What are you on about? Java is free, just download the SDK for whichever version your building software against, install it and reset your JAVA_HOME. Thats what I have done and all my terminals set up the JAVA_HOME on launch...no problems.

Download Java 6 from where? Apple have not released it. In fact, they have pulled the DP versions.

( Sun do not make the OSX JDK because Apple wanted to instead )

The fact that Java 6 is missing is truly a shame. If you go to java.sun.com you'll see that there is no Java 6 distribution for Mac OS X. Java 6 has been available on other major platforms, Windows, Linux, Solaris for many months.

The fact that Java 6 is unavailable prevents me from using my Mac at my workplace as we have standardized on Java 6.

I WANT my transparent menu bar!!! I was really looking forward to this, but Apple seemed to disable this capability on "older" hardware. (including my not-so-old iMac G5) I don't understand why, as all the other graphical effects work fluidly on my mac. This is my biggest concern. Everything else in Leopard is perfect, by me.

Someone please tell me how to enable the transparent menubar or I will flip out.

Are you talking about the top menu bar? Funny you want it while lots of other people want what you have a non-transparent menu bar. I wouldn't be so upset its not all that great.

Loving the mosiac screensaver, having to show it to everyone though is getting annoying lol

Overall i have mixed feelings about leopard, on one hand there are certain aspects that i'm finding i like which before just from the keynote demos, the video guides etc i thought i wouldn't, the new finder being the prime example, however i'm still looking for something to hit me and just go wow, something to justify all the hype, admittedly i'm not using TM at the moment, so when i do maybe that'll do it for me, or maybe one of the updates will bring something new.

And then there are things i do like alot about it, the new dock, stacks, mail being the ones to come to mind, how many people can say they have trouble seeing which apps are open amazes me to be honest

If you have trouble seeing that, i would recommend seeing a eye specialist, it's bright enough, if anything i find it to bright.

Well thats my opinion, i'm enjoying Leopard, but i'm still waiting for that knockout punch to bowl me over

The Dock should have more options and the Open apps ARE harder to read than Tigers Dock. The Blue on gray with the reflection....is hard to see.

I'm running the clear option dock now and loving it

I'm an artist...

It's really all a matter of personal taste. I've liked it since it was introduced at WWDC and followed the development of it since. It was in love at first sight. I've seen many different screenshots, and I think it really works depending on what background you have. Right now, unfortunately I'm stuck with the flat opaque grey regardless of desktop background. Some people perfer it, others like me, don't.

I believe there's a thread about this:

I want my transparent menu bar. BAD. :(

I would gladly give you mine if I could. I hate that thing. My eyes cannot stop getting distracted by it, the transparency makes it in actuality stick out like a very sore thumb. and thats not it a good way.

since Apple thankfully unified their app's window style, they are all dark now. so when you put one near the top of the screen it clashes very bad with the transparent menubar. it is not a good thing

They are harder to see yea, especially on my PowerBook. The blue dot doesn't stand out as well. 2007WFP is okay, but it's bit more obvious on my iMacs display.

Odd. My 12" PowerBook has the transparent menu.

Thats really weird cause I installed it on my PowerBook G4 and the menubar is transparent. Looks really good actually, I like the way it turned out... Maybe its just a bug, I wouldn't think that it would require that much horsepower to do...

All of this looks very cool. I just ordered Leopard! Hopefully I'm not gonna have installation issues.

I also have no transparent menu bar and I also get the weird screen flash when I maximize windows from the dock; or the dock disappears and then reappears.

G5, X800. I wonder if it has something to do with after market GPUs.

Although everything else seems to be working fine.

I think you got that backwards...... ?

FRIG ME!

Mosaic is very awesome! Shame I don't use screensavers any more (just turn monitors off after 3 minutes).

But that is mightily impressive!

Heh, just realised Safari 3 does that IE style magnify feature. I can't stand that
The only thing screen "savers" are good for is wasting energy and using up your screens lifespan quicker. You're doing a good thing putting them in standby mode.

No you aren't alone. there are MAJOR bugs in Leopard with the graphics using many aftermarket cards and builtin ones. I know the pros are going crazy because of lines all over everything especially with the x1900 radeon cards. if you look on apple's support site there are thousands of posts with similar problems. leopard was definitely pushed out the door far too quick and is unpolished unlike anything apple has ever released that i can remember. quite shocking really

new screen shot functionality

hey all,

found another new feature.. sorry if it has been reported already...

but try taking a screengrab using Apple-Shift-4 or Apple-Shift-Control-4

It now gives you the realtime pixel coordinates as you move around the screen, and once you click and drag to make a selection, it updates in real time with the pixel dimensions of your selection..

I for one love this new feature, as taking specifically sized screengrabs is a common task in my design job!

Nice one apple... nice little touch!

So what's the general consensus? Are people finding Leopard to be a disappointment? It seems from the comments and votes that a lot of people aren't satisfied. :(

Backwards in what way?

Apple develop Java for OSX
Sun create Java on other platforms, i.e., Linux, windows, Solaris et al.

If you try and download Java for OSX from the Sun site, you'll get redirected to Apple.

Can only speak for myself. Not disappointed at all. Love Leopard. A poll would give a better overall picture.

EDIT: oh. looks like there is a poll and not many disappointed.

I am loving Leopard. I actually really like both the menu bar and the new dock. I've always kept my dock on the left side, but now I've got it on the bottom. The mosaic screensaver is great. Sure, most of it is just eye candy, but it makes it more fun. Safari does seem slower to me though, and everyone else says theirs is faster. Not sure why I'm stuck in the slow lane.
