that depends on where you are viewing OLED. In any semi bright light, it casts color. There are multiple types of OLED, one is better in bright light... cant remember the designation.

Ive done more research on monitors (and macs) than normal people should, since early CRT days where the best option was Apples 13" RGB display... and BW monitors were serious considerations, Radius and NEC were kings. I never bought cheap displays for my studio. Even my home Cube a viewsonic 21" Trinitron People forget that CRTs had zero adjustability too. We did color match proofs in studio... I setup a 9600/350 as a print server, with Epson 3000 and Epson 5500 PRO inkjets -- ink was $$$$. damn 1000BT switch was $500.

there are three times, lg with WOLED, samsung with QD-oled, and the more professional one and more rare is Joled. my experience with Joled and QD-oled has zero color regardless of angle of viewing nor lighting circumstances since the pixels simply just switch off.

I have the Studio Display and it works nicely with other Apple devices. Paid the $400 height-adjustable stand and it looked amazing.

Well, there is competition, which is good. Dell’s older UltraSharp 6K U3224KB starts at $2500. LG’s upcoming Thunderbolt 5 competitor for that, the UltraFine 6K 32U990A is likely to be in the same range.

The ASUS ProArt 6K PA32QCV is thought to be somewhat less, like $1800 or so.
Thanks. The first two are outside my budget, but I've been following the ASUS ProArt 6K PA32QCV, waiting for its actual release so we can see user evaluations, and to make its way to stores so I can see it in person. Its contrast ratio isn't very high at 1000:1, HDR 600, but other than that, its specs look good.

If they don't let you fiddle on the floor, you can always buy it, hook it up at home and try it out. Did that with my 34" widescreen for my 2012 MBP and did not have to return it.

BenQ PD3200U is 31.5" 4K has been great for my coding/CAD/text/documents/computer sim/2D graphics on my mac mini and studio. The current version is the 3205 at BestBuy for like 600 USD. That could be an option for you. I don't watch movies on mine, though. But that is a 138 PPI vs. the 218 PPI you are looking for.
Thanks, I've been considering doing an at-home trial that way. It might be the best way to answer my own question as to whether I'd be fine with 32 inches at 4K, or if I'd "need" a 6K.

I'll probably want to drop my wish for a monitor with contrast and brightness specs that make it decent for occasionally watching movies and TV shows, so that I'll have more options to choose from, especially considering I already have a nice 42 inch, 4K Sony OLED TV about two feet to the left of my computer desk that I normally use for movies and TV, and increasingly for YouTube via screen mirroring from my Macbook.

Can anyone tell me if it is even possible to have Apple release their next ACD with specs like this:

1. 120HZ
2. 5K
3. OLED
4. Promotion

No OLED, would be mini LED, 120 is "promotion". The bandwidth to do 5K @ 120 needs TBolt 5. So even if they intro one today, only Mini PRO, studio and MBPs could use it... and bet the cost is $2K+.

I switched to an inexpensive 32" LG Ultrafine display. there is no way I could ever go back to something smaller. a 24" iMac is a laughable toy

Even 27” is too small if you’ve used a 30” before. More screen realestate = more productivity + useability

ah yes the classic "retina purest" argument, do you actually sit like a foot away from the monitor and try to count each individual pixels?

i and many others went from true retina resolutions, to 4k 32inch and unless you try to zoom in and count the pixels, you won't miss it.
I have a M2 Max Studio coupled with a Lenovo 2k monitor. I sit maybe 2 feet from the screen. My question is: Is the text too small from that distance with a 32in 4k display?

Dongles and the associated angst that goes with them are not something I particularly consider when choosing a computer. I choose a computer based on the ports I need. Multi use ports can be anything you want. No idea why some people prefer a computer to be ‘stuck’ with ports that may or may not be used. Up to you - get what you need, but I like a nice card reader, so I buy a nice one that reads the cards a I need and the I plug it in to whatever computer I want. If my Mac had an sd card slot it would be wasted for me as I don’t need an sd card port.

1 and 4: Rumors are that Apple are designing a 90Hz monitor. Best guess will be that Apple will redefine "Promotion" for desktop monitors to mean "anything over 75Hz" and will brand a 90Hz monitor as having "Promotion".

2. They've painted themselves into the "Retina" corner, so unless they decide to release a "budget" monitor, they aren't likely to lower than 5k.

3. Better buy AppleCare if they do adopt OLED. As others have said, burn-in may not be as much of a problem nowadays (reviews vary on that), but you can be sure that Apple will only offer burn-in coverage if you buy their extended warranty.

i use 2048x1152 resolution, a step up from 1080 and it serves me fine. mind you i'm doing word doc and pdf for 6-7 hours a day.

Edward Tufte (data visualization guru) said at one of his seminars that one of the best things you can do for your workers is to have more visual real estate. I have found this to be true, my writing desk (a drafting board rotated horizontal) lets me spread out documents and bring them in and out of writing area instantly as I go through ideas. Same with my 31.5" display, I have 1 primary work window (thanks Rectangle Pro) then a bunch of sub-windows that get used 5% of the time but when they do, it is a quick switch to them and back. I used to have a 2nd display, but it was just a little more clunky to access the 2nd display in terms of switching windows, head/eye position, etc, so it was a blessing in disguise when a houseguest broke that monitor and made me master use of the 31.5". I guess if I sat closer to the display a 27 would work, that is a personal comfort choice, I sit at 25-26 inches.

Long way to explain that I AGREE more screen real estate = more productivity + useability.

As far as pixelation, it is just fine for me (subjective) and objectively, from
https://www.tools.rodrigopolo.com/display_calc/,
"Your device is NOT retina at an average view distance of 11” having 139.87ppi, but it is perceived as retina when seeing from 24.58” which is the recommended distance for prefect viewing."
