should be nice! "The fastest mac we ever build"

That's a fast system!

I said this when the X-Serve was axed, and it applies now as well.

Apple should partner with a third party for these high-end, low-volume systems. Make a deal with HP, and support Apple OSX on a couple of models of the Z series (Z400/Z600/Z800).

(At the same time, support any Nvidia and ATI GPU that has the necessary level of OpenCL features.)

MacRumors, why not any coverage on:

Was wondering this myself, but I suppose it is far more important to cover the story of how the prototype ipad had 2 connectors.

Seriously? Not even worth mentioning it's so unlikely.

In any case, I wonder when Apple will put us out of our misery and get it over with?

Because everyone knows the Mac Pro is dead. Pleading for them to waste time and money manufacturing new models is not going make any difference. iMac does everything you need and is packed with powerful Core i7 processors, up-to 16GB RAM, dual SSD, and a large, gorgeous display to enjoy your contents.

First off, STOP telling anyone WHAT THEY NEED! Only THEY know what THEY need or want. Second, if the Mac Pro were dead, then why hasn't macrumors run that story?

That is such a stupid statement it's almost beneath response.

Have you ever even run a pro app like after effects? A single processor system like the imac with limited ram capability and slow video card will never be the machine that I need.

You simply don't have a clue.

Irrespective of the MP being dead or not, how you can simply state that all you need is x.

No one knows better (within reason) the user as to what they need.

However, the iMac is nice and it's an excellent tool, depending on what your user requirements.

I personally love the amount you can configure the MP and also, dual same monitors, something that is quite hard and expensive to achieve with an iMac.

Anyhow, let's hope we are not all still asking if it's dead or not, same time, next year!

That doesn't mean Apple is going to keep making the Mac Pro. You'll always have the option of moving your After Effects workflow to a Windows based workstation. At least then, you'll have choice in the hardware you run it on.

So because MacRumors hasn't picked up on a story it can't be true? I hope you are at least making some plans for the possibility of the Mac Pro being removed from Apple's current product line end of this quarter. Obviously until it officially happens you can live in denial. But my suggestion is make some plans and start thinking about alternative options such as the iMac, especially if you want to stay with OS X.

I know it hasn't been stated nearly enough for you already, but an iMac in this situation just won't cut it. A quad core i7 isn't nearly enough for someone who needs at least a 12 core Xeon processor. An iMac is, at best, entry level for people like that.

You are right about the denial thing though. By this point, I'd say that most people should consider ponying up for a Windows/Linux workstation, and assume the Apple pro market is all but abandoned.

Oh I understand this and am actually looking into it as we speak, as sad as that is. However the nimrod statement that "the imac gives me everything I need" is just asinine.

Actually I do think the odds are greater for discounting, but the current imac won't work for me. I will be interested in what specs are on the new imacs, but I'll have to wait and see. I think there is only a very small chance to none, of a new product to replace the Mac Pro, but a moderate chance for a spec bump to the current one. I hope we know by the end of June.

I realize the imac will never be 12 cores, but personally I'd be happy with 6. Now that is also unlikely at best there. But, I do think Apple will at least attempt to fill a Mac Pro void with something higher performance and that just remains to be seen as does the possible MP updating itself.

I don't see keeping an iMac for some tasks and using Windows for other tasks as a workable option, though correct me if I'm wrong because if there is an easy way to swap chunks of data and workflows between the systems, I'd be all ears. At this point, I am having enough trouble just figuring out how to migrate my data to Windows...

I think the analysis in this Forbes piece is on the money. When I switch, I will likely go whole hog, and stop purchasing Apple products. I was sitting with a big group of artist media folks the other day telling them about the quandary, and how I was thinking of switching to Windows. It was amazing how the herd mentality quickly shifted the discussion from how much better Apple is, to how Apple may not actually be the coolest computer company in the world anymore. When one goes, ten others are likely to follow, and the gadgets may suffer an eventual dent in sales as well. In my case, I have no doubt that will happen. The Forbes article picks up on that a little, plus a really good point about R&D trickle down effect...

My current Macbook Pro has 2GB RAM. So the next one should have 10 times more, say 16, which OWC currently offers. Buying an iMac with 16GB??? No point. I would be happy with a Mini Countryman - i.e. a maxi-version of the Mac Mini, taking some 12 cores and 100GB+, but without all the expansion slots.

Perhaps everything that *you* need, but it's not enough for many power users.

My current home Dell mini-tower (or mid-tower, depending on some subjective points) has 24 GiB,and I'm starting to look seriously at replacement options - because 24 GiB is too small!

I'll repeat my statement - Apple should partner with a company like HP that produces cutting-edge workstations/servers, and validate Apple OSX on a reasonable subset of their products.

Apple's Maiden NC data center doesn't use Apple servers, so why not give Apple OSX power users the option to use Apple-approved third party systems?

I kind of hope you're trolling. If you're so dim as to figure that computing has reached an absolute ceiling, I'm not sure what to say to you. At one point 32MB of ram was a lot, and a 1GB hard drive required a 3U form factor. Not being able to see past your own needs shows nothing more than a lack of insight.

Who said anything about keeping an iMac for some tasks ?

BTW, sharing data should be transparent, as long as you didn't lock that data into a particular vendor's proprietary format. ;)
