Think little bird.why are we still using spinning discs? they are FAR to slow!

Think little bird.Cheap. Cheap.

It doesn't work that way. SSD won't be widely adopted until the capacities hit current mechanical level capacities (at least 1TB, which is about to release), and the cost/GB is low enough people would be willing to buy it over mechanical units.if we got rid of spinning, SSDs would have to be manufactured more - their prices would come down!
as if that would happen![]()

Until that happens, SSD's going to remain a performance/niche market, and mechanical will still fill the need for cheap, mass storage.
Seriously... I don't get people who are willing to wait for things, I find usually people who can wait are usually those who don't need a MacPro but fancy one - make sense?
The 1TB Colossus has been announced, and has even had an update on the cost ($2200USD rather than the original estimate of $2500USD). But I'm not aware of any seller with any ATM. Really soon though (supposed to be this month).yea.i know

it sucks.. people are so cheap. the performance from the SSDs isn't that impressive anyway (as Tess has shown) for some RAIDs anyway.
i thought 1TB has already come out? i know there are 2.5" 1TB HDD's that just came out recently, but the SSD would cost about 20x more no doubt.

will definitely see an update or price decrease on MP this yerar
Going by Apple's more recent history on the MP though, it would suggest otherwise. So it looks more like the next CPU (Gulftown) to hit before a model update.you would want to hope so! the prices are so darn high!![]()

You'd be surprised. From a parts POV, it didn't change that much. Look at it this way. The CPU's on the '08's were $862 for the 2.8GHz part last I looked. The base Quad chip is maybe $300 for the 2.66GHz part. So at least a $500 savings there. Only one chipset, rather than two (Northbridge & Southbridge). Those savings could pay for the new board setup (logic board + CPU/memory daughterboard).indeed, i can see the reasons for the price increase - new CPU, faster RAM, new case design etcetc (and they have to make money for the unibody designs) - do you still think it will increase?

Now there's been arguments the sales quantities were/have expected to drop off, and caused the price increase. Personally, that may have a role, but it's not all of it. Greed certainly has it's place.
As for the laptops, they've dropped the prices. They do sell more of them, but that seems to be greed mixed in as well. Apple wants high margins, which translates into high dividends.
And BTW, some of their recent moves, seems to indicatate (rather clearly), Apple's trying to create their own manufacturing system from fab to finished product (at least on the portable, and later, laptop market). So that would include iPod's, iPhone's, MacMini, and even the iMac. That only leaves the MP to rely on other sources, which is currently Intel (CPU to board).
Greed always wins out in the end once the barriers come down or are outright violated without reprocussions (morality, legality, or deregulation).funny how two different conversations end up with greed...
the MPs haven't been selling as well which would indicate a slight increase, but not a massive one. have you seen a price-build comparision between the old and new machines? i havent - but it would be interesting to see.
good point about their iPods/laptops - remember when apple aquired the mobile CPU company? they might put them in their iPhones whenever they get their act together - that would be good but would give them more power haha.

It was PA Semi, and it seems obvious they want to make their own chips, as it can allow more control, and custom features other vendors don't have. Not a bad way to go, as the QC & functionality will hopefully improve. If not, I'd hope the consumers have enough sense not to buy the products.![]()
It's been in MR on several occasions, and not that long ago.lucky somebody has a memory! it will probably end up like the old days with the PPC chips. hopefully they are smart enough to be innovative with it. either way i wont be purchasing an iPhone so it doesnt bother me.
It's been in MR on several occasions, and not that long ago. Some articles on talent (chip designers) as well, which combining the two, gives a strong indication they do want to make their own parts.
And no, I won't be purchasing an iPhone either. I don't own an iPod, but I've given a couple as gifts.
I'd hope the consumers have enough sense not to buy the products.![]()
Thank god someone had this thread open because I was thinking the same thing. I need a Mac Pro right now, but I just want to know if it's worth waiting for a new Mac Pro update.
Just got a Quad 2.93 and I wish there was some kind of upgrade insurance because I will be upset if there is a speed boost.
There was a strong consensus that there would not be an upgrade when I pulled the trigger a month ago but the recent chip releases (i.e. Xeon 3500 series at 3.33 Ghz) is worrying me.
probably worth investing in a 2007/2008 MPsaves you heaps for not much more of an increase.
why not put the new quad in there when it comes out? or a current core i7 CPU??
