That's the sound of the Apple Vacuum sucking the money out of your wallet knowing the M3 is coming next year.
They have to release the M2 first, then the M2 Pro, then the M2 Max, and finally then the M2 Ultra. We have at least until early 2024 before we'll see an M3.

Do we know for sure it is the fan? It could be a coil in the power supply. There are at least two suppliers for the Studio power supplies. One does it, the other doesn't.

My return unit was 100% fine. Cannot say the same for whenever I get a replacement (Faulty Wifi). I am hoping the users of this website have superhero hearing and all units are the same. In which case I am not worried about my next unit.

I'll see your high pitched whine and raise you a friggin' wind tunnel! Seriously though, I'd be pissed if I had to deal with an annoying whine on a brand new machine.

The noise is The Apple Vacuum sucking more money out of your wallet knowing the M3 is coming next year.
The back of the studio looks like four kids entering the magic kingdom to meet Micky Mouse and his recognizable but dated friends.

The whine is due to the wait times for Space Mountain.
Alright now, get out there and make me some G**dam*ed money!

Sounds like something that would wind up my constantly complaining teenage son. Whereas my old ears would be blissfully unaware. Might get one.

I remember years ago when my daughter said there was a loud buzzing coming from her pc speakers when she switched her pc on. I investigated and, much to my surprise, a huge bumble bee had become trapped inside, probably looking for a nest site! Anyway, this whining from the studio does seem like a genuine, non-subjective QA issue. I don’t think it’s different peoples perception at all.

How can a machine with a supposedly lesser heat sink and cooling solution have 0 rpm fan mode, but the beefier max studio does not?
Neither have a 0rpm fan mode. I'm the owner of a Studio Max, and one afflicted with high fan noise...

Have you noticed a high-pitched whine from your Mac Studio? Let us know in the comments.
If I'm being completely honest, I haven't even noticed it has a fan yet.

ETA: It replaced a Mac mini that was standing on cut white erasers. (Friends and I have nicknamed this the "e-raiser.") I put it on top of those erasers. So mine probably has better airflow than most. I recommend this to anyone with an Intel Mac mini; it changed the temperature by at least 15°c (it's been a while). Might help with the Studio, too; don't really want to remove them to find out now.

Hi. Mac ultra user here. I am on my 2nd unit. My reseller tries his best. My first machine had a weird sound (whine) to it. They tested the machine and said that the left fan has a problem. I got a new because folks at Apple agreed. Now, having the 2nd one i am not sure. There is still some kind of sound which i think is annoying. With that i also had an hdmi problem with my Benq… all in all. The machine is great and fast. I jist hope this noise thing and other small problema can be sorted out asap.

I feared this issue after following these threads in the forums, but thankfully my M1 Max Studio does not whine. It’s certainly not a quiet machine but perfectly acceptable for my needs. My partner, who has annoyingly good hearing, has not complained yet in our shared office - which is saying something!

I hope everyone gets their machines sorted, because it’s totally worth it for the performance.

The problem with Apple computers these days is because they are so quiet now, you can notice every design flaw that elevates the noice just a little bit. Its also a flaw in the lets keep our designs super secret so we can't test them in the real world then marginalize anyone who complains and add the fix to the next redesign. If you want to not hear design flaws in new product, just turn on the older intel mac that new computer replaced. The bad sounds of the new one will be drowned out by the loud fans of the old one.

I don't hate him (quite the opposite), but I tend to roll my eyes a lot during his videos. That linked vid is a good example.... "HEY APPLE, THIS IS AN SSD, DURRRR." Apple's design choices may confuse him, but he acts like there's zero justification for them. Also, in his vid about the Studio Display, "WHY DON'T THEY JUST USE MAGSAFE? SO DUMB!" when really, magsafe necessitates an external power supply and the design called for an internal PS. Or the whole PS5 storage performance bruhaha where he just read the mfr specs off a Samsung SSD box and declared Tim Sweeney a Sony shill. He dedicated like 3 videos to raging about Apple not fixing his iMac Pro, which he had voided the warranty by disassembling and DROPPING! But then his Razr Blade laptop bricks itself 2 days out of warranty, and he's like "OH well, this is a great excuse to buy a new Razr Blade!"

Now Linus and Anthony et al aren't stupid either, so even if they realize these things later, it ends up being like a news correction: Error on the front-page above the fold; correction on page A-44 10 days later. And I think that's somewhat intentional, because his core audience of PCMR spec wankers demand a high degree of snark in any discussion of Apple products. Lately this has led to a strange dichotomy in LTT content, as Apple products improved and the mainstream moves closer to Apple's philosophy; he's got to cater to his original PCMR audience, but he's also doing a fair bit more positive coverage of Apple gear now, even launching a dedicated Apple channel (Mac Address).
He has a style that appeals to what I can only describe as inquisitive pre-elitists. I always got the feeling that he believes you have to say bad things about a product to avoid being called a shill. So, when his 'bad things' are philosophical choices I feel good knowing that the product works as expected, even if it's not the way some may want it to work. MagSafe is a good example, because you are correct in the approach, but you can't tell me that an internal power supply couldn't possibly have a mag safe cable. MagSafe is such a good product I can see why people would want it in other applications.

To me the iMac Pro videos were cost recovery. I think they always intended to make multiple videos, and when it broke and couldn't get support from Apple they shifted the narrative from performance claims to right to repair. Hating Apple gets views, and if they were worried about paying off their iMac Pro the rant videos were a reliable albeit lazy solution. Apple doesn't supply him with hardware, so the investment has far more risk than the partners he has a working relationship with.

I get the impression that Linus is working to get off camera. His team seems exceptional, and I think he is getting more and more comfortable stepping out of the spotlight for longer periods. I wouldn't be surprised if by 2024 he transitioned to exclusively doing cameos in his videos. I find Riley and Anthony's snark more palatable than Linus. Maybe it's me, but as much as I enjoy those two I enjoy like watching his specialists like Taran, Alex, and Brandon talk about their specialties. They are much more down to earth than the regular on-air talent. All this is to say that Linus has enough diversity that they can apply the most lucrative tone to any specific video. I don't want MA, because my initially reaction to Horst was the yuppy Mac YT. But, seeing him in cross over with other LMG channels he seems cool.
