See now..... when you give your one example you make a point for that person only wanting one. Rather than the very general statement that Mac Pro's are unnecessary. I'm here to tell ya, there are a bunch of people who cannot substitute an iMac for a Mac Pro and I am one of them.

Possible is you have no deadlines. Another word comes to mind also....painful.

EXACTLY! I don't know how many times I'm rendering right up to a deadline and final edit choices can be made or not made based on what I have time to do. This guy is just spouting stuff off the top of his head, and it's painfully obvious he has no real world experience with video editing or any other high end work. He's like some kind of government "Czar" who based on academia wants to tell those of us who work and live in the real world what we can and cannot have and what we "need."

In short, he's clueless.

Am I the only Protools guy who is waiting for the new MP?
I see alot of video people waiting for one, but not a single audio guy.

Any Illustrators out there? I am desperate for a new machine and constantly run out of Horse Power working in maxed out PS layers..

HP Z820 offers up to 512 GB RAM and somebody is arguing that a 16GB Macbook is all the world needs. It will be 1TB in, say, a year and there is certainly a need for it. More memory and more computing power can solve larger problems. Why not launch the Mac Pro with 1TB tomorrow?
Anybody who has a pun for 1TB & Tim? Simply call it the Mac iT? Or spell it out, iTerra - sounds down to earth.

It would be "iTebi", not "iTera". ;)

I tried to use a newer top of the line iMac to work while the logic board of my MP was being replaced. An iMac can absolutley NOT take the place of a MP for any real task. If you are using iMovie maybe.....

Time is money and waiting for a computer to finish a task costs me time, which in turn costs me money. I am happy to pay more for a computer that saves me time. Just because you don't need a high performance computer doesn't mean people who do only think they do.
Absolutely correct. For those for whom rendering time is money, the choice will either be a revitalized Mac Pro or a non-Apple product. Although I don't need or use a Mac Pro myself, I certainly hope Apple does continue to cater to those with higher-end needs, so long as it is economically viable to do so.

So 30 pages and nothing new... not even a new mac of any sorts...
Dairymple seemed pretty sure that something was in the pipes. I believe him. Possibly an announcement will be made at WWDC?

Been waiting and waiting... Never owned a MAC and decided to switch so I can collaborate with my friends who use Protools and Logic. I'm currently using Sonar x1 (which is fine but no one I know is using it!!!). I'm kind of losing interest in a mac pro now, Apple doesn't seem to care about its users at all, no news and no reassurance for its loyal customers. This is making me think that they don't deserve my hard earned cash. Yes, I could buy one of the current models and get to work right now but I would be feeling stupid if a new one came out short after. An imac is not what I want. I've been looking at new pc's instead, which are cheaper. I think Apple would sell more Macpros if their prices were a bit more realistic, memory prices scare me!!! The memory that comes with the mac pros in now outdated anyway, so shouldn't be that expensive. Hard drives are double the price and SSD's must be made of gold. OK, I could buy 3rd party memory from Crucial but it would be nice if I could have my tower delivered and ready, straight out of the box. The same goes for other components. I really don't know what to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Apple are upsetting loyal customers as well as future ones... Is it really a good idea to join this club of worried customers right now????

Hmmmm...... Apple prides itself in being an innovator; yet they are far behind the curve when it comes to the Mac Pro.... I can't understand it.

I am sick of fanboys defending Apple no matter what they do, or are perceived to be doing.

How does anyone know what I need. Mac Pro has not kept up with my families needs. I work in the photo world on still and videos. I know colleagues who push their HP's much harder than I can push a Mac Pro.

My wife is medical research epidemiologist and she needs all the number crunching she can get her hands on.

It is my belief that third-party software writers are focusing more on other platforms again for these applications. Why is it so hard for Apple to keep up.Tim cook said at a recent tech conference that Apple's goal is to make the best products. Obviously, there is a need for the Mac Pro.

Many people only need an iMac or a MBP or even just an MBA. These are beautiful computers and get the work done. I own an iMac, two MBPs and other Apple products. They are wonderful, but for my needs and my wife's needs, they are substantially inferior to what a high end computer would do for us.

Does Apple normally reveal hardware at WWDC? As far as I understand, it is mostly a software conference.

Totally, UTTERLY waiting for new Mac Pros. It's not running Pro Tools that's the issue. It's running several instances of Kontakt and soft synths, which are loading large, multi-gigabyte libraries into RAM and accessing them constantly, while also accessing separate drives for audio recording and playback. The fast bus architecture and multi-drive bays of the Mac Pro's is essential to this workflow and is nigh-impossible to recreate with even the most robust pre-Thunderbolt iMac. I do have high hopes for Thunderbolt but it hasn't yet proven itself in the industry.

Let's not forget the higher RAM possibilities, PCIe slots, greater VRAM and video solutions for multi-screen arrays, video switching, etc. I need a separate monitor simply for playback of a synced Quicktime, in addition to a minimum of two for the editing/mixing consoles.

Mac Pros are some of the finest tools made thus far for audio, music&post, and editing. I can assemble a simulacrum from other parts, but Apple was doing just fine. Here's hoping they'll update it soon.

This is looking pretty good right about meow.

I've only seen one "fanboy" on this thread defending Apple's lack of updates to the Mac Pro, and that one poster was clearly ignorant of the needs of some pro users.

The rest of us are with you in saying that the current state of the Mac Pro is downright embarrassing.

Having said that, it is only recently that Intel made an upgrade with server-class processors possible. I was just hoping that Apple would have immediately announced upgraded Mac Pros alongside Intel's introduction of those processors. Heck, Apple used to get first dibs on Intel's newest processors while the chip maker was ramping production up enough to serve the broader market.

Now the only thing that keeps up my hopes of Apple continuing the Mac Pro line is Dairymple's assertion that Apple will not abandon the Mac Pro. I hope that we hear something soon, because I suspect the exodus of professionals is already underway, and the bleeding could soon reach a point beyond which making the Mac Pro would no longer be economically viable for Apple due to the lack of a market for the machines.

Graphics and video editing (final cut, premiere pro) is easily possible on the latest models of iMac and MBP. I'm sure there are people who legitimately need all the power of the MP and will benefit from the next speed bump. But I think that group of people is growing smaller by the year.

You have to be kidding me...

Go try and edit a video with a 4k .R3D timeline on one of those iMac's and tell me if you can even PLAY it. That's what my job consists of day to day. My 8 Core 20gb Ram with SSD struggles to play it back at 1/2 res in Premier.

I have high hopes that Apple will reveal an updated Mac Pro @ WWDC. If I'm not mistaken, Apple wouldn't announce that they're updating the Mac Pro unless they planned on releasing it right after they announce it would they not? If you announce a new MP is imminent but don't release it right away, that would negate any new MP sales. That's what my logic is of Apple's business plan anyways.

This coupled with the hype that Apple products generate and the loyalty of Apple users means they have no reason to announce before they can sell them. There have been issues in E5 Xeon workstations being made available from large vendors - they have all had delays until the end of May. Expect Apple to announce something soon.

I just spec'ed out the only E5-26xx Dell I could find. An R620 rack mount. Dual 2690s and 32GB of RAM later, and I'm looking at a $10k machine.

Nice hardware, and without a doubt useful to some folks, but let's face it, at those prices we're talking about a seriously small niche market.
