Hallo all,

Well im playing the waiting game for me mac pro. Just wondering how long it took for urs to be delivered? Ordered it friday, which is a pain with the easter weekend . It said 4 days for it to be built, then 3 to 7 days. Does that actually mean 7 days minimum or did any of you guys receive your mac pro before the date specified?

I was quoted 3-4 weeks for mine. I got it in 2! That was back in February. I ordered 4x4GB of memory and waited 3 weeks for that, and then cancelled the order and another company overnighted them to me for less money. I'd like to get about 16GB but I have other priorities right now.

Good luck with your machine. You will love it. Mine is the fastest machine I've ever used.

Mine arrived today just as the Fedex tracker said it would. The wife even signed for it. It's sitting next to me on top of the desk almost finished with the full extended diagnostic that I'm running. When it's done, I'll install the 8gb additional ram and 2tb drives and reinstall the OS. Gotta get some more coffee for a fun night.

Mine is showing as 'out for delivery'

Same! Our Mac Pro's shipment progress seems to be identical from the day we ordered it. Wonder who's gonna get it first....

Playing GT5 Prologue as i wait for it...

I spent 2 hours last night trying to cable-tidy all the cables from my speakers.

It would have been easy if I'd had a desk that had a back panel, but alas, it wasn't :p

Anyway, I ran xBench last night as a trial: 228

It's here!

Just arrived with TNT. Only downside is that the EyeTV I ordered and which was in same shipment has gone missing.

At least the Mac is with me!

Kev

My Mac Pro is due to arrive tomorrow as well (UK) :)

Also, just want to add that UPS wanted £53 customs charge for my RAM that I ordered from OWC

Swings and roundabouts, eh.

I hope you questioned the amount, because customes on computer parts is just 17.5 percent, even if you have to pay it on the whole order - in delivery - should not be more than £45, your a fool i you paid this.

The last desktop i had was a windows PC i built myself. Its a joke compared to the mac pro! It's made of really nice super thick aluminium and the internals are so tidy! My PS3 is actually noisier than the mac pro...

My bose companion speakers are amazing too.

So after the first night:
1 of the 2 drives that I got from Newegg is faulty. It makes a drive head smacking against something clicking noise but still boots up and seems to write something. I took it out and just used my identitcal data drive as the boot drive.

The 10gb ram seems to pass tests so far, running it again today after pulling out and swapping the drives.

The superdrive is noisy as hell and I can't find the thread that people talked about it. It's an optiarc 7170A and when it spins the install disc it's louder then the fans at full speed. Anyone able to point me to the thread for this issue? I need to figure out if I should get Apple to swap the superdrive or the machine. :(

Same here. A lot of drives are noisy, though ive never heard them to be that noisy. Seeing as theyre only £15, im not gonna bother to try and get a replacement- i just spent about 7 hours setting this thing up!

PICS!:

Sweet pics, sweet machine :) You'll really dig those Bose Companions too, they sound incredible!

You like Aperture? I tried it and just didn't really like the interface that much - I'm using Lightroom :)

And you're right, the Mac Pro is just about silent - the only times I've heard mine is if a disc is spinning up in the CD tray, otherwise you can barely hear it, even in a quiet room :)

Aperture 2 is a massive improvement over 1.5. It's a heck of a lot faster, though i guess thats partly going from a macbook pro to a mac pro. Dual screen aperture is great too- photo library on one screen and full screen preview on the other!

Question on installing RAM and HDs

Guys or gals...

I got my machine delivered yesterday...3.0 with stock 2x1gb RAM...OWC's order will be in this afternoon with 4x2gb RAM and 2x1TB drives. Are you guys installing the RAM and Drives yourself. I am pretty computer savvy, just don't want to break anything...I was going to drop the Pro, RAM and HD's as well as a new copy of Windows to the Mac shop to have them do the installs...but it looks like most of you are doing it yourself.

I don't need directions...I can do a search and from what I have heard, the info is in the instructions (I haven't opened my box yet as I was going to drop it all at the Mac shop)...it looks like most of you are doing it yourself. Should I attempt the same?

I'm sure the memory is pretty straight forward...it is the HD installs and the Windows (Boot Camp) that have me concerned!

Thanks,

Jeremy

Installing everything was really easy. The hard drive cages needed quite a strong pull to yank out, but other than that, it's a load easier than upgrading any other computer.

Mac arrived

Got the Mac Pro today and am typing this on it. It is a refurb 2.8 standard config. It is much quieter than the G4 Quicksilver it replaces, the fans I can barely hear, the hard disk is much noisier when it whirrs and clicks. I got a ADC-DVI converter so I can use my old 17" Apple Display with this and it works perfectly.
The new keyboard is a strange beast, so thin and there is not much travel in the keys. Safari 3 seems much quicker than Safari 2 I ran before.
Word of caution to an people switching you need to turn the firewall on in the System Preferences it is off by default! I am using the application level preference and also turned on stealth mode in the advanced pane.

Let's just say that even an Information Worker persona can do the install. Yes, it's that easy. I think the hardest thing for me was finding a #1 phillips screwdriver as #2 (standard for most home put it together projects) is too fat to fit in the drive bay holders.

the hard disk is much noisier when it whirrs and clicks.

The noise level difference between the 320gb (seagate 7200.10 Barracuda) drive and the replacement 1tb (seagate 7200.11 Barracuda) is night and day. The drive seeks on the default drive were very noisy and noticeable since the mac pro is a foot from my head on top of my desk. The replacement drives are very quit and if I concentrate I can hear the head seeks. The 8800gt on the other hand has a fan that you can hear as pretty low volume white noise. At least it's not varying.

Here are some images of my mac pro....

Just about there...

I got mine completely installed...

As mentioned earlier, the RAM and HD installs are incredibly easy with simple to follow instructions in the manual...Thanks for the vote of confidence, I saved a C note and a 3-5 day wait for a 10 minute process:)

Last but not least is the inevitable issue with installing Windows with Bootcamp. The setup screen obviously sees all three of my drives, I will list in a second and I have been on the phone with Apple Care for 2 hours trying to figure out if we should push install or not...as my screen is not matching up with their "example screen."

MY XP setup screen looks something like this

953868 MB Disc 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]
F: Partition 1 (Unknown) 953870 MB (953869 free)
953868 MB Disc 0 at ID 1 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]
G: Partition 1 (Unknown) 953870 MB (953869 free)
953868 MB Disc 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]
H: Partition 1 (Unknown) 200MB (200 free)
C: Partition 2 (Unknown) 953670 MB (953669 free)

Any ideas which drive to install it on? On the example page, one of the partitions does say (Fat 32) Bootcamp...which obviously, none of mine say. Their example is on C:

Myself and the tech are scared to lose the OSX info...any ideas?

Jeremy

...just realized what a ridiculous question that was to ask...

Nevermind...the Apple Tech and I decided to take a guess...Windows is loading now...worst thing that happens (1 in 3 shot), I lost OSX and have a re-install on a different drive!

This is the King of Machines...Congrats on everyone's new toy...you WILL enjoy it!
