Its seems to finally be back up. Still there is network problems, but I just checked my mail just fine. However aside from that I don't see anything new.

is 27 cents a day really too much for a graduate student's salary? Thats kinda sad if it is. I love my .Mac and i am in college as well. And i have to pay my 100 dollars a month now to keep my website up and running.

As I said before, for syncing, yes, it is too much. And it's not 27 cents per day. It's $99, NOW. If it was 27 cents per day, maybe (or $10/month, or $25/quarter). But when I have to fork out 1/3 of my free cash one month (after mortgage, car insurance, food, etc), it ain't worth it. There is nothing that spectacular about .mac.

If you're paying $100/mo to keep your website running, you're paying too much. Or not spending enough time in class. Or both. As I've said before, Freeshell.org has 300mb webspace for the ONE TIME FEE of $36.

Interesting that Apple is readying a .Mac update right before the first wave of .Mac subscribers are up for renewal (42 days from now to be exact).

Also, Apple updated .Mac last year around this time (September 29). Coincidence? I think not. 😀

As a .Mac subscriber, I'm wondering if this update is substantial enough to hold me over for another year. Over the past month, I've been migrating my email contacts to a different address in case I decide to part with .Mac.

It gets harder and harder to hold onto .Mac. I am proud of being an early adopter, but it has been disappointing so far.

If iDisk were to be really functional, it would need at least 2G of online storage. For $100, 10G would be an impressive amount.

I guess I'll wait and see what they do, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I agree. With mail services like Yahoo!, Google and Hotmail now offering loads of space (especially Google with gmail) which are technically just for e-mail and not explicitly for storage (even though that's what everyone uses it for!), Apple needs to bump up their limits to remain competitive. I don't think it's right that people get more storage with their e-mail service than they do with an aspect of .mac that is supposed to be dedicated for the specific purpose of storing files.

With that information in mind, I don't at all feel unreasonable about confronting Apple about what we receiving for our continued investment. What I am relying on though, is Apples tendency to deliver where other companies don't.

Agreed, I have been doing the same with my email contacts. I feel that .mac is the least satisfying Apple product or service that I have purchased in my 15 years as a Mac user. Renewing last year was really hard to justify even with the update.

I feel that .mac is Apple Tax for those of us who had grown dependent on a .mac email address and need the syncing abilities. .mac is caca poopy for webservices and storage space so the email address and sync capabilities is really the only thing keeping me but that aint worth $99/year.

A strange coinscidence - that's pretty much when my renewal is too. How long has iTools/.Mac been around? I'll be going into my 3rd year of subsciption this september (or is it beginning of october?) This was just because I bought my first iBook about 6 weeks before the new school term 2 years ago.

.mac Lover

Wow.....
I can't believe all the bad mouthing of such a solid service. I feel it is well worth the $99. I sync two computers, one an iBook that I use on the road. I backup my important stuff and 250mb is plenty. I could use more but we can always use more. My wife was telling me that yesterday when I brought my paycheck home.... 🙂
I use the webpage, I have my music demos on there and a couple of movies and a slide show. I use the iCards all the time and haven't bought a card at Wally World for 3 years. 😉 I especially like the fakeroo email address that I can use on those sites that you have to give out your address to use what they have. Several check to see if the address is real. Sure I could do all of these things elsewhere but it's all right here and for the price of a few pizzas and a 6 pack, I get to use it all year!
And I do use Logic Express and use the training stuff.
I like it and will sign up next year for sure.

One of the reasons Google can afford to give away so much space is that the average user doesn't use it all. The average use of a file storage area would be much higher than the average use of an email service, thus it will always be more expensive for Apple to offer the same limit with .mac as Google does with GMail. That is, until Google offers an iDisk equivalent.

Apple really has no excuse not to offer a minimum of 1GB of storage. It's not as if Apple has to incur the cost of that amount of storage up front. I'm sure their storage capacity is scalable and upgraded as needed.

If it isn't, maybe they can by some xServe RAID setups from themselves. 😎

I agree i would like to see some more space on my idisk, 2gig + is what i would prefer to see... 😉

heh i need dedicated server for my website(s).

and 100 dollars for dedicated is relatively cheap too.

I could care less about a .Mac update when I can go some other place and get more for less.

The mail is not that reliable, space is weak and it runs a little slow on my iMac.

o and why pay for it when you can just keep signing up for the free trial 😀

if the Idisk grows, I will jump aboard. It is hard to justify at this point when the space provided for $99 is almost the same as free hotmail Email space, and when Gmail has over 2gb currently.

Until Apple can give us more space, I am going to continue emailing myself disk images as a backup plan. Good old Gmail

Well no .Mac update today. So we will have to wait for another day! 🙁

I'm used to this...
I'm in Australia - and we still don't have iTMS or iPhoto printing / books yet!

Yep, its the sad truth. And now I have seen the ROKR DJY, I think I'll wait to see what I can get either the W800, K750i or a Series 60 OS phone for, because the ROKR dont much rock me...although I do wonder if I wait another 6 months whether I will get the real iPhone which the Moto exec alluded to in his speach "today". Sounds to me as though we will see a RAZR/NANO deal - which would rock... sigh... 😕

I admit: I really do enjoy .Mac. That said, it would be a much better value if there was a bit more storage space. On that, I think I'm in agreement with the folks suggesting 1GB, which seems like a reasonable amount given what others (e.g., Gmail) offer. Hopefully "immanent" means by the end of the month; but honestly... if it doesn't I'm not going to quit using .Mac anytime soon. The peace of mind it gives me through iDisk backups of my most important data (my dissertation) make it worth $8.25USD a month.

TO buy outright I've seen a few websites that have anything up to AUD$150 difference between these two phones - K750i and W800i!
OUCH!

Mmm if my local reseller has some nano's though tomorrow... maybe I'll buy one of them while I make up my mind?!?!?!
