oh i've been meaning to ask: i no longer have a splash screen when booting into Mac OS X... like it no longer says "Mac OS X is start up" (or whatever it use to say) and show the progress bar... it just goes from the grey apple icon and loading indicator, to a blue screen, to my desktop... (but it's not slow)

is there no more splash screen in 10.5?

edit: forgot to mention that i did do a clean install...

Splash screen and progress bar is still there but because it boots so fast you don't see it.;)

so far so good for me. but I am getting the feeling this is really a nice incremental upgrade for os X.

Personally.... I believe $129 is a bit steep for the upgrade.

Should have been more like $79. The new OS is really not that much of an upgrade.

Me too. And the blue screen is there for like 5-10 seconds. I think it really needs a progress bar of some kind.

Safari 3.0 was worth the $39 for me ($100 iPhone rebate :)). That browser is seriously the fastest browser I have ever used before. Amazing.

After a year of using Firefox on my Mac I'm now a Safari convert.

FRIG ME!

Mosaic is very awesome! Shame I don't use screensavers any more (just turn monitors off after 3 minutes).

But that is mightily impressive!

Heh, just realised Safari 3 does that IE style magnify feature. I can't stand that

Cool tips tricks and features

Is there A thread for Cool tips tricks and features of Leopard? If so were? If not someone should make one so we can see all there is to offer based on what we all think is cool.

Mosaic is bad-A. I though it was dumb for about 2 seconds until I figured out what it was doing. Thats the kind of cool crap that should be posted in the the thread I referred to above.

I really like the 10.5 update... GJ:apple:

dumbass question, but does the mosaic screensaver work only with iPhoto, or does it build it from an Aperture library too?

don't have iPhoto installed, don't intend to install it, just reinstalling Aperture now..

Then you my friend are feeling a bit tired :) Seriously, this is probably the biggest upgrade of OS X since 10.0 from OS 9. Not only is the entire OS upgraded in every way for the user from the Finder (which is major) to the built in apps like iCal, Mail, iChat, Safari and new ones like Time Machine - but the internals (the frameworks) are huge. Its why so many app developers are making Leopard only versions for their next major releases. Think about it - why would they do that? Because Leopard offers *so* much for developers.

Every time Apple adds another special effect feature, it adds to the Mac OS X popularity. They aren't important features when it comes to practical usability compared with all the productivity improvements like Spaces, Stacks, Time Machine, improved spotlight searching, notes in Mail, etc. But hey, having fun is important too! :)

Waiting patiently for my copy of Leopard.

It's been in "Item Shipping Soon" limbo at Amazon for 3 days now.

spiffing, it works :)

Looking at the software compatibility lists - I'm going to have to wait a while before moving to Leopard. I rely on too many of those "problem" apps for work. CS3 updates won't be out until January, so even if I talk my boss into moving to CS3 (which is apparently "in the works", but not guaranteed) I'd likely see issues.

It's too bad, but none of Leopard's new features are "must have" for me so it's more of a "ooh, shiny, I want it" issue. I've already got an rsync-based backup system, so Time Machine will only be adding eye candy. I was hoping to move to iChat with 10.5, but Adium still works just fine. Spaces would be nice, but I only use VirtueDesktops occasionally as it is. Quicklook is probably handy; but I've lived without it so far.

There's still just a twinge of jealousy at this end, though. :D

Me too. I'm really exercising some self-control by not jumping in and ordering an iMac and all the software I planned to get as soon as Leopard was released. I've got CS3 ready to go in its box and even though that PDF says I should be okay, I'm just as happy to wait a bit longer and watch what problems fall out and how they get fixed.

Google docs works in Safari - even though it says it doesn't.
Page Creator still doesn't work.
