if they don't want to have the latest and greatest internet, why do they need the latest and greatest OS??

I never understand why people are complaining so much. how bout complaining about your internet options available to you and upgrade to something where it puts you in 2011.

Please tell me your not that unobservant?

1MB+ internet is NOT everywhere, even less so in remote areas.

Use some common sense please.

we are living in 2011 not 1995. there are other options then just your local provider. Every heard of Mifi's, etc? I take my 4G verizon mifi on vacation, and it works out in the boonies, with great speed when not even on 4g. heard of satellite internet?

even if it is available. like the guy above said, not everyone can get Fedex or UPS to deliver and don't live near an Apple store. You're gonna complain then bc you are out in the boonies and aren't living in 2011?

As long as the entire download takes less than a day, which it will even with 512 kbit connection, it's still faster than next day mail, if it's available in your area.

exactly. people are acting like they need to sit at their computer for the entire time and watch the download. Start the download at night and let it work the the entire night and it won't be a big deal.

Right, because everywhere has all those services and/or people to pay for them.

Get real. Not everywhere is covered by decent internet.

Friend of mine in a village 100 miles from london barely gets 1Mb and isn't stable at the best of times, but that is the best they can get. 4Gb downloads are simply impossible.

I have access to 100MB internet, I couldn't care less about the download.

All I want is the ability to reinstall from physical media, or, at the very least a partition on ANOTHER disk.

You cannot in any shape or form deny that in 2011 download OS which can't be booted from to install is stupid.

In 5 years time maybe not in 2011.

It's not that people don't want to have faster internet they can't. For example, I have the option between a local ISP that is a little faster than dialup, going back to dialup, or going with satellite Internet which is faster, but is either ridiculously expensive or has a very small cap on it so a 4GB download is simply impossible. You are lucky enough to have fast internet and that's great for you, but it would still be nice if Apple gave options for people like me who like to upgrade to the latest OS, I've bought every OS X revision since I switched to macs, 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6, however if there is no option to buy lion on physical media I will be skipping it and when snow leopard gets too outdated I'll start looking at windows again.

again, we are living in the year 2011. not 1995 when everything is snail mail. Why does apple need to cater to people that live out in the boonies with dial up? Why do you need the latest and greatest OS if you can barely even access the internet?

Again, go buy a Mifi, you'd be amazed at the speed.

- No more free Xcode, and it sure ain't included in the download

does it come with gcc and the associated libraries? I will be quite irritated if I have to spend $99 just to get what should be included so that I can compile open-source and macports programs. I don't need Apple's gui development tools.

Christ, you assume I don't know about all this
I frequent computer forums, I *know* about all the options.
But unlike you it seems, I can fathom that there are reasons why these other things ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR A 4GB DOWNLOAD!

BTW, MiFI options in the UK are limited at best and have 1/10Gb caps per month, you telling me that anyone with that would download Lion rather than get a DVD which would come in day???

Download only is stupid. If you can't see that then I'm afraid your quite narrow minded.

BTW: Download only is the future I agree, and here is the turning point. But it isn't 100% DL only yet!

where do you live?

Nearest major city is Sacramento California, but I'm in a rural area without the option of fast Internet. It gets within a mile or two of where my house is but not close enough and there doesn't seem to be any plans to extend anything the rest of the way.

"Apple is genius. Now, if you want the next version of the Mac OS, you have to register an Apple ID, which may encourage you to buy more things in the App Store and iTunes music store in the future."

This isn't going to last long.

If Apple insists on this pathway in order to buy or upgrade to Lion, I sense that sales may fall off quickly (after the initial "must haves").

And I also sense that a big "black market" is going to spring up as well. That bay full of pirates is going to have to put on extra bandwith.

Prediction:
At some point, watch Apple back off from insisting that Lion be bought exclusively from The App Store. I expect both a DVD version and a USB stick version in due time....

again, if you haven't noticed, physical media is slowly dying. The MBA doesn't have an optical drive anymore, so now you're gonna be mad at apple for removing it when that's what most everyone wants anyways?

You guys would all complain if they charged $99 for Lion bc of the packaging and distribution and OVERNIGHT shipping charges.

I'm not narrow minded at all, but i see where the future is going. In my house, physical media has already died completely. We have an appletv and a roku for our movies and don't even own a dvd player. There is not a need for them any longer.

What are you going to do when physical media really dies completely? Bc that's where it's headed.

What Apple should have done, and maybe still will, is price Lion at $29.99 for Mac App Store download for say $69.99 on a 8gb USB stick. Maybe even make people have to activate their USB stick to the Mac Store if that is what they are now using to limit piracy.

The would be better off driving people to the Mac App Store rather than requiring it.

For me it isn't a big deal as I have a fast connection at home. But does seem silly to have to download it 3 different times for 3 different systems in the same home. Who knows, maybe the final version will have a "burn to USB/DVD" option for those who do purchase/down from the Mac App Store but then want a recovery device or to put it on other systems using the same account.

yeah i could see that making sense, but then there'd still be people complaining that they are being penalized and paying $40 more bc they have a slow internet connection that they can't help. nothing is a win win.

If microsoft offered appstore only upgrade to windows, there would be howls of laughter and universal agreement on why microsoft should offer alternatives.

In some countries 3G is prohibitively expensive and / or requires lengthly contracts. All just to download OSX Lion.

People are who arguing that download only Lion upgrade is good enough are seriously short sighted. "Hey, just take your iMac / Mac Pro to your nearest Apple Store" in order to update a piece of softare - no big deal... ROTFL.

Yep, Ever heard of data caps? I used to have satellite Internet and while it was sort of fast, they had a cap of somewhere around 200MB a day or you could pay more money and get the cap raised to 400MB a day either way you could use up all your bandwidth everyday and it would still take over a week to complete the download.

Didn't see my edit then?

Oh and BTW I have a media server and all my rip'd disks are streamed.

My MBP will have a optibay in it.

I'm medialess as they come....

You assumed that I don't know all of this...

Just to clarify I don't care about the download. I only care that I can install NOT in-place upgrade.

I'm just pointing out that some people, somewhere, would rather have a physical disk.

Especially in the UK where 90% of stuff arrives within a day and 99% within a week.

and when it comes with a $129 price tag for the physical media, you guys will be complaining even more. "i'm being penalized for a slow internet connection that i can't help bc i live in BFE"

I doubt it. There weren't any complaints of slow internet connections when OSX did cost $129, why would there be now? Snow Leopard was sold for $29 on DVD. I doubt people will complain about having to spend $5 to $10 more the physical media version. People understand that digital media is often cheaper.

All this pro "download only" screams of "I'm alright jack" self centred, me, me, me crap.

BTW - my internet connection is well capable of downloading 4GB in a few hours.

I personally think it sucks for those who have not got access for whatever reason to an adequate internet connection. Apple *should* be offering alternatives. Before the keynote I would have thought Apple would have offered a physical media version, even if it costs a bit more.

Anti-Hackintosh?

I assume that the lack of a disk option in Lion is intended to undermine the Hackintosh phenomenon?

bc they weren't offering it for $29.99 as a download. This is how they are choosing to offer it for sale. obviously, it makes sense considering we are living in 2011. Why do they need to cater to someone that has a super slow dial up connection?

Our president promised fast internet for everyone in the USA. Did everyone forget? Why all of the worry? It should be available by July. That's also likely when Gitmo will be closed, we'll be out of our 3 wars AND unemployment will cease.

It's all planned. July is the month everything comes together. With one gesture or swipe, poof... all is solved.

The DVDs would have made for nice "green" windmills, however. Instead of batteries we could all have DVD windmills attached to our MBs.

Good business plan - excluding a significant portion of people from purchasing Lion. Great way for user adoption up to Lion :-\ Great user experience from Apple. The first OS that requires a fast internet connection for no apparent reason.

In 2011, adequately fast internet connection still isn't available everywhere.

Exactly. Also, keep in mind that part of Jobs' reasoning for the $29 price tag of Lion during his keynote speech was so more people could partake, then in the next breath he potentially alienates a broad base by only offering one channel of distribution.

Really, we just need some clarification from Apple. Talking about clean installs after the failure of an HDD isn't sexy, so I can understand why it was omitted from the original discussion. As things flesh out in the coming weeks, however, Apple needs to update their support documentation to address these concerns.
