Leopard is soooooo slow, and not just on my computers. I went to the store and played with an Imac with Leopard, but launching programs could still take up to 10 seconds. So nothing has changed on that front and it actually looks like there are many more problems, since Apple has taken a habit of distributing alpha-beta software and label it as 1.0. or more. Safari is 2.0 with a beta 3 and still can't run javascript properly.

I am not going to move to Vista now, but I'm starting to wish I would. They have more innovative laptop designs, they have a very fast operating system, and contrary to OS X, Vista stuff seem to just work.

I wonder if anyone reads this kind of post and believes it. I don't wonder if anyone writes this kind of post and believes it.

I was trying out some stuff with python and ran into some strange results:

>>> .01 * 3
0.029999999999999999
>>> .07 * 3
0.21000000000000002
>>> .007 * 3
0.021000000000000001
>>> .7 * 3
2.0999999999999996

Don't know where this is coming from.

Steffen

What were you expecting? This is correct behavior for Python -- standard floating point math -- and is reproducible on pretty much every platform and every version. If you want decimal math (and it seems you do), use the decimal module (built-in as of v2.4 and later).

Where is the thread where we can bitch about things that use to be there (in Tiger) and now aren't (in leopard) as well as new features that disrupt my finely honed work flow?

There are many things i like about Leopard but there are a few annoying things I don't.

I am particularly angry that there are functions that have been present for years in OSX and are suddenly gone.

Don't want to sound like a whiner but it is grating my nerves...:mad:

1- No audio control or audio at all for that matter in the preview column when selecting a movie clip.
2- stacks uses the first folder within the main folder as its icon instead of the folder itself. This throws out the use of custom icons for folders. It also makes the icon in the dock constantly change as you add new content to the folder making it dificult to visually locate dock items.

There, I said it.:eek:

I do LOVE the new DVD app as well a the web widget and spaces.
Connecting to shared printers is easier too.
The dock transparency is a bit annoying but this is easily fixed with some custom desktop image photoshopping.

i picked up my upgrade disc on friday night w/ the tshirt, haven' upgraded my macbook due to my schedule but tonight's the night... hope i don't have any problems....

Sorry to hear about all your problems. I won't ask if you bought separate licenses for all those macs ;)

Anyway, I think the dock is the same size and it's just perception. All your other comments are valid - although I disagree. Stacks are excellent. Spaces make my MacBook feel 4 (or 16???) times bigger. Safari is snappier. It's what I wanted :)

Ever hear of a Family Pack? :rolleyes:

The removal of the audio control in column view sux bigtime. Why on earth would they take that out? Many QT movies have the volume cranked. If I need to preview a QT movie adjusting the volume is a must.:(

Is something wrong with using the keyboard volume control?

I completely agree. I've been beta testing Leopard, and number 2 especially is odd. For example, when you change the stack for the downloads folder in the dock to "Sort by name", the folder icon goes away and only shows the first item in the stack. I have Applications, Utilities and Downloads folders and it is difficult to tell them apart.

I have a work around though. I created a folder within the folder, named it "#Documents" or "#Downloads", thereby making it the first item to show in the dock stack. I then used "Get Info" on the Applications folder and the "#Applications" folder I created, copied the Leopard one and cut and pasted it for each respective folder to match the folder I just created. Otherwise, don't know how else to change that.

What he means is the preview controls for a movie thumbnail are gone, which allowed for previewing a movie and altering its volume while doing so. I find that to be a bit odd as well.

According to Apple, in their official training presentation this morning, this is a "feature". It's more because Stacks seems to be focused on the 'download' folder, and the icon changes are meant to make it easier to see what you've downloaded most recently (right clicking on the icon allows you to set these preferences).

I just ran into the custom icon problem myself, while trying to put some custom stacks on the dock for my wife. My solution was to put an alias of the stack's folder inside the stack's folder. I named the alias with a leading @ to make it come first alphabetically (the stack sort order). It puts an extra useless item in the stack, but it lets me control the icon in the stack by setting the icon for that folder.

Yes, but when the icon changes to show only the first item in that stack (and for example if that stack is your "documents" folder") and you have more than one stack in your dock and they're all set to show the first item in that stack/folder, how can you tell them apart without opening them up? I work for Apple as well, and have had training, but it's an issue customers have addressed as well as fellow mac specialists, geniuses and creatives. It doesn't make sense, Apple should allow for the option to change the stack icon as well as "sorting by name" so that the stack icon still shows what folder is in the dock.

I agree that this could be an issue. Apple should've kept the existing dock options, and simply complimented them by adding the ability to use Stacks as well.

Does anyone else whose just done the upgrade, get a PC called 'Thomson' pop up in their shared network in finder?

I have it, but thought it was just my neighbor stealing my internet connection, but a mate a few hundred miles away who also did upgrade also has it, so it can't be that

Ever hear of a Family Pack? :rolleyes:

Yeh, I have heard of the family pack. I was only teasing anyway, sorry :)

As for your issues - I wish your computer a speedy recovery. These problems seem to be hitting the news... uh oh... :mad:

Oh my god. I have that too. I assumed the same too. My girlfriend even asked who it was and I said maybe someone using the same exchange router as us (i.e. guessed). Wow. Unless this Thomson guy is stealing internet usage from people all over the UK? [I'm in Manchester].

Are you with BT Broadband or do you have a Thomson Speedtouch Router?

I had this when connected to my mother in laws wifi network.

Have got BT Broadband with the wireless homehub whatever it's called, pile of crap anyway

Hopefully it's something to do with that, perfect excuse to get a Airport Extreme then :D

Some of the little Leopard features I like:
  • The login screen has smoother transitions.
  • TextEdit gives a brief "pulse" highlight to text as you search.
  • You can press F8 after F9 or F9 after F8 to use Exposé and Spaces at the same time. (Unfortunately, you can't also use Spaces' control keys within Exposé.)
  • In Mail, if you set rules to play a sound for certain types of mail, you now hear the sound once for each such message, instead of once overall, when you receive a batch of mail.
  • Safari warns you if you try to close a window with multiple tabs open, as Firefox already does.
