If you're into Linux, then I would keep it. The AS Mac doesn't fully support Linux unless that has recently changed. My 2012 Mini is happily running Ubuntu and I will convert my 2018 Mini with 32GB of RAM to Ubuntu as well. Ubuntu is one of the more complete and stable Linux distributions and if you are into adding themes, you can even make it look like macOS.

I just ran some SNs on Apple's site and the oldest MBA they'll give money for is the 2018, only worth $95. Oldest MBP is 2017, worth as low as $40 for the base model.

Not great value, not unexpected for Macs that are often obsolete in Apple's terms. Still it's better to recycle those for a Neo or Air while the time is right. I wouldn't expect to see many trade-ins of M1 or M2 Macs, because isn't that at best a lateral move?

Yes, but apparently halving your ram will improve things, and if we disagree then the neo isn't for us 🤣.

Most likely, unless you think it weighs too much, or the battery is near end-of-life AND you realize you bought way more computer than you actually need.

I can imagine a case where trading in a 2021 Pro for a Neo could make sense, but it's not likely.

Even if it's too much computer, it's not like you are buying a Ferrari for the weekly shop... There's a sizable minority here that seem to think anything apple does is perfect, even if they release a product that involves going back on what they say (16Gb minimum for Apple AI just 1.5 years ago)

I traded-in my M1 Mac mini last year at the Apple Store for a gift card. Last week I used that gift card toward to purchase a MacBook Neo.

I can't believe I actually found someone that liked the 2015, I hated mine and was the quickest I ever sold an Apple Product. Configured mine with the 2.8Ghz i7, AMD 370x GPU, 1TB SSD. The thing was a throttle monster.

I even re-pasted it with the best thermal compound available at the time (Thermal Grizzly) Couldn't save the 47w TDP in a system design that probably couldn't keep a 25w TDP at bay.

Not especially relevant but I love how Apple requires you to enter a serial but then makes you manually input all the information, even though they obviously know the specs from the serial 😑

If I trade in my 2015 13" MBP with SRGB screen, 8GB/256 SSD for the Neo, ill get exactly the same thing in return for a Macbook 11 years newer!!!

Probably because I have and vastly prefer the 2.2 models with iGPU only.

Quiet, cool, calm and collected running Sequoia, which will be its "final OS".

The A18 Pro is 55% faster multicore and 53% faster single core than the i7 2.8Ghz 4980HQ the highest spec CPU you could get in that era. I had in my 15" 2015. And as mentioned in my post above. The 4980HQ throttled so bad the A18 Pro after about 10 minute run would likely be over 100% faster.

Only possible via Open Core Legacy of course. Apple dropped official support for the 2015 MBP at Monterey.

But I don't blame you I run OCLP for Sequoia on an older Intel Mac mini I use as a media server.

I looked on eBay and found some M2 base model 15 inch for about the same price as a new Neo, and you get the same 8GB/256GB, unless you shop for a higher spec. M2 has bigger screen, Thunderbolt, faster chip, and MagSafe if you care about that.

Yet no warranty.

I did exactly that with a 2015 MBP the wife knocked off the dining table and Apple apologized for saying the device was worthless but did me the favor of sending a mailing label for a recycling center.

I added a M4 MacBook Air (32gb and 2TB SSD) last year for a airline traveling computer as I did not want to have my M4 MacBook Pro Max (128GB and 8TB SSD with nano screen) "disappeared" at the airport.

I just bought a silver Neo (8GB and 512 SSD) to serve as my airline travel device. I can initialize it back to the "new" screen before returning from over seas and if TSA keeps it, not such a big loss.

I have an external USB-C hub that I can put the camera SD card into and the external 4TB SSD can be connected. File transfers of photos works at a reasonable speed. The Neo can do the usual common things that I do without problems. The smaller screen is a constraint, but livable.

Probably have purchased my last MacBook Air.

My GOAT was the 2014 15” MBP which still had an Nvidia GT 750M 2GB GPU and a mechanical trackpad. I believe it was identical to the 2015 in all other respects except they doubled the storage lanes making the 2015 SSD nearly 2X faster if I recall.

Yep .. mine both run modern NVMe sticks with adapters in there to take advantage.

The SK Hynix Gold P31's ended up being sort of the best for these due to super low power consumption.

Oof.. I'm sorry to hear that.

I really hate how Apple just ignores component upgrades on trade-in valuations.

It just mega stings both on the buying side and the trade-in side.

If one pays up for a bunch of BTO options, we have basically no choice but to sell privately in an effort to better recoup value.

Apple is offering $705 for a base 13-in MacBook Air and plenty of people only paid $749-$799 when they bought the laptop. The base MacBook Air is a no-brainer upgrade this cycle, especially if you're in or near a state without sales tax. Yay New Hampshire!

I’m not sure, but I *think* my 13” core i3 with 8/256 might fall very slightly short of your preferred combo… But Apple is still willing to give me something for it!
