Hopefully to ditch their ancient INTEL Macs. An 8GB M1 MacBookAIR might be worth the swapping out for new shiny. That's about it though.

Anyone trade in their Mac Pro for an Macbook Neo? 🤣

I actually traded in my 2019 Mac Pro for a loaded 32 GB M5 MacBook Air to run OpenClaw! 🙂

Apple is offering $705 for a base 13-in MacBook Air and plenty of people only paid $749-$799 when they bought the laptop. The base MacBook Air is a no-brainer upgrade this cycle, especially if you're in or near a state without sales tax. Yay New Hampshire!
Ahh New Hampshire. We lived in CT and had a ski place in VT. Lebanon NH was the quick jaunt over the border to grab tax free liquor.

Oof.. I'm sorry to hear that.

I really hate how Apple just ignores component upgrades on trade-in valuations.

It just mega stings both on the buying side and the trade-in side.

If one pays up for a bunch of BTO options, we have basically no choice but to sell privately in an effort to better recoup value.
Oh I didn't do it, my M1P and M4P still work fine, I just know that when I've looked in the past they think that current devices are suddenly worth 30% of their total value. About the only thing worth trading in are Apple Watches as they keep their value somewhat well.

Ha, so they offer $985 for my M4P...despite the page saying they offer "up to" $600 for a MBP. So weird.

Trade-in value for my M4 Air 16/512 is $755. If that was my only computer I would consider trading it and some cash for a Neo and a Mac mini. As it stands I'm happy with the Air and my iMac Pro, which combined are plenty powerful for my needs.

I'm definitely trading in my 16" M1 Pro MBP for a 15" M5 MBA. I think the M1 Pro was still technically faster in a few situations (not all) but I don't even scratch the surface with what I do on these. Just happy to have a newer machine with a much longer lifespan, and much less burdensome to carry around in a backpack.

The best part about this is that the Neo should start dropping the price of used M1 and M2 MacBook Airs. I'm not saying people will sell an M2 for a Neo, but many people will prefer a new Neo with a warranty, over a used M2 without one, so effectively, the prices should go down.

The base M1 MBA might be worth swapping out if the battery is shot. Mine is doing fine and I don't see anything about the Neo that would prompt me to buy one.

Now if this M1 suddenly expires, that might be a different issue. 🤔 Neo? M5 Air? Refurb M4 Air? Something older from Bay? 🤔

Suddenly seeing 3 (maybe 4) large trade-in cycles happening back to back these next 12-18 months.

1) Apple has instantly spurred a large trade-in cycle on MacBooks that is hitting the "entry-level / economy" end of the MacBook product ladder. This is notable for so many reasons. Apple has never really had an entry level (in terms of a $599 price) notebook before. Yes they sold M1 Airs for cheap via Walmart. But that was on the sly and only through The Mart. The Neo is through Apple.com and the Apple store and with full Apple Marketing, warranty and other benefits. Otherwise, I don't recall the original iBook prices back in the day, but they were not this cheap.

2) I think this trade-in cycle will last a while, and it will spur what some have said already --- a second trade-in cycle at the MID-range MacBook level with people buying tons of Refurbished M2/M3/M4 MacBook units this summer as those products are put back into the Apple Refurb store.

3) Trade-in Cycles 1 & 2 are then going to hit trade-in cycle 3 in late 2026 or early 2027 when the new Ultra Premium MacBook or the new form-factor/new design MacBook Pro M6 is launched.

Overall Apple Notebook sales will be huge now through Q1 or Q2 of 2027.

4) And, I really think that if Apple truly improves the Gen 2 iPhone Air (better camera which so many people must have; better speaker situation; 2, or 3, or 5 additional hours of battery life; and a price point starting at $799 or $850), it may spur a measurable trade-in cycle on the phone side. I can't see millions buying a $2800-$3000 i-Fold. But I can see a lot of remaining 13-14-15-16 folks recognizing a better cost-benefit if a less expensive iPhone Air2 with a better camera is launched. I don't care about cameras, but with a better price, I would buy an Air2 quickly.

Might be a good time to stock up on Apple stock. If the economy rebounds, Apple's next several quarters are going to very nice. A nice way to mark 50 years.

Pretty much all reviews give it a thumbs up, is like watching the queue at a new restaurant and you wanna join in.

Apple this week saw an unusual surge of Mac trade-ins amid the launch of the MacBook Neo.

A reliable source speaking to MacRumors revealed that the quantity of Macs traded in at Apple retail stores this week increased over 100% compared to previous weeks, likely driven by demand for the MacBook Neo and M5 MacBook Air.

Older, low-end models dominated this week's trade-ins, suggesting that customers are upgrading to the MacBook Neo and the M5 MacBook Air, rather than the new MacBook Pro models with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.

The scale of increase is noticeably different from most previous Mac launches. While the launches of new Macs understandably cause a slight surge of trade-ins, the increase is typically much smaller than the one seen this week, suggesting heightened consumer enthusiasm for the new models. Evidence suggests that this is the biggest surge in Mac trade-ins since the launch of the first Apple silicon Macs between 2020 and 2021.

No Apple Store has been close to "empty" in like 20 years.
They seem emptier to me of actual product, minus the tables and tables of iPhones. There just wasn't a lot of anything "cool" to check out. I mean, you can pretty much get anything in the store cheaper elsewhere. I guess it's just people who like paying full price that go there.

I did trade in my 14” MBP M4 Pro 24GB/1TB for a 16” MBP M5 Pro 24GB/1TB only because I needed a bigger screen. I went with Best Buy instead of Apple because I got more for my M4 Pro plus I get 18 months financing and 24 months Apple Care+ with my Best Buy Total Tech membership. Also got a $100 Best Buy gift card and $100 in rewards with the purchase.

I can't, for the life of me, understand why companies don't sell backlit keyboards in 2026. It's unbelievable. It can't cost that much... can it?
It's a product differentiator. If Apple gave Neo all of the features of the Air why would they pick the Air?

I would imagine this is the “get off intel even if you don’t need the performance - here’s an affordable exit ramp!” moment from Apple, given the end of Intel support.

If you’re on an older Intel machine outside of some specific old software there’s little excuse any more.

Cost, complexity, battery life.

For something I’ve used maybe once a year on my machines. If that.

Most of the time the machine is used in the dark to play movies the keyboard backlight is turned off.
