Anyhow, my 12” 2017 16/256 GB MacBook was feeling really, really slow every time I restarted, mainly because it was doing stuff in the background, mostly syncing Photos and Messages, etc. Plus my 256 GB drive was starting to get more cramped than to my liking.
I’ve since stopped syncing both Messages and Photos to iCloud on that machine since I almost always use my other machines for those apps anyway. I’ve also signed out of Messages completely, and deleted all the Messages attachments and the old Photos Library.
Not only did it free up almost 75 GB of storage, the machine feels a lot more nimble now after startup, and gets to maximum speed quickly since there are much fewer background services stealing CPU cycles now. I am pleased.
