Two months with the Retina MacBook and the fan in my former 2011 MacBook Air sounds like the flight deck on the Abraham Lincoln. First world problems, I guess.

The Retina MacBook Pro has a CPU with a 28W TDP, whereas the Retina MacBook has a 6W CPU. My RMB is already plenty warm in the lap, so I cannot imagine a 28W CPU. Must be blazin'. And noisy, with the fan. The RMB is silent. And it weighs just about half what the MacBook Pro weighs. MacBook Pro is a better choice than an Air these days, for sure, but golly, cool(er), light, and silent are attractive properties. All in all, this is a great product and it certainly points the way to the second or third iteration of Retina MacBook being astounding.
Fan on the MacBook Pro stay at 0 rpm until temperature doesn't go above 40 degrees Celsius, so during light usage (Mail, Safari and office) it is absolutely silent.

I've used an 11" MBA since 2012. Just recently got the rMB, and I don't think I could ever go back to the MBA. The screen alone is worth it. I can only imagine that the v2 will be even better. Don't miss the USB ports, or any of that either. Battery life has been fine [at least for my uses].

You won't be disappointed.

Are you sure about that? I thought they were always spinning, but at a low RPM, when idle. I don't think the heatsink inside the Macbook is big enough to idle fanless. Unless this is a 2015-model thing that started.

Install the app scmfancontrol. The fan is always spinning or else the computer would overheat. It's at 2000rpm on my rMBP

Thanks for all your advice and help with my wee dilemma. The most taxing work my laptop will do is some editing in Photoshop. I'm sure either will cope no problem.
I'm heading to Inverness tomorrow to see both side by side.

If you use photoshop, definitely a rMB should be your first choice. Its really obvious how much better the screen is and the rMB is so much more portable.

I'm in Scotland and work for the health service over here. They are doing a good deal just now where you pay it off over two years and pay no interest or vat.
Going to cost me around £30 or $45 a month

Very true. A bezel less tablet would be amazing. It would need palm rejection, but it would really revitalize the market.
And also very difficult to use. Think about it for a moment how you hold a tablet and why the bezels are there

The 13" rMBP has very decent thermals, and generally remains cools & quiet. The 15" can be a "cooker" and does heat up rapidly even under moderate loads. the 12" rMB may actually feel hotter than the 13" rMBP as it`s passive cooled and radiates the majority of it`s excess heat via the base plate.

I currently own all three, so am I a good position to compare.

Q-6

Yes exactly with the 15". It gets hot so easily even just on safari. It can be kind of annoying sometimes because I feel like it's draining battery too fast.

Well I had a close look at the rMB 12 yesterday and the only doubt I have now is the size of the screen for photo editing purposes.

I can see that being a potential issue. I use a SP3 for some editing and its ok, but its not my main machine to edit my images.

And that's the most important thing about it. regardless of what all of us say, it'll be your eyes that determine suitability.

I just got a rMB, and am loving it! But this is strictly a mobile machine, for me. I have a 27" iMac, with two external displays, as my main system. If I was buying one system to do everything, I'd buy a MacBook Pro for its power and ability to drive lots of big screens.

As a 2nd system - 12" retina Macbook
As an only system - 13 or 15" MacBook Pro

Sure.
I was surprised first time I noticed, and I was thinking smcfancontrol wasn't working, but as soon as temperature rise, fan start spinning up and the app reports it correctly.
I'm speaking about the early 2015 model.

Smcfancontrol installed and on the rMBP 13" (2015) fan isn't spinning until temperature reaches about 40 degrees Celsius. It is way cooler than any MBP I owned (4 models before this).

Another vote for the rMB.
The MBA is just too old now and its firmly been replaced by the rMB as the mobile choice.

Wish I could, but that's the one issued by corporate. I'll hand it in in about another year, to be replaced with something else TBD.

Decision made, I'm going with the rMB. I now need to think about what photo editing programme to go for ?

As you can see, with 36 degrees Celsius the fan is at 0 rpm

You mention PS, that's the granddaddy and I'd opt for that. Also consider Lightroom if you need DAM capabilities or if you don't want PS, check out Pixelmator.
