I'm under 30 days left in my subscription, wish they'd hurry up and do something otherwise I might just let it lapse.
😕
For fellows like you (or I) with that kind of time-to-go deadline it's a casse of touch and go. Every year I've said the same; then resubscribed and had the service improved after subscription. Sure, it was never market leading improvements, but they were noticeable.

However, since I got my Gmail, the ability to publish a few piccies with ease, or sinc several of my Macs with ease, the price is looking pretty expensive.

.Mac is a 24 month service, I believe, for newbies.

.mac needs an update

I use .mac but the iDisk and email really needs to increase in the storage stakes. Like a lot of people said if Gmail offers 2+ gb for free why cant .mac people have it if they pay for it

Grrrr. I grudgingly just renewed. Over the years, I've given out my .mac email address to I would guess 500+ people and there is no way I can afford to loose those contacts! I've never hated to purchase a Apple product so bad in my life. 🙁

I did find a retail box on eBay for $60 though, so it wasn't that HIGH of a renewal price... but still. All for 1 freaking email account. 😡

On the .Mac website it says all .Mac services will be down for maintenance for 4 hours right before the start of the Apple Expo in Paris. Sounds like it should be updated then but it could be a complete coincidence too.

just to bump this thread, any news/rumors about the .mac update? or what is the meaning of "imminent"?

The following is posted on the .Mac homepage for those with an account:

.Mac will be undergoing scheduled maintenance from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm PST on 9/19/05. All .Mac services will be affected. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Last Updated: 9/14/05

Things usually pick up in late September/early October for benefits as the offering companies start to crank it up for the holiday season, and back to school students with new machines and the free .Mac offer; those will soon expire.

Now if it just means that Apple will increase iDisk storage. Would be nice to add some other benefits also.

Other benefits would be great, but I think the main one .mac subscribers are looking for is the increased iDisk storage space - Apple needs to address this first before anything else in my opinion.

What Apple needs to do is get off their asses and make the idisk faster. Before upgrading space or anything. It's so darn slow it is aggravating... 😡
Sorry for the rant but idisk synching is sooo slow and I have a very decent connection.

Not being a .mac user, I wasn't aware that this was an issue as well - thanks for enlightening me (just as you have many times before, my friend!) 😉 😎

You're welcome, as always. 🙂

Yeah, unfortunately it is my biggest gripe with .mac. Not enough to get me to cancel but pretty annoying. Bumped up storage (about a gig) and a fast idisk and I would promote it as a great service. As for right now, it is good enough for me to stick with it, but does not do its job particularly great.

Sounds like you are not alone - there are many others I have read comments from saying the same thing, that they're essentially on the fence with regards to their subscriptions - it does the job, but could do it a lot better. This .mac update (or lack thereof) may be the tipping point for some users - let's hope Apple realizes this and acts accordingly. 😎

Even on a really good day iDisk services are painfully slow, uploading pictures or music files is interminable. I'm really hoping that they announce much improved speed and storage before my renewal occours in October or I might have to reconsider though I do love my .Mac email address.
Having said that, I really do find it very usefull and would hate to see it go.

Now you are getting me excited. A very nice gift from Apple prior to the Paris Expo. If we get the iDisk upgrade, then my interest will follow.
😎

Although I'm not a .mac subscriber, I'll still be following this closely. Who knows, if this update does happen and is worthwhile, I may consider joining... stranger things have happened... 😉

11pm here is 5am in paris. the .mac update will be right in time for the paris expo. i hope mail and idisk will be faster.

.mac update please

Something is coming....I would like to see....

1. More space...between my mail and hompeage with pics and video I am almost out of room.

2. Backup 3.0 ..more robust features needed.

3. New widgets. If they don't update space how about out a widget telling me how little space I have left!

4. Publish all calendars at once not just one at a time. Global ical calendars.

Anyone know the date when itools changed to .mac and became a pay service? Was it around this time?

Sept 30, 2002

Answered my own question....

"iTools rebranded as .MAC - In a shocking and controversial move, Apple announced today that effective September 30th, existing mac.com (iTools) users must either shell out $49.95 a year ($99.95 per year for new users) or lose their formerly free mac.com (iTools) accounts. The new .MAC service includes an increase to 100MB of iDisk storage, and comes with a "free" subscription to Virex (virus protection software).

so an update seems likely at around the 3 year anniversary

I am hoping for something nice ^_^

I just hope that emails sent to me don't get bounced (with my luck they will and i will never get them :/)
