I think I can hear it if I literally put my hear up to the machine..?
I'm 34 so it's not like my ears are super sensitive anymore, but I normally can hear high pitched noises and electrical buzzing, this one slipped completely past me

You can always up your request to Apple customer satisfaction as the Apple geniuses are generally overwhelmed and under trained they're only there really to help people with iPhone issues.

Don't post Linus videos around here. MacRumors members hate the guy, for some reason.
Deservedly so. Linus posts extremely low iq content devoid of any real technical information and the attempts at humor are embarrassing. I’m happy the guy was able to succeed but if I’m going to spend time watching, I’d like to see a modicum of technical/engineering competence.

Mac Studio Max here and no sound. It is perfectly quiet.

I also question many of the commenters on here that are complaining about the noise. Some accounts were started just when the Studio was announced and commented that they were already worried about it being too noisy before they even had a machine. I don't discount those of you that are having actual issues with the noise. All I am saying is I have been paying attention on here and there was a campaign of disinformation about the fan noise even before they were shipped. Who and why there is this disinformation campaign, I do not know.

With these smaller form factor computers (I have an Intel NUC at home), because they lack the fan noise of the power supply, whenever the CPU cooling fan starts up you really can hear it in a quiet environment. This is what may be happening to the M1 Max Mac Studio computers.

Do we know for sure it is the fan? It could be a coil in the power supply. There are at least two suppliers for the Studio power supplies. One does it, the other doesn't.
No, we don't know the cause at all, some lean towards the PS as you do, some lean towards the fans like I do. Mine doesn't have what I'd call coil whine as it doesn't sound like that to me, but I can't say for sure.

We know there are 2 power supplies, but nothing has been proven about the noise(s) yet. It could be both coil whine and fan noise...

I don't hate him (quite the opposite), but I tend to roll my eyes a lot during his videos. That linked vid is a good example.... "HEY APPLE, THIS IS AN SSD, DURRRR." Apple's design choices may confuse him, but he acts like there's zero justification for them. Also, in his vid about the Studio Display, "WHY DON'T THEY JUST USE MAGSAFE? SO DUMB!" when really, magsafe necessitates an external power supply and the design called for an internal PS. Or the whole PS5 storage performance bruhaha where he just read the mfr specs off a Samsung SSD box and declared Tim Sweeney a Sony shill. He dedicated like 3 videos to raging about Apple not fixing his iMac Pro, which he had voided the warranty by disassembling and DROPPING! But then his Razr Blade laptop bricks itself 2 days out of warranty, and he's like "OH well, this is a great excuse to buy a new Razr Blade!"

Now Linus and Anthony et al aren't stupid either, so even if they realize these things later, it ends up being like a news correction: Error on the front-page above the fold; correction on page A-44 10 days later. And I think that's somewhat intentional, because his core audience of PCMR spec wankers demand a high degree of snark in any discussion of Apple products. Lately this has led to a strange dichotomy in LTT content, as Apple products improved and the mainstream moves closer to Apple's philosophy; he's got to cater to his original PCMR audience, but he's also doing a fair bit more positive coverage of Apple gear now, even launching a dedicated Apple channel (Mac Address).
Same, honestly.

He's definitely fishing for reactions when he pulls the HEY APPLE, IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW THIS IS AN SSD nonsense, because he later proceeds to explain how Apple's flash storage works so he completely understands it and why they do it.
I believe he even goes as far as saying it's a smart cost cutting measure.

What he doesn't understand at all is the appeal of Apple products and I'm not entirely sure I fault him for that. If you're a tech enthusiast is really hard to look at what are essentially computing appliances and not consider them just gimped versions of regular tech products as opposed to machines that just work.

I have to say tho, the fact that Apple Configurator can't just bond a flash module to a Mac Studio is kind of infuriating, I understand the point of having the flash storage paired to the machine for security purposes but I don't see why they can't just let you do the pairing yourself.

Also lmao @ the Razr Blade thing, his bias clearly shows all the time.

The problem with Apple computers these days is because they are so quiet now, you can notice every design flaw that elevates the noice just a little bit. Its also a flaw in the lets keep our designs super secret so we can't test them in the real world then marginalize anyone who complains and add the fix to the next redesign. If you want to not hear design flaws in new product, just turn on the older intel mac that new computer replaced. The bad sounds of the new one will be drowned out by the loud fans of the old one.
My 7 year old iMac is far quieter at low loads than my Studio. I can’t hear the iMac at all when it’s idle, whereas the sound of the Studio is constantly noticeable. I can tell whether or not it’s turned on/awake from several meters away.

I’m waiting on a replacement and hoping it will be as quiet as others say theirs are.

Sadly, this is the new normal on the internet. Stuff gets quickly amped up; especially from those who live for having something to complain about everyday, helping them to feel better.

Good thing you spend time on MacRumors then.
I’m here for the ********s.

But let’s be real, take a look at the g4 subforum or some of the iMac upgrade threads and tell me there are no technically proficient users here. Compare some of the people in the imac threads to the mouth breathing spergs on the ifixit forums for example

The fans in a Studio run all the time it's powered on. And the sound is a higher pitched fan noise than most desktops.

The ordinary fan noise was audible but not disturbingly so.
Huh? I have the same Mac Studio (Max, 32 GPU, 64Gb) and do intensive gaming for hours at a time that used to have my MacBook Pro fan sounding like a B747 at takeoff thrust. The Studio doesn't make a sound. It stays stone cold to the touch, and has ZERO fan noise when placing my ear right next to the exhaust holes of the enclosure. I haven't experienced "ordinary fan noise".

You're one of the lucky ones. Not all are that quite.

I wonder if this whine is only from Studios with 64gig Ram?
I have a 32g and it is super quiet
RAM probably has nothing to do with it. I've got 32GB Ram on a M1Max (32 graphic core version) that I use for audio. The whine is loud enough to be heard through open back over the ear headphones from 5 feet away. While I don't doubt there are some people with bionic hearing, any normal person can hear it. They walk in the room, and after about 5 seconds ask "what is that sound".

From the main post:
"The ‌M1 Ultra‌ is equipped with a much larger copper heatsink, that likely prevents the fan from kicking on as often"

The Mac Studio never turns the fan off (the MBPs do however). It's always running at 1,300RPM from idle basically to full load.

Saw the imbedded video. I like him too, but why were his hands all orange? Did he jump in right from making one of his stocking caps to a video about the studio’s innards?

Let it also be known that the M1 Ultra is also not silent (contrary to everything the usual Youtube suspects said). You CAN hear the fan at idle and it also whines a little bit. I've also got a ThunderBay 8 so the noise of that masks the whine of the Mac Studio tbh, but still... these things are not silent, as everyone has been incorrectly saying.

can't say I'm surprised considering the enclosure is 90% fan. since apple has a track record of not fixing issues after release, there'll need to be more people speaking up for them to address it.
