I was trying out some stuff with python and ran into some strange results:

I'm not liking the new dictionary widget for two reasons:

First of all, now it takes two clicks to switch between dictionary and thesaurus, and secondly, I can no longer right-click in the text field to correct my spelling.

Lol, is that the only problem you are having with Leopard? Takes so little for some people.

i have no idea why but ever since i installed leopard, i cant use wikipedia. i was even using the safari 3 beta in tiger before and it was fine. my connection hasn't changed and i havent had this problem ever before. but when i do a search on wikipedia or through the new dictionary using wikipedia, it says my connection is banned or unverified; says it can't verify my user agent. happens in firefox too.

heck i never even edit anything on wikipedia. i barely ever use it. no way i would be banned for doing something bad or something of the like. i thought it was my dsl provider, but now that you posted this i am thinking twice and wondering if there is more to it.

has anyone else had strange problems being blocked from any sites or weird internet problems? maybe it is just a coincidence. dont know

I think there's more to it. I do not think on any level that you have been banned from Wikipedia if you say that you've never edited anything on there.

It seems like some sites are doing something to the safari webkit? I know some sites have always been flakey, even with Safari 2, but I didn't try the beta of 3 on this very premise.

Let's see what other reports come up, as people often take a few days to visit the sites they use. I might dig up some others - for example, the reason I wanted to go to the Japanese Apple site was prompted by another user saying that his iPhone is named in Japanese and iTunes had problems with that this time around. I changed the name of mine successfully mind you.

most likely so. it is weird since the main wikipedia loads fine. but when i search for anything, that page comes up complaining about the user agent. which is why i tried firefox with no luck either. even with the safari debug menu showing and going through all of the user agents that safari can fake, nothing works.

i think it must be a coincidence. the only reason i said it was because you posted that question and thought it might be related. and with all of my problems so far with leopard, i thought maybe just another thing to put on the list
i will post later if it fixes itself. btw i can go to the japanese apple site that you couldn't, it loads fine here

Mine loads too now. No idea what that was. Safari wouldn't have it - only firefox/opera/shiira would. Interesting.

Oh well - it's all fun and games. If we wanted to be 100% safe we would have waited until about Christmas time to upgrade.

My only answer ...

Are you High?

There are definitely issues with Leopard.

And my WIFI is as secure as you can get. IP limited range, MAC filtering, WPA2-PSK, and monthly key rotations in the 20 character range. That and if someone hacked my router at 3 in the morning with 5 open wireless networks around me they have no life.
No something funky is going on.

REBOOT

All just to install one program.... its the same every time...with windows. You guys think you have it so bad just give windows vista a try its FRUSTRATION all packed up in a shiny box.[/QUOTE]

That's what's called Windows Genuine Advantage!

However, I somehow can't see the advantage, which is why I left wondows almost 2 years ago and never looked back!--))) (That's after 20 years of being a windows/dos user, PITA registery issues and the list goes on and on and on!!!!)

My BT home network (homhub, unchanged SSID, unchanged WEP) works just fine. I didn't even have to put the password back in. Bit lucky there I guess. I prefer the wired connection when I am connected to my ACD though.

Leopard is certainly a first release. I installed on three machine different problem on all three including the one that I did a complete erase and install.
I have no alerts or system sounds. Zero. I checked and all of the alert folders in the library are totally empty. Weird.
On the macbook it deleted the Keychain. Gone. Poof. Had to start over and build a new one.
Those of you with iSubs for a speaker can put them on E-bay. Not recognized. Sorry. Stacks are just plain poorly done. I would rather have the option to go to a simple list view. The transparent menu bar doesn't bother me as I use a dark gray solid color desktop. If I did not it would bug me to no end. What is the purpose of it being transparent? At least make some of this goofy stuff an option. It can't be that hard.
Oddly before the release I thought I would like the 3-D dock. After using it however I would go back to the Tiger Dock in a flash. It provided more room for the icons and it was much easier to see what apps are open. The blue glow just is too subtle.

On the good side Aperture and other graphic heavy apps run noticeably faster. Quicklook is awesome. Safari has yet to crash.

I really hope 10.5.1 comes out real soon.:(

Yep, I was at an Apple Leopard training session this morning, and my demo Macbook was getting the 'you're not connected to the Internet' error on occasion too. It's like some kind of timeout setting in the background. The world's fastest web browser is also the world's most impatient web browser, apparently.

It was also interesting to see during the demonstration, how there are a lot of minor bugs in the OS that need some fixing. The poor demonstrator's computer wouldn't do quite a few of the things he was trying to show off.

Another interesting point that came out of the session, was the fact that Time Machine is not a guaranteed backup method. You still need hard copies. The demonstrator's external TM backup drive died... therefore, no backups. It was also quite clear that you need a dedicated drive for Time Machine, since it requires the HFS+ filing system and will eventually consume all available space on the drive (you could partition, of course). Which is a good reason to not run Time Machine on a network server. They specifically pointed out that this is not the intended use for TM.

Possibly the best feature I saw in Leopard this morning was the new Parental Control features, to create guest accounts and limit website browsing. It also tracks visited and blocked websites. Very cool.

No problems with Vista here. But then again I know how to configure and tweak Windows to make it my *coughs* yah. I seem to find 80% of the people who bitch about Windows do not know how to use it to begin with. First rule of Windows. Disable the services you aren't using. Apple learned this long ago. MS? Not so much. In terms of user intervention to really USE the OS it goes Linux Windows OS X. Where in Linux you still need to know the command line to get things done (Its gotten better though.), windows you need to know where they hide features like the group policy editor, or the service manager. And OS X? Well it has its fair share of hidden management features however by and large to USE OS X its ready out of the box which is why I prefer OS X over Windows. I cam make Windows my *coughs* but the time involved. Bah. Whatever. I'd rather be spending that time doing things.

Sorry to hear about all your problems. I won't ask if you bought separate licenses for all those macs ;)

Anyway, I think the dock is the same size and it's just perception. All your other comments are valid - although I disagree. Stacks are excellent. Spaces make my MacBook feel 4 (or 16???) times bigger. Safari is snappier. It's what I wanted :)

The two big things I noticed so far is that Leopard broke my Juniper VPN into work, so I can't dial in anymore from OS X (can through Paralells), AND the Fire IM app won't work either.

I'm holding off on putting it on my Mac Pro until some of these kinks are worked out.

Paths!

Hi Got my copy of Leopard yesterday and installed it on an external HD. Running nicely on both my iMac G5 (20" 2.1 GHz 1.5GB) and my Mac mini (G4 1.42 512MB).

One nice feature that I find useful (and may have been in previous version of the OS, but isn't in Tiger) is paths in the title bar of a window when you right mouse click. Works in the finder and in Safari.

Leopard is soooooo slow, and not just on my computers. I went to the store and played with an Imac with Leopard, but launching programs could still take up to 10 seconds. So nothing has changed on that front and it actually looks like there are many more problems, since Apple has taken a habit of distributing alpha-beta software and label it as 1.0. or more. Safari is 2.0 with a beta 3 and still can't run javascript properly.

I am not going to move to Vista now, but I'm starting to wish I would. They have more innovative laptop designs, they have a very fast operating system, and contrary to OS X, Vista stuff seem to just work.

What Are You Smoking? Leopard has it's bugs but in no way is it slower than Tiger and it is most certainly more user friendly than vista, and yes I've used vista a time or two. Everything in Leopard not only seams to work but it does work.

You my friend should go back to Windows, in fact I highly recommend it for you. Mac OS X is not a system that is right for you.

I went to the Leopard launch event Friday nite at my local Apple store and Leopard ran beautifully. Slow? No. Zippier performance? Yes. Is it perfect right now? No. Is that just cause to say, "Well I just may go back to Windows"? Umm yes, if you are not thinking straight.
What is this ridiculous thing about, "I'll just go back to Windows" every time there's a small issue or something someone dislikes about a Mac? Sometimes I feel like people want the Mac users to beg them to stay and try and convince.
Well, I'll give you the get go, Vista will work for you. OS X works for me. I have too much Mac software to let issues make me wanna just jump ship which makes no sense.

Hmmm, then I wonder why there are more negative votes on this thread. Oh well, I'm happy, and looking forward to seeing if they release those axed features in future updates.
I think it's the usual, that people who have a problem search out a thread that offers answers and support. The poll is a wider sampling of the MacRumors crowd. (which is still a tough audience):)

Luckily as a Mac user I don't have to go back to Windoze or Vista. I have it on my mac. And running Leopard and Vista next to each other constantly reminds me why I prefer OSX.

Two possibilities.

1. We have a troll here.
2. This person has run\played with Leopard on 2 defective systems.

All I know is that Leopard is SUBSTANTIALLY faster then Tiger. By far.

Oh crap, my bad, he is a jealous troll from a Windows forum. I shouldn't have replied to his post. I just figured smart people only visit here. He's not.:p
