also, why is everyone saying snow leopard has a smaller memory footprint? on the spec pages, leopard needed 512 mb ram, and snow leopard needs 1 GB of ram.

No one is saying that. It has a smaller disk space footprint.

im clients

A shame that iChat doesn't get support for other IM clients. No one I know uses AIM, they use MSN instead. But I hate the client from Microsoft, and don't like the other clients either.

I find adium quite satisfactory.

I didn't realise, those of us who bought the recently upgraded macbooks, or anything after June 8 this year can upgrade for just £7.99 when Snow Leopard comes out.

http://www.apple.com/uk/macosx/specs.html

That's pretty cool.

I have just tried registering my 13" MacBook Pro using the Online Store link half way down http://www.apple.com/uk/macosx/uptodate/ and after logging in and entering my purchase date, serial num etc. The form won't accept my Purchase Date... is anyone else having this problem, or is it just me?

Entirely different?

They optimized so I could recover 6Gb even though most people probaby have 500gb+ of storage. Its an entirely different mindset... Its great.

Since a clean Vista install is about 7 GB, there's hardly room to trim 6 GB from that ;) ....

Windows 7 does knock about 1.8 GB off though...

Which is better?

  • Apple putting 6 GB of fat in the system, then removing it
  • Microsoft leaving the fat off from the beginning

64bit? Ultimate? That makes a difference. Vista 64 Ultimate isn't exactly small.

Ehm, Vista doesn't have to support PowerPC too, does it?

Additionally, Microsoft has saved disk space by REMOVING applications, Apple hasn't.
AND, I'm sure that the Ultimate version (the only version even worth considering) would take more disk space.

why is disc space even mentioned in this topic? its pointless.

Fewer files does make for faster imaging, cloning, and installation.

There isn't a problem with the lack of hard drive space today though. Maybe if it was Tiger or Panther on an ancient machine.

installation is a good point, i can see where the smaller OS would come in handy for that - especially now since MBP's and MBs are only SATAI ;) (i know it doesnt REALLY effect them but SSds will see a noticable change maybe).

for the majority of people though i seriously dont think they will be cloning that often, so it doesn't really matter that much (i doubt apple has this up in their to do list)...

Cloning does happen more often than you think given how relatively easy it is.

I mention imaging here and people think I'm the crazy one.

im sure it does, i have considered it myself but am WAY to lazy to actually implement a monthly/weekly/whatever system to backup (time machine will do for now).

if we were to run a poll i would say that there would be a good percentage (maybe 20%?) of users who clone on these forums, but it doesnt really indicate all mac users, too hard to tell i guess however i agree that it is becoming more popular as the programs become easier and easier to use.

can anyone tell if apple has fixed a minor, yet annoying bug in the SL builds?

when the "show item info" option is enabled, and one has a large hard drive, the amount of free space is truncated... SO annoying. yes, I can Get Info the drive, but it'd be nice...

I had filed a bug report a long time ago, and I contacted Apple the other day, and they said they had no new info on it.

external hard drives!

just wondering which is the best external hard drives out there such as brands, and over all look! i was checking out iomega and some of there hard drives look pretty nice and feedback would be great!!!!

I'm sure I'm not the only person to think (or feel) this, but what really annoys me, about these upgrades, is when we come to the end of a previous OS, the OS seams to really slow down, thus making us having/needing/wanting to upgrade!

But of course, it's a business, and this is how they make their money, but it kind of peeves me off a little...

I'm sure they just put in stuff to slow everything down, and that's no conspiracy theory or paranoia, I've have a lot of mac user friends over the years experience with the same issues...

Just my 2 pence worth

Leopard price drop

Any thoughts on if/how much the price of Leopard will drop once Snow Leopard is out? I've got a Powerbook that's still running Tiger, and I'd love to upgrade it to Leopard, but it hasn't really been worth it up to this point because it's a secondary computer that doesn't get that much use. But a decent drop in price would perhaps make it worth while. Any thoughts?
