Except that they do; it's a one day setup, if that.

However in your original post you said that it took you two days to get it going, and you initially had problems getting it to work with 32 gb, and issues with wonky audio after waking the computer from sleep.

Those are the types of problems that professionals don't have time tinkering with when working for money.

You love your hackintosh? Fine. I've built hackintoshes myself in the past, built a G4-compatible one, had a 2gb Atom-based board running MacOS X (Snow Leopard days) and had MacOS running on Dell 9 Mini. Fun projects, but I get far better productivity from the maxed-out 6 core D500 can that I've had for 3+ years.

It's about time that Apple reached out to their customers and provided them a semblance of a roadmap. I really do hope that they will provide a powerful new Mac Pro that can keep up with the latest processor, graphics and throughput updates. The 6,1 was a case of overdoing form over function, the 450W footprint of the power supply severely crippled their ability to keep up-to-date their engineering.

Does anybody know if the SSDs in the Mac Pro pricing refresh are quicker like the ones in the 2016 MBP? I imagine not as there's no 2TB option but I was just hoping for some confirmation either way.
Not sure, but I would imagine newer, faster SSDs would have been touted as an additional incentive for potential buyers.

All of this makes me wonder how many pro users are going to purchase this essentially 3 year old hardware (albeit at better prices), full-well knowing that what they've really wanted all these years, is coming up in about a year?

This is giant fustercluck. There's no stall strategy right now or late parts or whatever else. It's exactly what it looks like. Apple hit a dead end, has nothing right now, and has to start over.

Peak Thin!

Well we know the "trashcan" design was...

Trash. Nicely referenced to the Spaceship Building though. From directly above. Maybe. Couldn’t even update it; only down-price it while they overthink the 7,1.

Does anyone know why there has been zero upgrade parts to this thing? Just releasing new GPUs would go along way to keep both new buyers and old customers happy. Apple and AMD seem to work closely together on a lot of things, so what's the problem?

Still overpriced for outdated technology.

It's now like being kissed before you're rapped, rather than just rapped.

If you are going to use a disgraceful metaphor, how about you Learn to spell?

As for your comment, depends on your skill. People always blame their tools. I made over 220k last year with my outdated technology doing 3D work for TVs and film. And I only have a 6 core D700 256gb

All these panical price cuts, slight speed bump and the whole reactions in media shows, that Apple (& Schiller) tries to save his ass.

Exactly, tools are just tools and one of the worst things I have encountered during my young age was "Do you know how to use a Mac?" And I was always like "Mac, PC, Linux they are all utter garbage if you ask me but I get my work done no matter what".

Due to better and cheaper hardware especially for rendering, compositing and finishing I choose PC currently but if you are not into horsepower Mac works a lot better than Windows on low-to-midrange specs. Like if you need VRAM Linux is your good choice, as long there is an app you need, because Windows reserves VRAM for itself and there is no way around it.

I agree. I use a renderfarm for all my rendering beyond tests. Who cares about 12 cores... I have 5000 CPUs an upload away and what would take 2 weeks to render even on the fastest 24 core PC takes 20mins on the farm.

The only thing that is important is time.

However for this bumpgrade I wish they had boosted the GPUs even if only by 30%

No.

Because no true "Pro" has time to mess-around finding drivers and haxies to make macOS work on non-Apple hardware.
[doublepost=1491331489][/doublepost]
This is a stopgap until the next system comes out in 2018, not a design refresh.
so how many pro shops do you know run nothing but these "servers"? 4,000 servers are all these overprice crappy machines? i would believe it more a corporate enterprise having all Dells but noway all of these machines.

This would apply if there was only a single Mac.

Instead, you can access and participate in the ecosystem with any of a number of Macs at different price points and with different specs.

Tell us about the different desktop macs. As far as I can tell, there is only one. The imac is a macbook pro with a large display. The mac mini is a macbook without a display. Neither use desktop grade hardware. So, while I agree you can join the ecosystem from a mobile platform, you can't do so if you want a modern desktop.

None of that has to do with dismissing the perspective of a member of this community by suggesting they need not buy. If the only reason someone is here is because they like, say, the magic mouse, and Apple makes a change to their preferred input device then they have every right to express their pride or fustration. Telling them not to complain because there are other mice available is wrong because this is the community interested in it, and a thread was made for them to do so. If they complain in the wrong thread we should point them in the right direction, but we shouldn't be dismissing their passion by telling them to ignore something they clearly care about.

It may have to do with the fact that it hasn't had many driver updates in general. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any of the current generation NVIDEA cards work with macos.

Honestly? For most Mac users? No. Most would be better served with a Macbook or Pro or an iMac.

For those that use pro-level apps frequently and need lots and lots of RAM? Yeah. It's not a bang for the buck, but passable and Apple has finally (!!!) given content-creators a roadmap.

this is probably the best they could do for now. it's a shame that the 2013mp will stay outdated even longer and because of that, overpriced. but it's understandable that they won't make a mainboard redesign now just to include new i/o ports. as they say: it's for the people who still need one in the meantime, more of a legacy thing. i think it's a good sign they did it the way they did (admitting they were wrong, giving an early warning, discounting the old machines probably as much as possible,... ) - but they still have to deliver.

it probably should have happened sooner, but what's done is done. as it stands now, i see no reason to replace my 6 year old hackintosh with a current gen imac or macpro, but it's still ripe for an update. starting to save money now.

I would agree that it is also fair to say that Apple as a company have brought these bad feelings and distrust on themselves.

They did allow Mac Pro (and Mac Mini) to wither on the vine. They were too clever by half with their "innovation" of the 6,1 Mac Pro, they engineered with a thermal footprint that they could not even provide upgraded graphic cards for!

I'm guessing that Apple only started their Mac Pro redesign a couple of weeks ago, literally.

A power supply with a 450W footprint was a mistake. A proprietary design in motherboards was a mistake. Arrogantly assuming that people would not want to speed up their hardware over a five year period was a grave mistake. Keeping the prices fixed for 3 1/2 years was high hubris. With this device, they engineered themselves into a corner and created this as a solution for a problem that Mac professionals never had.

Apple engineered themselves into a corner with the design. The power supply has a 450W footprint, so any cards that they use requires custom engineering to fit the speed of the graphic processors and its components to fit the power requirements of the can. It creates unnecessary engineering that is cost prohibitive.

"Rapped" eh? I know what you meant to type, and talk about the worst analogy ever.

Because actually being assaulted is JUST like having the -choice- to purchase a product you can read up on.

Thanks a lot, MacRumors, for your Mac news coverage today. I'd suggest all the people that dislike this news to calm down. Yes, Apple could have a brand new modular Mac Pro today if they had planned a wise strategy at the right time, but, from the 1-year timeframe they seem to be talking about, they likely started to work in the next Mac Pro very recently (you shouldn't need more than half a year to design a modular Mac Pro, so this means they just began designing it).

Also, calm down about prices: A Mac Pro will always start at $3000. You're not going to get a Mac Pro for $1800, because it wouldn't be a Mac Pro. It would be an iMac or a Mini, but not a Pro. I paid over $3000 for my new Hackintosh last Summer (I wanted to buy a $4000 Mac Pro, but there wasn't one with updated components at that time, so Apple lost my money, and I -temporarily- switched to a Hackintosh, although I hope to buy a new Mac Pro some time in the future, when my Hack gets old and surpassed by newer Mac Pros).

This is a very nice day for all Mac fans, because we thought the Mac was dead. So please, enjoy this day, thank MacRumors for the great coverage they did, and wait for new Mac models, and buy them when they are released.

I'm not so sure that the computer they are designing will cost $3K and upwards. Apple seems serious this time about creating a machine for professionals, so it surely won't be cheap, but they could release a base model with more limited specs in the $2K range. With a modular design, Apple could create a system that can have all sorts of configuration options. I would love to see a configuration option suited for macOS Server that is closer to the $2K price.

I agree that it is nice to see some real Mac news, and I believe Apple when they say they are committed to the Mac. If they weren't, they certainly would not have pre-announced the Mac Pro.

I hope they keep making Macs, it would be a mistake for them to quit.
I Love the Iphone but buy them partly because I like they way they integrate with the Mac.
I would think most people would jump ship if they stopped making the Mac?

Don't worry... Apple isn't going to stop making Macs. Plan on a new Mac Pro in 2018 (probably at the very end of the year, though! lol) and lots of other great Mac products in the coming years.

That's true. But it's ALSO true there are NO "Pros" left on the Mac PERIOD. PERIOD! (and don't embarrass yourself by claiming to be a pro yourself; no true Pro on Earth would use this POS)

Frack Apple (and especially Tim Cook) for destroying the Mac. The sad thing is I was angry with Steve Jobs for killing the Mac after the iPhone came out, but at least he saw some utility in a "truck". Tim Cook doesn't even know what a fracking computer is, let alone how to lead in that market. He admits to preferring an iPad to a real computer. He's a disgrace to the name APPLE COMPUTER, which is why they had to remove the "COMPUTER" part. I wish they'd sell the Mac line to a company that gives a crap about computing, maybe even Microsoft (they keep stepping up their game while Apple throws it all away).

Apple seems committed to the Mac platform to me, and I know plenty of professionals who use Macs. I don't know a lot who use Mac Pros, though, because their needs are met with MacBook Pros, iMacs, and even Mac minis.

No, my dear! The iMac is not a laptop computer.

That's why people laugh at you as try to balance it on your knees at Starbucks.

You are trying to be funny. It is made with mobile components, not desktop components. Its a macbook pro that you leave on your desk.

Ryzen isn't even a glimmer of a contender for a Mac. Sorry, it doesn't have the IO guts needed to drive multiple SSDs and TB3 ports (which is all Apple uses now) not by a long shot. With current chips that much IO isn't even possible, and Ryzen 7 is the top of the specs. It does have nice thermals and power requirements along with RX GPUs for Desktop parts.

Lack of TB3 is artificial and more do with Intel licensing. We even missing out on Xconnect. Also the IO array on this thing is more a byproduct of the garbage form factor. As a designer I would trade TB for a ryzen 1800x and a form factor with actual internal bays any day.

iMacs are my travel computer but never sit on my lap. As I don’t compute in transit and only move between a limited number of destinations, I prefer to sprinkle iMacs at my destinations and travel with storage drives for an almost seamless big-screen experience after an hour’s synch. They are newer but slower than my 5,1; mid-spec versions as high-end usually require pre-ordering. I get to save myself the hassle of the airport security shuffle plus sleep away interminable flights. Besides, the coffee is always better at home.
