I was disturbed that Archive and Install caused Aperture to lose its registration, and I had to put the serial number back in again. Surely Apple can handle that better?

I have to admit to being a bit underwhelmed on this one -- Panther / Tiger seemed like bigger jumps. I am curious to see how some of the under-the-hood changes affect applications in the near future.

My gosh, if there was no such word called "complain" you would create it. Was it really that much trouble to type in the serial for Aperture?

You had 80% disappointment about Leopard and you say the older versions of Mac OS X were a bigger jump well I think you should downgrade back because Leopard is not really for you. :p

pleasantly suprised

sooo ive been watching how things have been going for the last few weeks with leopard (i've had a copy for a week or so) and i must say i was a little nervous because everyone has been so nit picky about things. (seriously no matter how bad apple gets it will never be worse than windows vista seriously--- my school wont even put it on their computers because it is so bad).

anyway i really do like leopard. mostly i like it because its definitely faster. when i first got my mac i guess i had expected it to run at the speed leopard runs it at, and it didnt. i got used to it, but leopard soothed my intial frustrations.

it made me sad that my iLife 08 wasn't on there anymore (i did an erase and install and im still glad i did it that way). but, honestly to get it back was an easy fix (since they give you reinstall disks for a reason).

sooo right now im doing a quick reinstall of iLife 08.

also--- roxio toast is a life saver for me. it backed up all my files and is now putting them all back together and back onto my HD.

so yeah, basically i am very happy. i don't need all the nit picky things. all my programs work still, and run faster.

so for any of you reading this who are nervous from the earlier answers--- don't be. im glad i did it.

thanks

Most of us have had a very good experience with the upgrade; Lord certainly way better then my XP to Vista experience (went right back to XP). Like others here I am sometimes amazed and what some complain about. But that is what these forums are for; to post what is wrong so some can learn and others can help.
Thanks for the positive input.

Overall i like it. The new way it handles networks and computers on other networks has helped me a lot in my workplace but two little things really bother me. They would fall under the same category as being able right click on the folder in Tiger´s dock in that apple has added a "top secret feature" and then feel they must remove something people (well at least me in the examples below) found useful.

1: I think there should be a lot more columns in the spotlight search result window than just name, kind and last opened. I know i can filter it by clicking the + sign but thats not the same. I cant see why apple thinks we should have so few options of columns in the finder itunes comes with 38 ,unless i can´t count, so that to me is a bit mind boggling.

2: Removing the seek bar for audio/video files in the preview column and leaving just a play and stop button (same with get info on that file) and they have removed the option to preview an audio/video file from a spotlight result. One would think they would want everyone to use Quicklook but why take away the option? Quicklook certainly has its qualities but if i spotlight an audio file thats not in itunes and want to play it i can through Quicklook but only if the spotlight result window is the selected window all the time or i can select the file and command I and have an extra window open. Quite bizarre to me.

I am sure many will consider this nitpicking but why remove features that worked fine just because you add something that can do a similar although perhaps "snazzier" job?

Oh I know...but if someone were to tell you "I love you, but" it would make you a little uneasy I assume. It's like this here. It's like "Oh I like it, but I would fix all these little things. K thanks." I wasn't sure if I would like it because of them (Of course I didn't read EVERY SINGLE MESSAGE because there are SO many) But up until like page 7 that's the gist I got. But at the same time they didn't have the update. :)

But I do know there are people here who have had a good leopard experience. I mean to be honest any uncomfort I have had with leopard is NOTHING compared to my frustrations with windows. I have a professor who HATES macs, but I don't know why. I just can't understand it. :-D

first impression? Why did I do this?

Yes, Leopard looks good, works well, except much kerfuffle about smart mailboxes not working (mine do not) and scanner drivers also not available. My Canon LIDE25 cannot pass the toolbox says driver not found. Many others report similar problems and Canon admit when questioned that only 3 of their scanners are Leopard friendly, although their website states almost all should be working with 10.5.
There seems to be no positive help yet with these problems. What a buggy OS, after so many that began well! Very disappointing after shelling out - also had to buy new Toast 8 from Roxio. Expensive stuff. We never really buy our computers, do we? It's a sort of life mortgage principle.Or like paying protection money to a racket?

So far so good... but SLOW COPYING!!

I installed Leopard on a PB 1.25GHz with 2 GB RAM oh, and I had previously installed a 100GB 7200rpm HD on this machine

Installation went very quickly. I did an Archive and Install. Everything, so far so good. It took a while for TIME MACHINE to back up my HD, though.

One thing I DID notice, is that when I copy from one drive to another, it seems as if I'm using a USB 1.1 connection-- yes I know that there IS a USB 1.1 port on the old PB... I am using the 2.0 port....

I have a 48GB iPhoto library on a 500GB G-Raid2 Drive connected via FireWire 800... and I am copying that Library to a USB drive... my previous experience with copying between these 2 drives is that it takes about 1 min +/- per GB... it said it will take 3 hrs...and as I've watched the progress of the copy....9 GB of 48 GB has taken 18 min, with 2 hrs to go  ... Anyone have similar experiences?

Not quite

Using Tiger I found USB coping to be painfully slow. So I only use firewire now.. silly I know but I find Leopard to be quite fast ... I've copied my iTunes library which is 102gig and it does go faster with Leopard... I shun USB now.

I also stay away from USB as much as possible, but I don't have a full 48GB of free space on any of my other drives. (All FW btw) I guess it is what it is...:(

Geesh...

Boy, people sure do like to complain. I've seen some of the most nit picky neagative comments about this or that. And is the new dock really that big of a deal?! Wow.

Sure, just like everybody else, I have seen some big time changes with this new OS. Some may take a little while to get used to, but overall you have to admit Mac OSX is great!

Take it easy!

I just installed Leopard today, and I now have a Documents icon in the dock towards the right. It would be great if the stupid thing actually worked though, as whenever I click on it, a bunch of documents show up for about two or three seconds, then it disappears and at the same time maximizes windows that are supposed to be minimized. What is up with this? I installed the 10.5.1 update as soon as the Leopard installation itself was finished.

soooo cool!

all I have to say is leopard is the coolest thing since sliced bread!

I love it... spaces, mail everything, its so useful.

I just wish you didnt have to right click events in iCal to get info...

Well, I installed Leopard on my macbook 1.83 CD a few days ago and I have to say that while there are things I like about Leopard, I think Apple should have spent a bit more time working out the kinks. Here's why, so far:

Safari 3.0 is not past beta yet in my opinion. It freezes up more often and does not respond well to scrolling (two fingers on the scrollpad). - As I type here I keep getting the beachball!

Stacks is useful at times but irritating more often. You can't easily change the stacks icon in the dock - instead it shows the first file in the folder. I've found a way to change it, kind of, but I'm not really satisfied with the results. Like many others, I wish you could change the folder functionality back to the way it was in Tiger.

Little kinks. Since installing leopard, my laptop with make a wakeup sound while its sleeping and closed. The apple light goes on etc. Generally, the laptop has had some wake-sleep and freeze issues since Leopard.

A small whine about the dock - you can only have it in 3D when it is at the bottom of the screen. I have mine on the left so don't get to see the pretty 3D!

I have not found the wireless interface to be all that intuitive, though it is useable.

Still, I think apple has done an excellent job with the interface changes and functionality overall. Spaces is great. I like the new ical. Mail looks good (though I've experienced a few minor glitches with it too).

I will not install leopard on my other machines yet though. i've heard about too many problems with leopard on mac pros to make me feel comfortable about using it. I Store all my major work there and do my most intensive work on it... no way will I risk any of that.

Leopard Erase and Install

Worked perfectly. I first backed my disk up with Super Duper to an external firewire disk, then I booted from it to make sure all my data was there. Then I did the erase and install. Once it was over I was asked if I wanted to use migration assistant to copy things from an old Mac and I pointed it to my external disk. Everything copied over just fine, all my emails, music, application preferences, iCal etc. all of it transferred safely.

I ummed and ahhed over this for a long time and the guys at the apple store seemed stumped by it: they didn't think that an external disk would work with migration assistant and thought that I would need to copy over everything by hand (lol?). So I just wanted to chime in with a positive experience and reassure people that might be apprehensive that erase and install is very easy to do.

It also fixed the problem I had with Boot Camp (I had removed it sometime ago which messed up the partition despite me using the assistant properly) so I now have my skanky XP install back to play Portal :)

(Intel iMac early model)

You could look at movie times, stocks, ebay items, stuff like that.

I don't know why they had to get rid of that app.

Never found any movies for Vancouver, or any city that I had a chance of getting too. Maybe that's why it disappeared? Google or MyTelus.com did a far better job for me.

Mah impressions

So, i actually just WON leopard in a drwing, but I have to create a review and post it online. anyway, I have it installed on my 12" 1.33GHz iBook G4 with 1GB of RAM, everything else stock.

Installation process:
Well, it seems to be quite user-friendly. Installed within around 20 minutes, and I was doing the Archive and Intall option (I think).

initial bootup:
Took about 70 seconds to fully reboot. Once it turned on and I completed the Setup Assistant, I discovered:
Everything's so shiny! The 3D Dock looks nice, and unlike a lot of people, I like the default wallpaper. for the first half hour, the fans were running at 6700RPM, and it got incredibly hot. After that, it was running fine.

Speed:
Not blazingly fast, but a teeny bit faster than Tiger. It's possible that I may disable Dashboard, that often helps with RAM issues. Cover Flow slows everything down a bit. One thing that is annoying is the lack of a "Starting Mac OS X" box, so I can't comare the speed of the bar with the other computers I have.

BTW: I ran Geekbench on it a few hours after I had installed. The score? 512!!! Under Tiger it got 798!! That's a bit creepy.

Obviously my impressions have huge holes in them, but I'm in class now on a Windoes CE terminal, so I will write more l8r. oh god bell. gotta go :D

The grey top-bar, folder icons, default desktop image/login desktop image, the dock, the Apple logo (top left corner) and stacks are ugly!

The Window's network shares don't work properly (although I finally got write access with 10.5.1 even still it says "Guest").

Luckily unlike many others I haven't had too many serious issues, but I'm about one step away from dropping a nasty WinXP theme on the GUI to pretty it up some (and I hate the look of XP....blue and green...?!?!?!)!

.......oh wait......the new iMac's are ugly too....black borders bah!

This must be all a part of a hairbrained marketing ploy to entice PC users to switch by giving them what they want: ugly hardware & ugly GUI's...WELL DONE!!

Leopord has to be the biggest mistake I could of ever make. I got an imac a year ago and it has worked great unlike my last one. thanks to Leopord now it doesn't even work. I can't even start up or fix it anymore.

Here is a tip for you people. Don't upgrade to Leopord, ever.

I had so many problems with Leopard since I installed it (the week it was released), that today I resorted to wiping my iBook and reinstalled Tiger. Now my system runs twice as fast (it seems) and I'm much happier. I'm contemplating doing the same on my PC running Vista.

It's fascinating how the multi-billion dollar corporate giants of Microsoft and Apple both seem to be deteriorating in terms of quality OS releases. I suppose that as they try harder and harder to push the boundaries, the complexity increases exponentially and bugs become more prolific.

Long live Tiger and XP!
