Illegal was in ' '. I know it's not technically illegal, but go to almost anyone's house who uses MTR and ask to see the original disc.

Talking about limewire or bittorrent is, in essence, the same.

Go to my house. I'll show you the disc and I'll show you the ripped and recompressed copy running on my iPod Classic 120GB. Same thing for CDs. I'll show you the CD and then show you the MP3 on my hard drive and in my iPod.

Bittorrent is used for the distribution of everything from Linux distributions to movie trailers.

Ever heard of the Sony safe-harbor principle that was set by the Supreme Court 21 years ago in Sony v. Universal Studios 464 U.S. 417 (1984)? The ruling stated that, "…the sale of copying equipment, like the sale of other articles of commerce, does not constitute contributory infringement if the product is widely used for legitimate, unobjectionable purposes. Indeed, it need merely be capable of substantial non-infringing uses." (Sony 464 U.S. at 442).

In the above cases, the products are being used for legitimate, non-objectionable purposes. So stop calling them "illegal."

P.S. Yes, I know it's an ancient thread, but it still shows up in searches and if we don't want a government run by the MPAA, RIAA, and Disney, people need to be educated.

Same situation here. But, after reading this, it looks like I will have to remove all of the video off my network drive. Drat, I have about 300 of them. I guess I should have read the law before I started.
Agreed, so the only real recourse for you now is to record all of your movies to DVD and mail them to me. After that, please delete all movies from your hard drive.

That will absolve you of any wrongdoing...I am a priest...kind of...
