YAY! For marble! :D

Seeing as how Snow Leopard focused on behind the scenes work,
some fresh new visuals would MAKE the OS for me. ;)

I don't think it makes so much sense to have your secret next generation product leaking out like that, user agent strings are easy to obscure. I really don't understand why web servers really need to know that information.

A full year in beta? Are you crazy?

Why not? Operating systems today aren't such simple things as they used to be.

I see things a little differently.

I believe 10.6 and 10.7 can figuratively be seen as two different stages to one operating system. Let me explain...

I think 10.6 can be seen (just as Apple said) as a "maintenance update". It's obvious that touch is coming to a Mac desktop sometime soon. I don't think Apple wants a repeat of the Intel switch, which did stifle hardware sales a bit after the switch was announced. I believe Apple just wanted to clean house with 10.6 and just make 10.7 touch ready. 10.6 was for the core, 10.7 for the interface. Bring it to developers quickly and have touch hardware for sale right there with it, unlike the Intel switch. Some of you may remember that Apple had G5 tower cases with Intel branded boards in them. They were used to give developers access to Intel systems before Apple sold any to customers. I don't think Apple has that luxury this time, because it is indeed another transition. It is also one that will affect the customer more than previous transitions. They must have hardware ready to go out the door when developers see it, it would be too costly to develop a touchscreen Mac for developers only.

As for the tablet I don't think it will run Mac OS X. But I think 10.7 will bring touch to the desktop and it will come sooner than expected.

Yeah, and Classic support also.

I'd love to see a classic environment, I got some old myst games and such I'd love to play.

So possibly, touch interface abilities, maybe true resolution independence.

I'm not terribly surprised to hear they are "already" working on it though. I'd be surprised if they hadn't been working on it while 10.6 was wrapping up.

10.6 was a complete anticlimax, can we just skip .7 .8 etc. etc. and go straight to 11... will there be an 11?!

"wouldn't be surprised if they drop support for single-core machines."

I was surprised they supported single-core machines in Snow Leopard. They probably only sold a couple dozen core-solo mini's anyway. Since my 2006 mini with core duo (no 2, as in yonah processer) will be 4 - 5 years old when 10.7 comes out, I suspect they will drop support for non-64 bit processors. Cleans up the code, speeds up everything, one less kernel to support, etc.

I think they’ll call it Lynx or Cougar based on the fact that they trademarked Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Cougar and Lynx around the same time period (Summer 2003).

Weirdly enough, Apple let “Lynx” expire in December of 2007 and “Cougar” expire in May of 2008.

Of course, they could easily get them back.

As for the release date? Like others, I bet 10.7 is previewed at WWDC and will ship in Spring 2011 before WWDC ’11. I don’t think they want to go two consecutive WWDC’s talking about the same Mac OS, again (Leopard debacle).

To soon. Although while we're on the topic, I'd like to see aero interface like on vista, the long awaited task bar to aggregate opened windows which would finally put mac os x on equal footing with windows.

My bets are that there'll be a developer preview at WWDC but no build. Most likely a Dev Preview release at WWDC '11 with GM release just before WWDC 2012.

10.7 probably was in development alongside with 10.6, so it's not like they started 10.7 back in Sept 09. I honestly think 10.6 is just the first part with 10.7 being the second final part of a complete OS modernization from the ground up. It would take half a decade or more if they don't split the development in half. The 10.7 will focus mostly on the front end instead of the core like 10.6.

I don't think 10.6 is good enough for Apple to wait ≈30 months to update it.
Maybe, maybe not. Apple did say at a prior WWDC that they would slow down on future Mac OS X releases... the long-term trend is for fewer releases per year but more splashy releases. We shall see.

The newest components of Snow Leopard were Quicktime X and the Dock. These both have black, transparent UIs. Look at the drop down menus in the iTunes store as well.

These are no doubt hints of what is to come.

A full year in beta? Are you crazy?
Windows 7 was in beta for about this long. Everyone on here seems to love it. So why not.

I'd like to see aero interface like on vista
You do realise Aero is based on Aqua? And that was bit OTT with translucency and transparency, so Apple scaled things back.
(edit: you may be out on the wind up, in which case: you got me — well done!)
