Can I seel my app outside the Mac App store?

Well.. now im worried.

I hear in the video, "this is not the only place but we thing its the best", or something like that, I guess this mean I can sell my app normally outside the Mac App store, right?.
Now I wonder how is gonna be the acceptance process for the mac apps, because for the iOS apps Apple its very strict, if I give a complete different look and feel to my app, customized scrollers, tabs, blah balh blha, will apple approve it?, or will they say/.. "hey your app doesn't run on landscape mode".. or better yet, " you app doesn't support full screen mode".. so what should I with the app Im making for already a year? go and recode, to make it Apple compliant?...

Cool Features

I liked the new features and can´t wait to see the ones they didn´t talk about. I don´t like the Apps icon since it is basically the same as the new one for iTunes let´s just hope they don´t change the icons for Safari, Mail, etc... to the new design, I mean, the dock will look pretty bad with all icons looking pretty much the same.

I hope 10.7 gets better...

I was not impressed with anything they showed with Lion.

I fear the 'Gated Community' mentality Apple has with iOS will spill into OS X. Of all the things I wanted on OS X, the AppStore was not even on my list...

Not liking the new Expose, specifically the grouping of similar windows. With grouping, it now requires an additional action to get a windows that you want.

As for 10.7 as whole, I hope there are more features than was showed today. Lion is suppose to be a whole new OS, not an tweak like Snow Leopard, I find it hard to see retail pricing more than $100 like many of us are speculating.

On balance, I think they got it mostly right. Launch Pad looks useful, and I think integrating exposé and spaces in 'mission control' is an important simplification and a step forward for usability.

Having said that, I'm not still not keen on the magic mouse, which seems to be what a lot of this stuff hinges on. New Airbooks look nice, but I don't think I can swallow the combination of slow and expensive.

I love how the big feature is the Mac App Store (more money in Apple's pockets). Mission control doesn't look good enough to justify the upgrade.

GL

Well maybe it's because they're releasing the Mac App Store feature way before Lion gets released. And do you really think they would release Lion touting Mission Control as one of the only worthy feats. ? Maybe we're all getting too spoiled with innovation... Looking back just a few years there's tech now I never even would have imagined holding in my hands at this point...
Seems like there's nothing more left to innovate thats able to surprise us. We live up to those things before they get released but they always disappoint so many of people on these forums... I think that's sad... even if they would release something that's so far ahead from any technology available today, we still would be bored the very next day and yawn upon it...

I like Mission Control A LOT and I like that they're going fullscreen. (And for the record, no... this isn't the same as "maximize." It's about having apps have interfaces designed specifically for fullscreen.)

And... one more thing:

THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS CONVERGING iOS AND OS X!

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this yet. When Steve first explained that Back to the Mac as a carryover of features from the iPad to the Mac, rather than what I'd expected it to be, which was along the lines of "We've made iOS from OS X, and we've focused on dramatic innovation in our portable products, we now want to put more of that focus Back to the Mac", I cringed.

But I have to say what we've seen isn't that bad. I'll wait to pass judgement. We'll see how good Mission control is, although as an advocate of traditional (pre snow leopard" Exposé behavior I'll probably hate it.

Launch control looks great, but my favorite feature by far: Mac App Store. That's something I can get excited about. Prepare to see a wave of quality apps streaming in over the next few years through here, and lower prices.

EDIT: One more thing... Lion? Eugh.

So... Quite obviously, Mr Jobs lied when he said a couple of months ago that there wouldn't be an AppStore for the Mac.

Et voilá, there it is. Of course, only optional. At least for Snow Leopard. And maybe even still in the release version of Lion. After that? I wouldn't be surprised if it became the only option to get software for the Mac when 10.8 surfaces.

It's comforting that Linux and Windows run so well on my Apple hardware. Something tells me that I won't stay in Jobs's Brave New 1984 World for very much longer.

I can't wait to try Lion. I'm curious about App Store installing. As far i understand it is available only for some certified app, you can install programs in both ways.

That Mac App Store is a joke...

I mean sorry... What apps do you expect to get there? Whatever company is developing "real" applications for the mac wont give away 30% just for having the application placed in the app store so its easier to download and install it.

Maybe developers like the guys from Delicious Library will just put a free app into the app store which is nothing more than a link to the website where you can download the full application the usual way with one click :-D

Bo-ring

Yawn. That was downright boring. Not a thing that made me want to upgrade. Integration may be the future, but if I wanted an iPad I'd buy one.

I'm happy with the sneak peak, but I must admit I'm not satisfied if only because I WANTED TO SEE MORE!

I believe Steve when he says there's plenty more in store, and there definitely will be. Mission Control looks like a slick new entry, one that I'm excited to use, far too often now I'm using Spaces when I could be using Expose or one and the other.

Full-screen apps has great potential, and all the multi-touch goodness!

Mac App Store is also a nice addition, if only because it'll be an easy place to get apps and have any app updated. By no means a bad thing. Whoever thinks that is simply an idiot, it's another option, nothing wrong with choice.

Hoping that iWeb sees a refresh, disappointed nothing on iWork either.

Launchpad...I'm undecided. On one hand it could be a more visually pleasing way to access the current Applications stack most of us have, on the other it feels a bit too tedious with the iOS folders. Who knows though, maybe I'll love it.

MacBook Air...love the concept and where they're going, but not the hardware. The processor...yeech...and 2G of RAM is also disappointing. Now, I know it's not for professionals, but I would've liked to see those specs be slightly higher. Didn't like that Steve kept pointing out "higher than our current MacBook Pro"...dude, that's not a good thing, considering it's supposed to be less of a pro machine than the other!

iMovie looks great, maybe I'll ditch iMovie 06 HD with this release.

Hoping we see some radical changes to the iMac next year as well, juuust in time for a new one preloaded with Lion. :)

Let the continuation for Apple Monopolization continue.

More and More Apple wants to own each and every sector of the consumer experience. Much like Verizon wants its own app and ringtone store. apple does the same now.

Can't say i am happy about it, Apple exercises some censorship and absolute control over anything sold via itunes. and the new upcoming Mac "App" store for software doesn't seem any different.

edited out after being corrected.

ok, then lets go the extra mile for digital download stores on software. will the apple allow and authorize third party DRM controlled software be installed? hey i am starting to get worried about the consumer experience.

It used to be that computers and phones are all a user controlled world where you add the programs and software you want. no issues. from ANYWHERE. now Apple is making it harder to install software on iphone/ipad from any third source. you have to break open your software with potential unreliable jailbreak software. and i really dont want to do that.

is this the sort of thing we have to have in store for the future????

Personally.... i am starting to vibe that a Windows based computer may start looking a bit more.... open and less monopolistic than apple.

Crazy thoughts huh?

I like! The App store addition is a great idea. Lots of affordable Apps to customize your use of the Mac and a great infrastructure to attract a growing sea of developers to the Mac platform. Sounds like a win-win to me.

I really love the new Launchpad! Uh oh

Anyway, since App Store and FaceTime will be introduced for Snow Leopard users as well, the new features Lion introduces so far are only Mission Control, Launchpad and Full Screen View...

Not very impressed.

Lion seems interesting to me as well. I hope they keep letting you download apps from other sources after the Mac app store is released. I'm a bit worried that later they may decide to make it so you can't download apps from outside their store.

steve told that it isn't the only place where you can get apps. and apple will NEVER lock os x to the mac app store. NEVER!

Everyone should like this.

You absolutely HAVE to embrace iOS. It's the future.

Integration was bound to happen.

Okay but the elephant in the room that everyone is ignoring and not asking...

Will the MacBookAir, when running OS X Lion, run iOS apps AND Mac programs?

I'd kill to be able to run my iPad apps on my desktop and my Adobe products on my MacBookAir.... That'd be the killer portable device for me!!

No I don't. Not every user is a safari and iLife consumer. Engineers and scientists often make their own, specialised software that maybe a 100 people, if that, are interested in. Access to the operating and file system is essential for some of us. If Mac OS X is going to the way of iOS, then I am going (back) to linux.

We pretty much knew the iOS convergence would eventually happen. But from the demo, it seems like a really unholy union right now. Having the Dock along with Launch Pad seems redundant. An iOS-style app should behave just like a standard app. Why not just put them all in the Applications folder -- or get rid of that folder and have Launch Pad bring up all apps.

Um… what do you mean iOS style app? Launch Pad is just another way of launching your standard apps. Some users have more trouble than you might think navigating their way to the Applications folder. This should make it a bit easier for them. Why not?

For all the grumpy types who think the App Store is all about money in Apple's pocket...

Do you have any idea how much it simplifies distribution as an indy developer? There is A LOT to like about it. (Especially since we don't HAVE to use it.)

Bingo!People won't let go of this fantasy that the iTunes/app store is some kind of money printing machine for greedy Apple.Especially in the case of apps, where Apple bears all the hosting and distribution costs for FREE,the total profit on the operation is pretty small when compared to the rest of the company.
It is there for one reason and one reason only:

To Sell Hardware!

your attitude is pointless...

Love the Full Screen feature!

Launch Pad is pointless...

App Store is great but it isn't Lion exclusive so it is kind of irrelevant in this thread...

Mission Control is OK I guess... but certainly not wow...

I hope there is MUCH more to come in X.7 otherwise I might skip it just like skipped SL...

i never have missed flash...
iOS and its devices have simplified my digital life from day one...
iDont think you belong in theses forums...

Quoted for agreement (not necessarily truth, as it's more of an opinion from Indie Developer to Developer).

I've been waiting & wishing for this for over a year - simplified distribution of Upgrades is well worth it :)

AND, I should point out, Facetime would have totally been a "comes with the new OS" kind of feature in the past. So nice to see a free beta today instead of having them tie it to Lion.

I wonder if it will be beta until the release of Lion and then to get the released production version you'll have to upgrade to Lion. Only time will tell.

Jobs were asked, if i remember correctly, if next OSX was able to install app only from a dedicated store, controlled by Apple. I think Lion will let you install programs as usual and also put in your application folder app which you install from App Store. Don't worry.
