Or, check to make sure the model number of the computer is one that originally contained Leopard. Upgrades of Intel Tiger's and stuff would be another problem to solve though.

The ironic thing is that Microsoft-style license keys would probably do well to mitigate Apple's concerns about this.

And I'm sorry if someone has posted authoritatively on this topic already as I haven't read any of the 26 pages of comments that were posted on tuesday or later. :p
