someone said the dell can use both of them... that is not true because you need to select which one to include in the 13.3 model..

anyone else

That's incorrect according to the PCMag article:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2338382,00.asp

It says here,

" the XPS 13 also houses dual graphics cards from Nvidia: The Nvidia GeForce 9400M (integrated) and the GeForce 9500M (discrete) chipsets. They can be used in Nvidia's SLI mode for top-notch 3D performance, or the integrated portion can be used alone for long-lasting battery life."

I don't game on my Macbook so I like the Macbook better, but there's no denying that two graphic cards in SLI, with one of them a discrete card, should kill just one integrated card in performance.

Seriously.

OP do you really expect people in an APPLE forum to know anything, or care about, a Dell ninetywhateverhundred?

Great, another arrogant, ignorant unhelpful moron....

Both nice machines, one is intergrated gpu one isn't as stated but for non gaming purposes won't make too much difference. Go for whichever your pulled towards!!

What was arrogant, ignorant or unhelpful....this is an Apple forum not Dell....and dont call other forum users Morons, that IS ignorant !!!

And they are not nice machines, they are horrid leather bound abortions.......

Don't bother even considering the 2.4GHz MacBook. It is overpriced and performs only marginally better than the 2.0GHz model.

That said, if you want to play games then the XPS will do it much better than the MacBook. The XPS is clearly the better looking machine, but the MacBook will feature better build quality.

Other than that, it's just a matter of which one is better value for money.

I take it your into "leather" then ?

Yes.......if your Stevie Wonder...............

Hmm, I'll revise what I said. Closed the MacBook is better (albeit it does have a hideous black stripe all the way along the back air vent), but when the computer is open (and really, this is when appearances really count) the Dell is much nicer looking, mainly because inside it is all black and doesn't jump between black and silver and black and silver.

You know, i agree about the black hinge at the back, what were Apple thinking......

The real question is can you live with yourself saying "im a pc"

epic fail.

but seriously Dell fans like to come here and boast how amazing Dell is all the time which is why Dell is going bust. In your case as the computers are so similar in terms of hardware this is really another Windows Vista vs. Mac OS X debate which noone can answer, its like asking who made the universe.
Mac = PC. PC is short for Personal Computer, a Mac is still a computer, uses the same parts as a Windows/Linux machine, it's just shaved down into a minimalistic notebook with OS X on it. Either way, you ARE a PC.

To the OP, yes, the 9500 is better.

Don't forget the Leather "accents"

actually i edited my comments because the new xps 13 are ddr3 and 1066 fsb but the rest of my comments are true.
about the battery, im using the measurements using the standard battery, not the extended 9cell which sticks out the back.

but im not gonna bash the machine though, as far are windows pc goes, the xps is by better one of the better ones.
if i was forced to by a window pc i would get a vaio.

when you are customising them in dell you cant have both of them in the laptop, it just let you choose the 9500 by an extra amount of 100$

I think it could just be their web site being sloppy. The 9400M is part of the motherboard itself. You can't remove it because the same chip also handles the memory controller and other stuff necessary for the computer to run. Since the 9500 is a dedicated graphics chip, it only makes sense that they add it on to the existing motherboard with the 9400M handling the memory stuff.

But to be absolutely sure you could wait until reviews of the XPS 1340 come out. There's always a chance that PCMag article could be wrong.

WOW I bet no one ever knew that
using PC and Mac just shows the difference between the 2 and that's all.

On the notebookreview.com forums there are some people saying that the nvidia 9500 discrete chip isn't actually a 9500 chip, but some wacky combination of a 9400M and a 9200G that nvidia calls a 9500. No idea how accurate this is, but it's better to wait for some official reviews in the off chance you're considering an XPS.

I've read about this combination as well. Hopefully someone will dig more into what the situation is on the XPS.

Fallout 3 on Macbook: not very satisfying. At 1280x800, it's playable on low settings, maybe about 20-25fps, but doesn't look very good.
As for the 9500 in the Dell, it should be around 8600 speeds if i remember correctly, so nearly twice the 3dmarks as the 9400m. the 9400m+9200m combination rumor was an old rumor, when nvidia had a discrete chip named 9400. Now that they have a new integrated 9400, that system doesn't really apply anymore.

Not sure either would be a good choice for gaming. I'd go for something a bit more beefy. 9600 GT at least.

When you compare the cost of a Dell and factor in the additional software, memory, and other extras you have to buy to go along with it, the difference in price between the MacBook and the Dell isn’t as great as most people believe. And because the MacBook comes with so many built-in applications that you’ll enjoy using for both work and play (rather than useless freebies you’ll want to uninstall), a MacBook makes good financial sense.
Finally, a MacBook is built with the most cutting-edge technology by some of the smartest hardware engineers, software developers, and product designers on the planet. So you’re getting the latest technological advances and a computer that isn’t in danger of becoming obsolete anytime soon..
It's your choice!

You mean nonsense I'm paying for like iWeb, Chess and Garageband?

The Dell machine has the option of a faster processor than the MacBook, it has a much more sophisticated GPU and comes with more memory. There is also the ability to add a Blu Ray drive, something which Apple's "smartest hardware engineers" don't seem to even know exists.

I have a 2.4 Aluminum MacBook that I got in October and my sister has a 13.3-inch Dell XPS that she got last spring. Prior to getting my Mac I was a PC guy all the way. My observations:

1. XPS is a nice machine, but the aluminum of the MacBook is nicer and feels more solid.
2. Trackpad on MacBook is much better than Dell.
3. My sister had issues with Vista out of the box including BSOD. The virus software that came pre-installed was not even fuly compatible with Vista and caused issues. I also had alot of issues trying to upgrade Vista to the latest service pack and still have not resolved it for her.
4. Dell came with a lot of crapware installed on it that slowed down the system.
5. OS X has been great for me with no crashing at all to date.

Overall I think that the experience with the MacBook has been superior. I cannot comment on speed differences as I have not run them side by side. I also have not compared the screens side by side, but the Dell screen is very nice and I think runs at higher resolutions.

Just my two cents.

I bought the new macbook but also own an xps m1330.

First off, its hard to compare a brand new computer like the MacBook to the 1330 that has been out since Dec 2007. Having worked with both machines I like both, but use Mac for my music.

To comment directly to your comments:

1) Yes the MB is built nicer, but at the time the 1330 was made it was nicer than the plastic macbook...
2) The new macbook's trackpad is nicer, again, at the time the 1330 came out it was just as nice as that current macbook.
3)Have never had any Vista issues or issues upgrading.
4) Crapware? I must not have checked that option.
5)OSX is a great OS.

Again you aren't comparing oranges to oranges. you are comparing your experience with a brand-new 2008/09 model macbook to an 07' Dell.

To the original Poster:
Both computers are great, and the new Xps model you are looking for are great and have some excellent reviews (see PCWorld for example). Stack them up, price em out and buy.

Either way I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Enjoy!
