It's a product differentiator. If Apple gave Neo all of the features of the Air why would they pick the Air?

I don’t think adding backlights to the Neo keyboard would be taking every Air feature.

Yes but where do you draw the line? Some people are outraged it doesn't have 16gb of ram, others are mad about the keyboard not being backlit, others are mad about the smaller battery and some are mad about the display not being as good.

Which in why IMO the MBA is the better choice, worth the added cost.

To YOU it may be, and it is to myself as well, but to some people with a very limited budget the Neo is going to be a better option. The compromises Apple made will be easy to live with for people doing Light computing work.

Neo is a good laptop and can consider upgrading from older Intel based MacBooks. Looks like Apple will be able to sell a large number of Neos.

Why would you ever trade in your computer? I use it till it’s basically lost all its value and then either gift it to a relative or smash it and throw it away. Think of all the information that somebody could get from your computer even if you wiped, they can still get traces of your life.

I still have my 2011, 2018 and M4 Macbook Airs and my 2008 and 2013 iMacs too.

No. If there’s removable storage, just remove the storage and completely reset the hardware. (NV-RAM reset)

If the storage is not removable, wipe the storage properly, it’ll take about eight hours. Google „secure erase” and „5220.22-m Standard”.

Gifting is best. Sending a completely wiped machine for recycling is OK, Smashing a machine is just creating ewaste.

Also Apple give you about $17 for a three year old MBP so there is that too..

You do you. I'll do me. If Apple is going to offer me nearly 80% of what I originally paid for my M4 MBA an entire year ago, I feel like I would be foolish to decline that...

You could draw the line at the keyboard, in my opinion. Everything else I could live with as a potential buyer. In fact, it's still a nice little computer.

Where do you draw the line on adding features? It’s likely to be just as arbitrary as Apple if not more so.

The base M1 MBA might be worth swapping out if the battery is shot. Mine is doing fine and I don't see anything about the Neo that would prompt me to buy one.

Now if this M1 suddenly expires, that might be a different issue. 🤔 Neo? M5 Air? Refurb M4 Air? Something older from Bay? 🤔

I just ran some SNs on Apple's site and the oldest MBA they'll give money for is the 2018, only worth $95. Oldest MBP is 2017, worth as low as $40 for the base model.

My 2012 Air still rocks as a media server in my house. Apple probably won't give me much for it. 🤣

I don’t think that a single M1 or later device needs to be replaced in favor of a MacBook Neo. It’s just not worth it. Maybe an Intel Mac would be that I don’t think those are worth anything on trade-ins.

Those must be some confused people if they’re trading any referb store quality Mac for a Macbook Neo. That, or they’re buying MBA’s and realizing that they’re overspending and can save $5-600 and just get the Neo. I mean, you can’t find any YouTube reviewer to call the Neo a gimpbook. Not even iFixIt or Linus Media.

Sure, but I don’t think that anyone who bought any M-series MBA is trading it in for a Neo. These are most likely people with intel based Macs or Windows 10 laptops users.

I’m perfectly happy with my base model M1 8gig / 256 - still operating fine. Maybe in 2030, it’ll be time to recycle it for whatever “Neo” is released then.

Excellent. Used M1 and M2 machines will be dropping in price and Asahi Linux is nearly feature complete. As of a few days ago prices on Ebay still hadn't reflected that a new 8/256 laptop is only $600. But that will change.

… but if you listen to forum posters here 8gig was already too little RAM back in 2020. I also remember when those same forum posters said the SSD of the M1 would be obliterated because of all the memory swapping on that 8 gig. It’s what … 6 years now? What’s the reality today.

Closer to 5.5 years if you purchased the M1 MBA on launch day like I did. It’s still going strong, battery is admittedly not as good as before (expected), and I wonder if being made to support the MacBook Neo for a couple more years means the lifespan of my MBA gets extended as well.
