Reimagine the 'G4 lamp' iMac as an "iMac Studio" AIO computer with large OLED floating display, rear ports on the hemisphere base with a few front-facing, ala Mac Studio. The computer would focus on the floating display aesthetic and good audio quality coming from the HomePod-like dome base, which houses in addition a Mac mini-like computer with fan and internal PSU.

Overheating from the G4 iMac era is a long-solved problem. Now with Apple silicon, thin and light-weight display tech, and miniaturisation the time is ripe to resurrect the best looking iMac along with its height-adjustable floating display.

There have never been Pro chips in Mac Studios. The base and Pro chips went into the Mini (we’re talking only desktops here) with the Max and Ultra chips going to the Studio. But I’ll bet you knew that and just made a typing error. Still, given the current environment, I certainly wouldn’t rule out a higher-end Pro chip for the Studio if Apple wanted to make one. I’m just wondering if we’re really going to see an M5 Max version of the Pro.
Don’t you know? The Mac mini Pro is now the Mac Studio Ultra at $3999 and the Mac Studio Ultra is now the Mac Studio Ultra Extreme at $7999. The new Mac Studio Ultra Kidney is $14999.

I remember when Tim Cook promised less expensive Apple Silicon systems during the announced switch from Intel.

Of course, that never happened and now with AI technocrats we can have the same systems for thirty to forty percent more. I can’t wait to sell a kidney when it comes time to update my M Ultra.
Umm, do you remember when the M4 Mac mini came out? It was dirt cheap compared to the competition that could do roughly the same compute power. Or, you know, how about the Mac Neo, started at $599, put the low end laptop market upside down? Prices have gone up EVERYWHERE for memory, not just Apple, which also has nothing to do with Apple Silicon. LLM's didn't even exist in the public sphere when Tim Cook said that. A few months ago, I tried to buy a 256GB SD card for my camera. The price. had more than doubled since I bought one around this time last year, and then Amazon kept telling me shipping had been delayed (they couldn't source any even at twice the price), so I cancelled the order. So, not Apple.

I could not justify the purchase of a Studio for what I would use it for at home, but man I really want one! lol

I suspect the M5 Pro version is the one that most people are waiting for, considering the M4 Pro MacStudio is currently unobtainium. The Ultra version will probably only be of interest to billionaires.
I’m assuming you mean the M4 Max, because the M4 Pro has never existed in a Mac Studio.

That said, I am waiting for the M5 Max Mac Studio. Starting to think I should have bought the M4 Max a year ago, but I wasn’t in dire need so figured I’d wait for the M5. Seems that was a mistake, and I hate the idea of trying to buy an M4 variant now when it’s this late in the release cycle.

What would really improve the Mac Studio would be user installable/replaceable internal storage.

That arguably exists via third-party OEMs who make compatible modules at significantly lower prices than what Apple charges.

But yes, I know when people say this they mean "bog standard M.2 blade SSDs". 😉

I actually loved the form factor of the lamp iMac. I have an M iMac in my home office as a base system for mundane things and I hate it. It feels like a large iPad on a stand with no thought to design ingenuity, and the display is awful. The 27” 5K iMac was much better but Apple couldn’t sell studio displays and Mac’s if they didn’t make it with a smaller display.

It would instantly be the best Mac in a LONG time.

If I had to pick my very favorite Mac form factor of all time, it's absolutely that lamp iMac. I was just helping with a house clean out and got to play with one this weekend (not powered on) and it's just freakin' GENIUS industrial design.

I’m in the same boat that you are. I suspect that, depending on the price of the M5 Max Mac Studio, I may end up not replacing my M2 Max Mac Studio - ever. This update cycle was likely going to be my last at Apple’s Pro and Max level of devices. So I may just use my M5 Pro MacBook Pro as my main computer and forgo Mac desktops completely.

While Jonny Ive had his faults, he designed some of the best products. Jobs and Ive were the perfect pair and Apple hasn’t been the same since. They’ve made some great technical advancements but the designs are uninspiring. I miss when iPhones weren’t bricks but “battery life.!?!!,” 😑

I always remember walking around my local Apple Store and picking up the iPod Touch (one of the last versions of that, maybe the last one -- can't recall) and thinking "some day my iPhone will be this slim and light!"

And they've gone the other direction ever since. The 17PM is literally a brick paver that could be slotted into a patio outside. 🧱

It's so depressing given how cool tech generally got smaller & lighter and more miniaturized the whole time I was growing up in the 80's & 90's.

Well, if this continues like this with all the AI power, a simple heat sink won't do the trick any longer, you need your own personal data center cooling at home?

Doh! Yes, I meant to say Max. With the current lead time of several months on the M4 Max MacStudio, that leaves the M4 Max MacStudio in an awkward state of limbo where it's technically not discontinued, but practically impossible to purchase. So, any news of the M5 version would be especially welcome.

My 11 Pro in midnight green was probably my favourite iPhone - it was the perfect blend of form and function. The iPhone X was a fantastic device, you could feel the craftsmanship and thought that went into it. I loved the iPod and iPod shuffle and iPhone 4 and 5 and so much more that was the perfect digitization of all the media we grew up with mixed with new tech without being overkill. Now it’s all soulless.

Form and function require brilliant minds and hard work to create the perfect balance. Anyone can put chips and circuitry into a silver box, the new beige.

I remember getting my 5s and thinking "this is like jewelry".
The polished chamfered edges were just amazing.
