Well that's no help for when power goes out on an iMac. They should build them with 1 minute batteries so they can hibernate.

But it would still be a nice option to hibernate whenever you want.

How about something else cool, support of Windows drivers? :)

Or... Rather than equip every desktop with a battery (are you kidding me???), just let the users that it really bothers buy a UPS...

what's up their sleeves next?

so, what would y'all like to see in OS 10.7? it seems that 10.6 is just rebuilding the foundation for a more powerful OS, so i expect 10.7 to have many new features built atop of the new rewritten OS. so, i have two questions for y'all: what would you like to see in the next OS, and secondly, what cat will they name it after?

to be honest, i can't really think of any new features myself... i only go on this website when the new OS is about to be released, and they surprise me everytime. i just unintentionally upgraded from tiger to leopard when i bought my new iMac, and i don't see a huge amount of difference at all besides some linux-like features that i probably won't use (spaces); however, i thoroughly enjoyed tiger, and i'm thoroughly enjoying leopard.

i think they should save lynx for 10.10, so the package design could have three Xs... Mac os X version X lynX. i'm gonna go with cougar.

That's stating the obvious I think. Can't picture Apple releasing back-to-back OS's with just underlying tweaks.

The question is when 10.7 is planned? I'm a mac newbie so I'm not sure how much MS plays into their release strategy. With the rumored tablet coming soon, they may just let 10.6x be good enough for awhile.

If Windows 7 takes off it will just be called, "*****".

Probably about a year and a half to two years from now, that's the usual schedule. Most likely they'll start talking about it at WWDC in 2010, and announce a release date in mid-2011.

I think they prefer to let themselves be part of MS's release strategy, not the other way around. :)

In about 18 months, 10.7. What do you expect?

Now that SL has laid done the groundwork for tech such as 64-bit, GCD, and Open CL, and less bloat, what features would you expect 10.7 to have? What else can they add to the OS?

They will have a fully 64-bit kernel, it will be called Mac OS X 10.7 Northern Snow Leopard, and it will be $9.95, or free if you buy an iGadget Applet with a retail value of $30 or more. They will drop support for 32-bit Macs, and any mac sold before July 1, 2008. It will include support for multithreading, called Kennedy Space Center.

"The worlds most advanced operating system. On the moon!"

Oh, and they will discover that they have accidentally been compiling and shipping debug code in the OS for the last few years, and it will drop another 5GB. Plus, Software Updates will drop in size by 95% because Apple will have discovered a revolutionary new technology called Steve Jobs' Sub-file Differential Updating Binary Capsules, which send only the bytes that have changed between versions. Another breakthrough!

in b4 the lock

Like I said in the last one of these (that got locked), I want a real package manager + app store, and that marble/illuminous/whatver thing the rumor mill keeps saying we'll get. Oh hell, resolution independence and ZFS would be nice, but we all know we aren't getting those until hell freezes over.

I expect full 64 bit kernal support for all macs, a new interface, and all apple apps to go 64 bit (this is more directed at updates for individual apps rather than the os)

10.7 Lynx

10.7: Lynx

General feature upgrade, and a possible cosmetic upgrade such as a new looking dock, and an improved menubar with more capabilities.

What I hope for (at least one of these)
-Multi-touch interface
-Full Exchange support in Apple Mail like Outlook (integrated calendar, contacts, e-mail, tasks etc... even the ability to import from .pst) and a fully compatible Mobile Me alternative for Mac offices with a few Windows computers
-Easy Networking with Windows 7 (I actually have not tried with 10.6 yet but it is difficult using 10.5 mainly on the Windows 7 side)
-Motion video icons
-Open for people to install on any computer if the vendor provides drivers
-Allow for windows to be any shape (like was promised with either Copeland or Rhapsody in the mid 90's)
-3D interface for people with two properly positioned projectors and 3d glasses
-Usable voice commands (with HAL and TNG Enterprise voices);)
-real maximize button
-A way to totally disable time machine.

What I could care less about
-Another slightly refined interface
-Artificially making usable computers obsolete with little real gains

Well, being realistic...

I see 10.7 hitting around this time in 2011. I can't predict features like Spotlight or Expose that they would add, but here's what I'd assume will be there:

• Removal of Rosetta/Universal Binaries
• Core Duo support dropped, making 10.7 a 64-bit only OS.
• The rumored Marble interface (already, we see hints of it in Coverflow, Quicklook, inspector panels, the new dock's contextual menus, etc...)
• Blu-ray support at the OS level (required for DRM stuff)
• Greater Dock/Finder/Expose integration (if you follow the pattern from 10.4 > 10.6, to be expected)

At or around the same time, if it is not announced at the 9/9/09 event: iTunes X
• Rewritten in Cocoa, 64-bit app (dumps PPC support, but apple will let iTunes 8.x sync with current/new iPods?)
• Blu-ray support/playback
• Much, much better handling of iPod/iPhone media and syncing
• I really hope they take the SL approach and slim it down, it's really far too bloated for a music app

Why does everyone want an app store? I like things how they are. Plus, the iPhone app store is so cluttered with crap it only makes it harder to find the useful stuff. Plus, you're just giving central control of apps to Apple, which is already somewhat problematic on the iPhone.

Besides, just click the Apple menu and click "Mac OS X Software" or whatever it says (I can't check, SL is busy installing and I'm on my iPod), that's somewhat of an app store.

Apple is greedy. They drop support because they already have your money. They won't drop PPC support from iTunes until the cash flow from PPC customers dwindles. This has already been seen with 10.3. They kept it updated with QuickTime & iTunes long after they stopped doing security updates for it so they could make MOAR MONEYS!>@!

That's why I have the feeling that if they did do an intel-only rewrite, they'd keep 8.x around for legacy support, somewhat like how QT7 and QTX currently co-exist.

legal text for OS X LOLCAT

Found some more on the OS X LOLCAT edition, looks like another version of Snow Leopard perhaps. Incompatible.;)
